Week 10 Art Appreciation

Here are some key questions to consider mise-en-scene in a film: - What is the setting or location of each scene? How does this impact the story? - What props are used and how do they relate to the characters or plot? - How do the costumes and style of dress reflect the characters? Their social status, personality, etc. - How is lighting used to set the mood, draw attention to certain elements, or influence the audience's perception? - What is the relationship between characters based on their positioning or blocking within the frame? Paying close attention to these visual storytelling elements can provide insight into themes, symbolism, and the overall world of the film

Elements of a Film

According to Merriam-Webster
dictionary, a movie is a recording of
moving images that tells a story and
that people watch on a screen or
television

Janet Singer in 2019 wrote about ‘How watching moving can

benefit our mental health’. According to Singer, film
watching is a kind of activity where you, your friends, or
your family could enjoy. This is called Film Therapy. Below
show the different benefits of film watching:
▪ Watching movies encourages emotional release.
▪ Sad films can make us happier or appreciate more of everything
good in our lives.
▪ Watching movies can help us make sense of our own lives.
▪ Movies give us a break from whatever is currently bothering us.
▪ Movies bring us a sense of relief, even if they stress us out first.

Pre-test
Read the instruction:
1. Choose an English or Filipino movie. A movie that you
are interested about and has an impact on you.
Best loved Example: The Notebook

2. Provide a brief overview of the movie. Make sure to

Pre-activity

Characters are what make stories. It can be a person, animal, being,

creature, or thing in a story. So, without a character, there is no
story to tell.
The major characters are the most important characters in the story.
The first one is the Protagonist, the main character around which
the whole story revolves. The other one is the Antagonist, which can
be a character or group of characters that cause the conflict for the
protagonist.

Know the character!

Read the instructions:

1. Identify a character in the movie you have chosen in the Pre-test.
Example: Noah
2. Lift a direct quotation delivered by the character.
Example: “You can't live your life for other people. You've got to do
what's right for you, even if it hurts some people you love.”
3. Provide your impressions about the quote you have chosen. The
answers must be brief only (three (3) sentences).
Example: Noah is right in his statement. We cannot live our life

Content and Discussion

In this module, you will learn the different elements of a film and its definition. You will learn
about the narrator, cinematography, mise-en-scene, editing, and sound.

NARRATIVE
The narrative is an ancient art of storytelling. It includes the story, characters, and setting. The
success of the film or movie is based around the effectiveness of the narrative. These are the
questions you may ask yourself:

▪ Is there a narrator in the film? Who?

▪ Point of view means through whose eyes the story is being told.
▪ Through whose eyes does the story unfold?
▪ Is the story told in the first person “I” point of view?
▪ Is the story told through an off-screen narrator?

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Cinematography is defined as writing in movement. This is the way in which a shot is framed, lit,
toned, and colored in a story. It includes camera angles, camera movements, shot sizes, lighting,
and composition.

• A camera shot is based on the camera’s distance from the object.

• The four basic shots used in films are:
o a close-up – a very close shot where the camera lens focuses
on some detail or the actor’s face.
o medium shot – a shot where the camera lens picks up some
background or upper half of the actor.
o full shot – a shot where the camera lens has full view of the
actor.
o long shot – shot taken at a distance from an object.
• What camera shots can you identify in the film? How are they used?
CAMERA • A camera angle is how the camera is tilted while filming.
o straight-on angle – The camera is at the same height as the
object.
o high angle – The camera is filming from above the object.
o low angle – The camera is looking up at the object.
o oblique angle – The camera is tilted sideways.
• Does the way in which the camera is held say anything about the
character?
Course Material: Art Appreciation 7

• Lighting focuses the audience’s attention on

the main character or object in a film.
• It also sets the mood or atmosphere.
• While high-key lighting is bright and
illuminating, low-key lighting is darker with a
lot of shadows.
• What special lighting effects are used during

the most important scenes?
Filters are often used to soften and reduce
LIGHTING
harsh contrasts. They can also be used to
eliminate haze, ultraviolet light or glare from
water when shooting outside.
• Using color like red or orange can be used to
enhance the feeling of a sunset.
• Can you find any examples where a filter has
been used in the film?
• What effect did using a filter have on the
scene?

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene is
everything that appears
in a frame. Sets,
locations, actors, props,
costumes, light, and
shadow are all part of it.
It can be realistic or
abstract, purely
background or an
interpretive active

element.

Editing

Editing has been called “the key to cinema” as it is the only formal element that is unique to the
medium. Editing is the way in which a film editor together with the director cuts and assembles
the scenes. The way the scenes are joined together creates the rhythm of the motion picture.
Scenes can be long and drawn out or short and choppy.
• Can you see a pattern to how the scenes are cut?
• How would you describe the pace/tempo of the film?

Sound

This is arguably the most subtly influential aspect of film. The three components of sound in a film
is the dialogue, sound effects, and music. The music is the most evident and recognizable
component of a sound while dialogue and sound effects are very essential in a film.

SOUNDTRACK

▪ Soundtrack includes both

dialogue and music, as well as all
the other sounds in a film.
▪ enhances the atmosphere of the
film (what effect does the choice
of music have? Does it suit the
theme?)
▪ Are any particular sounds
accentuated?
