How Is Moral Character Developed?

When a person is said to have character, it
usually implies they have distinguishing moral
qualities, moral virtues, and moral reasoning
abilities. Less frequently used terms
HOW IS MORAL include morality, virtue, and ethics. A moral
person understands right and wrong and
CHARACTER willfully chooses what is right; a virtuous
person engages in good behavior
DEVELOPED? intentionally, predictably, and habitually; an
ethical person figures out what is right or
good when this is not obvious.
Morality is a system of beliefs about
what is right and good compared to what
is wrong or bad. Moral
development refers to changes in moral
beliefs as a person grows older and gains
WHAT IS MORAL maturity.
DEVELOPMENT? is the process through which children
develop proper attitudes and behaviors
toward other people in society, based on
social and cultural norms, rules, and laws.

CHARACTER analytic theories that view human nature as instinctual,
undeveloped, and in need of control or socialization
DEVELOPMENT o Maturational –cognitive and affective developmental
theories and social-learning theories that view human
nature as good.
4. Personality / Identity: includes theories that find
virtue rooted in personality and personal identity.
