Number system

Introduction:

Mathematics relies heavily on numbers, and in this workbook, students will


delve into the world of four-digit numbers and learn how to perform various
operations with them.

The smallest four-digit number is 1000 – One Thousand

The biggest four-digit number is 9999 - Nine thousand nine hundred ninety-
nine.

According to their values, the digits are placed from right to left at one’s place,
ten’s place, hundred’s place and thousand’s place.
For example, let us take 2385:

We can write in the expanded form as:

2000 + 300 + 80 + 5
We know that:
2000 = Two thousand (2 thousands)
300 = Three hundred (3 hundreds)
80 = Eighty (8 tens)
5 = Five (5 ones)
When added together it is written as:
2385 = Two thousand three hundred and eighty-five.

Odd Numbers:

An odd number is a whole number that cannot be divided by 2 evenly,


meaning there will always be a remainder of 1 when you divide it by 2.

Here are some examples of odd numbers.

1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, and so on.


Even Numbers:

The numbers which are completely divisible by 2 are called even numbers.
They never leave a remainder. The remainder is always zero.
For example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc.

Natural numbers:
Natural numbers are a set of numbers that start with 1 and continue upward
infinitely.
Natural numbers are used for counting objects, and they do not include
negative numbers, fractions or decimals. So, natural numbers are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
and so on.
Natural numbers are represented as “N”
For example:
4 is a natural number.
-2 is not a natural number.
0.5 is not a natural number.
7/2 is not a natural number.

ASCENDING AND DESCENDING ORDER:

 The numbers are said to be in ascending order, if they are arranged from
the smallest to the largest.
Example: 1000  2000  3000  4000
 The numbers are said to be in descending order, if they are arranged
from the largest to the smallest.
Example: 4000  3000  2000  1000

The relation between heart and stars are given below:

How many hearts will be equal to the starts given below?

Explanation:
1 heart = 3 stars
2 hearts = 3 × 2 = 6 stars
3 hearts = 3 × 3 = 9 stars
In the question figure, 9 stars are given and we need to find out the equivalent
hearts.

What is the smallest four digit number that can be formed from the digits 7, 3,
0, 6 (without repeating the digits)?

Answer: Option a
Explanation:
The digits you have are: 7, 3, 0, and 6.
Now, arrange them is ascending order:
0 (smallest digit) 3 (next smallest) 6 (next smallest) 7 (largest digit)

Computation Operations

Introduction:

Students need to be aware of the four major operations in mathematics.


i. Addition
ii. Subtraction
iii. Multiplication
iv. Division

 Addition means increment which is denoted by the symbol:


 Subtraction means reduction which is denoted by the symbol:
 Multiplication means repeated addition of the same number which is

denoted by the symbol:


 Division means repeated subtraction of the same number which is

denoted by the symbol:

For example,

Addition:

Addition means two or more quantities are counted to obtain a single


quantity. The total of two or more quantities (addends) together is called
their sum.

Let us take two numbers (550 and 110)

550 + 110 = 660


Subtraction:

Subtraction means when you take away objects from a group and then
count how many are left. When we subtract a smaller number from a larger
number, the result obtained is called the difference.

Let us take two numbers (550 and 110)

550 – 110 = 440

Multiplication:

Multiplication means adding equal groups together. It is also called the


process of repeated addition.

Let us take two numbers (550 and 110)

550 × 110 = 60500

Division:

Division is the inverse of multiplication. Knowledge of division depends


upon the knowledge of multiplication.

Let us take two numbers (550 and 110)

550 ÷ 110 = 5

Rahul has 116 sweets out of which he keeps 17 sweets with himself and
distributed remaining between his friends. Find the number of sweets each
friend got.

Introduction:

When a thing is divided into equal parts, then each part is called a fraction of

A fraction is written in the form as Denominator .

Here, numerator represents equal parts being talked about and denominator
is the total number of equal parts.

Length

Introduction:
Length is the measurement of distance. With the help of length, a student can
determine how long or how short a given thing is. Everything around us has a
length, for example, the car, the pencil, etc.
The various tools which we have been using to measure length are measuring
tape, ruler, handspan, stick, etc. We compare the length of the object with the
measurement tool and thus determine the length of the object in terms of the
measuring tool.

Conversions:
1 kilometre = 1000 metre
1 metre = 100 centimetre
1 feet = 12 inches

If Hari borrowed 2 metres of rope every day. Find the total length of rope in
centimetres borrowed by Hari in a week.
