materials.
3 Explain the design procedure of the heating elements when the power and voltage of the oven 1,2
are known.
4 Describe with the help of simple sketches direct and indirect resistance heating methods 1,2
5 Discuss about some materials used for heating, what are the causes of failure of heating 1,2
elements?
6 Describe the construction and operation of an electrical direct arc furnace. 1,2
7 Describe with neat sketches and construction details, methods of working of Indirect arc 1,2
furnace.
8 Explain the methods of induction heating and describe core type furnace. 1,2
9 Describe the Ajax Wyatt (vertical core) type induction furnace and explain its working. 1,2
10 Describe the construction and working of an Indirect core type induction furnace 1,2
11 Explain the methods of induction heating and describe coreless type induction furnace. 1,2
12 What is dielectric heating? Explain the factors on which the dielectric loss in dielectric material 1,2
depends.
13 A 20kW, single phase, 230V, resistance Oven employs circular Nichrome wire for its heating 3
element. If the wire temperature is not to exceed 1200 0c and temperature of charge is to be
6000c. Calculate the diameter and length of wire required. Assume emissivity = 0.9, radiation
efficiency 0.6 and resistivity of the wire is 101.6X10 -8 Ωm.
14 A 15kW, 220V, single phase resistance Oven is to employ nickel-chrome strip for its heating 3
element. If the wire temperature is not exceed 1000 0c and the temperature of the charge is to be
6000c. Calculate the diameter and length of the strip. Assume emissivity = 0.9, radiation
efficiency 0.6 and resistivity of the wire is101.6X10 -8 Ωm..
15 A 30kW, 400V resistance oven is to employ nickel-chrome strip 0.254 mm thick for the three 3
phase star connected heating element. If the wire temperature is to be 1100 degree centigrade
and that of charge is to be 700 degree centigrade. Calculate a suitable width of the strip. Assume
emissivity = 0.9, radiation efficiency 0.5 and resistivity of the wire is 101.6X10 -8 Ωm.
16 A 40 kW, 3 phase, 400 V resistance oven is to employ Ni-Cr strip of 0.3 mm thickness. The 3
heating elements are star connected. If the wire temperature is to be 1127 0c and that of the
charge is to be 7270c, estimate suitable width and length of wire required. Assume emissivity =
0.9, radiation efficiency 60% and resistivity of the wire is101.6X10-8 Ωm
