School Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Draft and cut Pattern for
Athletic Shorts.

Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) is one nomenclature in the
implementation of the K to 12 Basic Education Program (BEP). It is composed of four
components, namely, Agri-Fishery Arts, Home Economics, Industrial Arts and

What is It

Drafting Basic/Block Pattern

Patterns are carefully drafted to give accurate results. They serve as
valuable guide in laying, cutting, and assembling the different parts during sewing.

Pattern drafting gives the TAILOR a blueprint of what a garment will look like. It
also serves as a guide for the tailor.

There are 2 kinds of Pattern that tailors commonly make:

1. Block Pattern: Serves as foundation on cutting the garment. It is made by
drawing blocks to create the whole pattern
2. Final Pattern- Summary of the block patterns. It serves as the pattern garment
cutting.

In drafting the block pattern, the following materials should be prepared.

1. Pattern paper (positioned on its lengthwise grain)
2. Pencil with eraser
3. Tape measure
4. Ruler
5. Hip guide
6. Scissors

To ensure quality output, dressmakers draft pattern before sewing.

Pattern Markings are universal symbols and lines designed to help the sewer put the
pattern pieces together quickly, easily, and successfully. Every marking is necessary
for a specific reason. Not every marking is on every pattern because some are specific
to a certain style or construction technique. Construction markings are very helpful
during the sewing process and transferring them to the fabric is a must.

DRAFT BLOCK PATTERN
Here are the steps to follow when drafting the Block Pattern:

1. Measure 9cm from the edge of

pattern paper to point A.

2. From point A, make a perpendicular

line.

3. A – B, ¼ waist measurement on the

tape measure.

4. B – C, Length of shorts, add 5 cm

downward for bottom hem allowance.

5.B – D, rise or seat measurement.

6.D –E, ½ Seat measurement on the tape

measure upward.

What’s New
LO 1.4 Drafting and Cutting the Final Pattern
Drafting the final pattern is indicated with the needed symbols that will guide the tailor or
dressmaker during the layout of the pattern on the fabric. The following are symbols used in
making the final pattern.

It is necessary to check the alterations needed in making the final pattern. To

ensure a well-fitted garment, block pattern should be checked first.
Take note of the following in drafted patterns.
• Waist of back pattern is higher and wider than the front pattern.
• Crotch of back pattern is deeper and wider than the front pattern.
• Length of back and front pants has the same measurements.
• Knee measurement has the same length
• Bottom of back pants is wider than the front pants

What is It

Making the Final Pattern.

Instructions: Follow the following steps in Drafting and Cutting the Final
Pattern.
1. Prepare the pattern paper, pencil, and drafting tools such as the L-square,
French curve, hip curve, and ruler.
2. Copy the basic pattern.
3. Make the necessary design of the pants specifically for the outer seam.
4. Provide the needed seam allowances:
a. Inseam= ¾ inch (0.9 cm)
b. Outseam= 1 inch (2.54 cm)
c. Waistline = ½ inch (2.54 cm)
d. Crotch = ¾ inch (1.9 cm)
e. Blas facing for the outer seam= ½ inch (1.2 cm)
f. Hemline = ½ inch (1.2 cm)
5. Cut the final pattern with the seam allowances.
6. Indicate the pattern symbols on each pattern piece.
7. Use suitable cutting tools.
8. Cut curve areas smoothly and slowly especially the
crotch, armholes, and pocket.
9. For double patterns, prepare a ready pattern for the
layout of the garment.

Notes
Practice on drafting and cutting the final pattern on manila paper or cartolina.
Proceed to the next activity if you have tried and finished cutting a final pattern.
