Criteria For Pipe Stress Analysis

The document provides equations and criteria for performing pipe stress analysis. It outlines how to calculate displacement stress range due to thermal expansion using an equation from ASME B31.3. It also provides the equation to calculate allowable displacement stress range (SA value) and defines the parameters in the equation. Tables with symbols, values, units and remarks are given for parameters like thermal expansion cycles, stress reduction factor, allowable stresses, pipe dimensions, and maximum allowable forces and stresses.

Criteria for Pipe Stress Analysis

Equations for Calculating Expansions Stress Range and Allowable Stress Value

Displacement Stress Range due to thermal expansion is calculated based on equation SE, per equation
17 from ASME B31.3 (clause 319.4.4)

The SE value shall not exceed SA value, where SA = Allowable Displacement Stress Range.

The SA value is given by the equation 1a from ASME B31.3 (clause 302.3.5)

SA = f (1.25 Sc + 0.25 Sh)

Where :

f = Stress range reduction factor

Sc = Basic Allowable Stress at minimum temperature

Sh = Basic Allowable Stress at maximum temperature

N = equivalent number of full displacement cycles during the expected service life of the piping system

cycles to be minimum 10 years. Assume there is 3
cycles of thermal expansion per day. So,
The total number cycle N = 3 * 365 * 10 =
approximately 10950 cycles for the entire
life of the equipment.

Stress Range Reduction f 0.9 Based on the chart of Fig. 302.3.5 of ASME
Factor B31.3
Basic Allowable Stress at Sc 20,000 Psi Basic Allowable Stress : A-106-gr.B, at 100oF
minimum temp.
Basic Allowable Stress at Sh 20,000 Psi Basic Allowable Stress : A-106-gr.B, at 200oF,
maximum temp. (Design temp = 175 degF)

Yield Strength Sy 35,000 psi Yield Strength of A-106-gr.B

Allowable Displacement SA 27,000 psi SA = 0.9 * (1.25 * 20,000 + 0.25 * 20,000)
Stress Range = 27,000 psi
Pipe Cross Section Area A 11,515 mm2 A = pi/4 * (Do2 – Di2)
Pipe 8 inch, sch 120,
Do = 219.1 mm (Outside Diameter)
Di = 182.58 mm (Inside Diameter)
A = pi/4 * (219.12 – 182.582 ) = 11515 mm2
Maximum Allowable FA 2142.9 kN T = 27,000 psi = 186.1 N/mm2
Displacement Force T = F/A  F = T * A
F = 186.1 * 11,515 = 2142900 N
Maximum Allowable Ss 17500 psi Ss = 0.5 Sy
Shear Stress = 0.5 * 35000 = 17500 psi
Maximum Allowable Fs 1381.8 kN Ss = 17500 psi = 120 N/mm2
Shear Force Fs = Ss * A
= 120 * 11515 = 1381800 N
Maximum Allowable St 60,000 psi St = 60000 psi = 413.7 N/mm2
Tensile Strength
Maximum Allowable Ft 4763.5 kN Ft = St * A
Tensile Force = 413.7 * 11515 = 4763500 N
