Week 4 Review Questions 2022

The document discusses various topics related to concrete materials including aggregates, mixing water, admixtures, sustainability, and water-cement ratio. It provides questions to test understanding of these topics and includes tables with test data to analyze the effect of water-cement ratio on compressive strength and whether non-potable water can be used for mixing concrete.

Aggregates

1. What effect will aggregate grading have on the concrete in the

plastic state?
2. List some of the harmful substances that may be found in concrete
aggregates.
3. What is meant by grading of the aggregate?
4. Name 3 types of rocks used for concrete aggregate.
5. List the more important properties for concrete aggregates.
6. Explain how the shape of aggregates is checked or tested.
7. Explain the difference between Manufactured Sand and Crusher
Dust.
8. What is the density range for normal weight concrete aggregate?
Mixing Water
1.What are the two functions of water in a concrete mix?

2.What should be done when using water from unknown sources?

3.Is bore water suitable for concrete?

4.List two contaminants that may be in water.

Mixing Water
5.Can seawater be used in concrete if reinforced?

6.Can recycled water be used for concrete and what

precautions should be taken?

7.What is the result of the uncontrolled addition of water?

Mixing Water
Four standard mortar cubes were made using non-potable water available at
the job site, and four others were made using potable water. The cubes were
tested for compressive strength after 7 days of curing and produced failure
stresses in MPa shown in the table below.
Also test was conducted on the cement paste made with the questionable
water and showed that the set time is ½ hour less than the set time of paste
made with potable water. Based on these results, would you accept that water
for mixing concrete according to Australian Standards? Explain why (see next
slide for Table 3 AS 1379 for property limits for concrete and water)
Mixing Water
Admixtures
1. Name six general use admixture types.

2. The three means of admixtures working are?

3. What are the benefits of water reducing admixtures?

4. What are some of the advantages of superplasticisers?

Admixtures
5. What is the usual entrapped air after compaction of normal
concrete?

6. At the same w/c, each 1% increase in air content reduces

strength by how much?

7. Name positive and negative benefits of retarders.

8. Describe the action of accelerators on concrete properties.

9. What is the designation of the Australian Standard for

admixtures?
Sustainability
1. What are the three planks of a “triple bottom line”?
2. What are the five “levers” available to the cement industry
to improve their sustainability credentials?
3. Name a sustainability rating tool
4. What are the main drivers and barriers for alternate binding
materials?
5. What is meant by “thermal mass”?
6. Describe how concrete can be made more “sustainable”
7. Describe Life Cycle Analysis
Water-Cement Ratio
1. The water-cement ratio is important because it influences all
the desirable qualities of concrete.
A. What is a typical water-cement ratio for normal strength
concrete?

B. What is the water-cement ratio needed for hydration only

when concrete is in the plastic state?

C. Why is the extra water necessary?

D. Briefly describe how ultra high strength concrete (> 100 MPa
compressive strength) can be made.
Water-Cement Ratio
2. Two batches of cement mortar with properties as shown in
Table below. If mortar cubes are made from these batches,
which batch do you expect to have larger compressive
strength? Why?

Water-Cement Ratio
3. Students in the materials class prepared three mortar mixes with water-
cement ratios 0.50, 0.55 and 0.60. Three 50-mm mortar cubes were
prepared for each mix. The cubes were cured for 7 days and then tested
for compressive strength. The test results are shown in the table below.

Determine the following:

a. The compressive strength of each cube.
b. The average compressive strength for each mix.
c. Plot the average compressive strength vs w/c ratios for all mixes.
d. Comment on the effect of increasing w/c ratio on the compressive
strength of the mortar cubes.
