PRE-PRELIMS EXAMINATION 2022-23


SUB: PHYSICS
CLASS – XII
TIME: 3 Hrs. MM: 70
This paper is divided into four sections-A, B, C and D. Answer all questions
Section A consists of one question having sub-parts of one mark each
Section B consists of seven questions of two marks each
Section C consists of nine questions of three marks each, and
Section D consists of three questions of five marks each
The intended marks for questions are given in brackets All working, including rough work,
should be done on the same sheet. Answers to sub parts of the same question must be given in one place only.
A simple scientific calculator without a programmable memory may be used for calculations.

SECTION – A (14 marks)


A. In questions (i) to (vii) below, choose the correct alternative (A), (B), (C) or (D) for each of the
questions given below: (1×7)
(i)Three point charges Q Q and q are kept at the vertices A, B and C respectively of an
equilateral triangle ABC having each side equal to a. Electrostatic potential energy of the
system is zero. This is possible if q is equal to.
(a) Q (b) Q/2 (c) -Q/2 (d) -Q/4
(ii)Consider 10 identical capacitors each of capacitance 5μF. The ratio of the minimum and the
maximum possible values of the capacitance that can be obtained from them, is. (a)
1:50 (b) 1:100. (c) 50:1 (d) 100:1
(iii) Two electric bulbs, whose resistances are in the ratio 1:2, are connected in parallel to a
constant voltage supply. The powers dissipated in them are in the ratio:
(a) 1:1 (b) 1:2. (c) 2:1 (d) 1:4
(iv) When a potential difference of 2V is applied between the two ends of a 1 m long uniform
metallic wire, current density in it is found to be 4×10-6Am-2 Resistivity of the material of the
wire is.(a) 5x10-7Ωm (b) 5x10-8Ωm (c) 5×106Ωm. d) 5×108Ωm
(v) Planar wave-fronts are produced by:
(a) a point source of light. (b) a line source of light.
(c) a source at infinity. (d) all types of sources of light
(vi) A solenoid having self-inductance of 8H is connected to a battery through a switch, When
the switch is closed, current through the solenoid increases from 0 to 5A in 0.2sec Magnitude of
the emf induced in the solenoid is.
(a) 2V (b) 20V. (c) 200V. (d) 2000V
(vii) A Telescope produces a magnification =5 . If the length of the tube is 36 cm then what will
be the focal length of the objective lens ?
(a) 30 cm (b) 6cm. (c) 25cm (d) 10 cm
B. Answer the following questions briefly : (1×7)
I. State the expression for the electrostatic potential energy between system of charges (q1
and q2) separated by distance (d) apart .
ii. With reference to free electron theory of conductors, define Drift velocity.
III. State any one use of Potentiometer.
iv. Define coherent sources of light.
v. Name the electromagnetic radiation used for viewing through Haze and fog.
vi. State De-Broglie hypothesis.
vii. What is primary rainbow?
SECTION – B (14 marks) (2×7)
Q.2 A thin horizontal, 12.0 cm diameter copper plate is charged to -3.3 nC. Assume that the
electrons are uniformly distributed on the surface What is the strength of the electric field 0.1
mm above the center of the top surface of the plate?
Q.3 Find the equivalent capacitance at AB in the given figure.

Q.4 Draw a graph for the variation of Electric Field ‘E’ with distance 'r' for a uniformly
distributed charged Spherical conductor of radius 'R'.
Q.5 A biconvex lens made of glass (refractive index 1.5) has two spherical surfaces having radii
10cm and 20cm. Calculate its focal length.
OR
A lens forms an inverted, half size image of an object placed 9 cm away. Calculate the focal
length.
Q.6 How Self inductance 'L1' and ‘L2’ is related to mutual inductance of 'M' of the two coils?
Q.7 A capacitor of capacitance 'C' is charged to potential 'V' and the battery is now
disconnected. A dielectric slab of dielectric constant 'K ' is inserted between the plates of a
capacitor what is the effect on -- (I) charge stored between the plates of capacitor.
(ii) Potential energy stored by the capacitor.
Q.8 What is meant by Diffraction of light? State any one difference between Diffraction and
Interference of light.
SECTION-C- (27marks) (3×9)
Q.9. Obtain an expression for the intensity of electric field at a point end on position i.e. on
axial position of an Electric dipole.
Q.10. For the shown system of Capacitors in figure , determine : (a) Potential difference
across each Capacitors. (b) Charge on each Capacitors and (c) Energy stored
in the equivalent capacitance of the system .

Q.11. Monochromatic light of wavelength 620nm is incident on a pair of slits which are
separated by 1.5mm. If the screen is kept 60cm away from the plane of the two slits calculate
(a) Fringe separation i.e fringe width, and (b) Distance of the 10th bright fringe from the centre
of the interference pattern.
Q.12 State Kirchhoff’s rules Use these rules to write the expressions of current I1,I2 ,I3 in the
circuit diagram shown .
Q.13. Give mathematical expression of Biot-Svart's Law and using the same obtain an
expression for magnetic flux density B at the centre of a current carrying circular coil.
Q.14. When two thin lenses are kept in contact, show that their effective Power or equivalent
Power 'P' is given by: P = P1 +P2, where the terms have their usual meaning.
Q.15 Using Huygen's wave theory, prove the law of reflection of light.
OR
Obtain Prism formula i.e. n×Sin(A/2) = Sin (A+D)/2 . Where A is angle of prism ,D is angle of
minimum deviation, n is refractive index of prism.
Q.16. Several electric bulbs designed to be used on a 220V electric supply line are rated to
10W. How many lamps can be connected in a parallel with each other across the two wires, or
220V line if the maximum allowable current is 5A.
Q.17 What are eddy currents .Write two applications of Eddy currents.
SECTION D – (15 marks) (5×3)
Q.18 An 80Ω resistor ,a 1.0 H inductor and a 40 μF capacitor are connected in series to an a.c.
supply of 220V such that circuit draws the maximum current . At this stage, calculate
(a) resonant frequency of the circuit.
(b) capacitive reactance of the circuit.
(c) impedance of the circuit.
(d) current flowing the circuit.
(e) phase difference between the capacitive and inductive voltages.
OR
A solenoid has a cross-sectional area of 7.0 x 10-4 m², consists of 430 turns per meter, and
carries a current of 0.52 Amp. A 13-turn coil is wrapped tightly around the circumference of the
solenoid. The ends of the cod are connected to a 1.60 resistor. Suddenly, a switch is opened,
and the current in the solenoid dies to zero in a time of 0.062 s. Find the average current
induced in the coil.
Q.19 Draw a neat labeled ray diagram of a compound microscope when the image is formed at
the least distance of distinct vision D. Derive the expression for its angular magnification
(magnifying power) in this setup.
Q.20. A biconvex lens of focal length 20 cm is dipped inside a fluid. What will be the new focal
length and nature of the lens in each case (a),(b) and(c) if the refractive index of the fluid will be
: (Take refractive index of lens = 1.5 )
(a) 1.2 (b) 1.8 (c) 1.5
