PERFORMING ARTS INSTITUTE

An Art Institute reflects the interest of society. It exhibits the area of interest of the creative minds. Around the world,
there are various Performing Art Institutes such as the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna; Royal College
of Music, London; National School of Drama, New Delhi; Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagadh; Nrityagram,
Bangalore, etc., which teach performing arts and also the likes of Kala Academy Goa and NCPA Mumbai which give a
platform to artistes.
Navi Mumbai is a well planned city. It hosts major commercial, residential, institutional and infrastructure facilities.
The development around Navi Mumbai is taking big leap in economic and social growth and is moving towards
becoming one of the many smart cities in India. Kharghar which is a node of Navi Mumbai has become an educational
hub with many renowned institutes. Here the proposal of ‘Performing Arts Institute’ is being considered by the
Government.
Site details:
A rectangular site which was reserved for academic purposes has been earmarked for this project. The site
dimensions are – 150 meters North-South x 100 meters East-West. It abuts a 12-meter-wide road on the East side.
Students should use only 70% of the plot area for the design of the institute, the balance 30% is to be left for the
development of residential accommodation for students, in the next phase.
Design considerations:
1. Permissible ground coverage: Maximum 50% of the considered 70% plot area.
2. Permissible F.S.I.: 1.0
3. Setbacks: 9.0 m from roadside and 6.0 m from the other three sides.
4. It is mandatory to design a barrier-free structure.
5. Unbuilt spaces play an important role in the design of this institute hence Landscape Design is a very crucial
aspect of the total design scheme.
General design brief:
Aim: To design a Performing Arts Institute that clearly reflects the theme of the creative space it is being
designed for.
