g) If a plastic rod is rubbed with a woolen cloth, what will happen?
h) The diagram shows a 3.0 Ω resistor and a 6.0 Ω resistor connected in parallel.
i. Less than 3.0 Ω ii. 3.0 Ω iii. 4.5 Ω iv. More than 6.0 Ω
i) The diagram shows a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field. Which arrow shows the direction of the
force acting on the conductor?
j) The diagram shows a flat, rectangular coil placed between the poles of a magnet. There is a current in the
coil that makes it turn in the direction shown in the diagram.

Which change would make the coil turn in the opposite direction?
Q2. From the four circuits shown, which will have 'the brightest lit lamp or lamps'? Explain your answer. Note
that the bulbs and batteries are identical. [1+2=3]
Q3. A student traces the path of a ray of blue light as it enters and as it leaves a glass prism.
Fig. 1.1 shows the trace obtained by the student.

a) Copy the figure, draw and label, at the point B, the normal, the angle of incidence i and the angle of
refraction r. [3]
b) State, in terms of the properties of light waves, why the light refracts at B. [1]
c) The angle of incidence for the ray of blue light at B is 45°. The refractive index of the glass is 1.5.
Calculate the angle of refraction at B. Show all necessary steps in your calculations. [2]
Q4. a) An unknown material is rubbed with wool and the material becomes charged. Explain how you could use a
negative rod or a positive rod to determine the type of charge on the unknown material. [2]
b) What is an electric field? State two properties of electric field line. [1+2=3]
Q5. a) What is a solenoid? Write two ways by which you can make the magnetic field stronger in a solenoid.
[1+2=3]

Q1. Resistors of 2 ohms and 4 ohms are connected in parallel across a battery supplying 6 volts. Another resistor
of 5 ohms is connected in series with the battery.
b) Calculate the total resistance of the circuit. Show all necessary steps in your calculations. [1.5]
c) Calculate the current flowing through the 5ohm resistor. Show all necessary steps in your calculations.
[1.5]
b) What are the two factors that increase the force on an electric wire in a motor? [2]
c) This is a diagram of simple motor. Briefly explain the mechanism of an electric motor. [2]
Q3. The figure shows two rays of light from a point O on an object. These rays are incident on a plane mirror.
a) The object is 4 cm in front of the mirror, copy the diagram and continue the paths of the two rays after they
reach the mirror. Hence locate the image of the object O. Label the image I. [2]

b) Describe the nature of the image I formed in the mirror. [3]
Q4. The figure below shows two uncharged (neutral) plastic spheres. Each sphere is suspended by an insulating
thread.
The spheres can be given a charge. Three different experiments are carried out using the arrangements
shown in the following figure.
b) For each experiment, describe the force, if any, between the spheres. [3]
c) State how one of the plastic spheres can be given a positive charge. [1]
b) Calculate the following parameter using the information and the diagrams.
