CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

Nowadays, most people are using social media platforms,


and the internet usage increased during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Without a doubt, social media platforms like Tiktok are more
that just high-tech entertainment. Tiktok is an app that
allows users to record 15-second videos that continue until
the user selects the next video. It's also possible to combine
video clips, which take 60-second clasps into account. Music
tests, channels, quick cuts, stickers, and other add-ons can
all be mixed and matched to create recordings (Yang, 2021;
Kirschner, 2020).

Young people use the app to express themselves through


singing, dancing, comedy, and lip-syncing, and it allows them
to make videos and share them with other users. They grew
their following by utilizing photographs and writing to tell
stories about their personal lives and lifestyles,
interacting with their audiences both using online and
offline, and monetizing their for followers by embedding
native advertising into blog or social media posts. Various
teachers have adopted this application as a means of
disseminating information. Whether we're talking about
teachers, they all have the ability to disseminate material
online by generating short films.

Our phones can pose a distraction with a notification


even if we try to ignore the notification. Anyone can receive
notifications from Tiktok when someone they are following
either posts a new video or does a live stream on the app.

Each generation has its own characteristic that causes
a great affects on human life. Many changes are happening in
the field of education, even studying methods and strategies
that serve as major challenges facing students. Keeping
students interested and motivated in a lesson in one of the
challenges of education advocates.

The use of short videos is one of the methods that


can be linked to the technological change in the field of
education today. It becomes to maintain the student’s interest
in the lesson, develops the ability to independently and can
also be a basis for the future. In this regard, according to
the article by Escober(2020)that the TikTok application
becomes a way for young people to meet the simple reality of
life and the development of realistic content. This
application emerged in the year 2016, and contains a variety
of videos that continue to be enjoy by many.

As the number of young people enjoying TikTok application


continues to grow. It is becoming a big part of their lives.
Here they shoe their attitude more. This also becomes their
platform to adapt to environmental change. That’s why it can
influence different aspects of their lifestyle. One of them
is the field of cultivation and learning which is a big factor
of them as an individual.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main purpose of the study is to determine how Tiktok


application affects the studies of Pili National High School
student-tiktokerists.

Specifically, this study strives to answer the following


questions:

1. What is the profile of student-tiktokerists attending


classes in Pili National High School in terms of:

1. Age

2. Sex/gender

3. Grade level

4. Content

2. What are the reasons why student’s use Tiktok Application?

3.What are the affects of Tiktok Application on the studies


of student-tiktokerists in Pili National High School?

4. What can be proposed based from the result of the study?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The findings of this study may be beneficial to the


following:

Students- It will give them information about the effects of


tiktok application in their studies. This paper will guide
them to focus on

Teachers- can easily understand the needs of their students,
and their likes. And can create more bonding and help them to
be more effective in their studies.

Parents- This study will give the parents the information


about the effect of using the tiktok application to their
children studies.

Researchers- the collecting of information about a particular


subject

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study is mainly focusing on how tiktok application


affects the studies of Pili National High School, School year
2022-2023. Specifically, this will determine the profile of
student-tiktokerists; age, grade level, sex/gender, content,
reasons why student’s use tiktok, the effects of Tiktok
Application on their studies. This study will be limited only
to identified student-tiktokerists of Pili National High
School from grade 7 to grade 12. This study will exclude the
non-student tiktokerists of Pili National High School. Also,
student-tiktokerists from other schools in the municipality
of Magallanes is also not included.

DEFINITION OF TERM

As used in this study, this refers to the:

Tiktok Application- Is a social media platform for creating,


sharing, and discovering shorts videos. (Merriam Webster

Student- Tiktokerists- this is the student that using tiktok
application and posting on tiktok. (Merriam Webster
Dictionary)

Affects- a change that is a result or consequences of an


action or other cause. (Merriam Webster)

Studies- a detailed investigation and analysis of a subject


or situation. (Merriam Webster Dictionary)

Profile- a graphical or other representation of information


relating to particular characteristics of something, recorded
in quantified form. (Merriam Webster Dictionary)

Age- the length of time that a person have lived or a thing


has existed. (Merriam Webster Dictionary)

Sex/gender- the state of being male or female (typically used


with reference to social and cultural differences rather than
biological ones). (Merriam Webster Dictionary)

Content- the topic or matter treated in a written work.

Grade level- this is particular level of rank, quality,


proficiency, intensity, or value. (Merriam Webster

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the review of related literature


and Related Study which provide relevant information to the
researcher’s study.

RELATED STUDY

The associated literature and studies of the current


investigation are presented in this part. Tiktok is one of
the various social networking sites that are available
nowadays. Tiktok is a social media network that boasts 800
million active members globally since its introduction in
2016. TikTok’s influence on students has provided them with
a platform to entertain its viewers. According to Dilon’s
study (2021), TikTok, like other social media platforms, has
its share of influencers, and the 15-second video format
attracts what is known as meme machines. Influencers who make
money off of views, likes, comments, and shares are known as
meme machines. When someone who is influenced by the app is
pleased with how viewers react by commenting or liking the
published Tiktok, it is reported.

According to Yang (2020), when viewers “like'' a video


on Tiktok, they are expressing their enthusiasm for the
content, and if they leave a remark, they are expressing their
desire to connect and enhance one another’s videos. Meanwhile,
Iodice and Papapicco’s study (2021) demonstrates that they
are theorizing a distinct type of social impact, or “fun,”
that is characteristic of the social network and the period.
According to Jia (2017), as referenced by Liqian (2018),
TikTok’s contents come from all walks of life, and diverse
contents provide users with different experiences. For

example, funny content can entertain viewers, and users may
desire to shoot the same content to spread happiness to
others. According to Xu (2019), the “Tik Tok'' material is
quite dynamic, with a lot of online and offline activities
aimed at young people with imagination and curiosity. As a
result, the uploader of TikTok’s video receives fulfillment
from comments and replies.

While TikTok may be entertaining to the young, there are


also other positive and negative effects. According to Fund
(2021), TikTok can be the voice of many people’s opinions in
the real world, like how it was influential during the Trump
rally boycott campaign in Oklahoma. But Fund also observed
that negatively, TikTok is highly addictive, and many users,
especially teens, spend hours on it daily and it has become
a serious distraction to students. Simrin (2020) recognized
that TikTok is a source of moral entertainment for young
people, as well as a platform for publicity, learning new
things, and providing new opportunities for volunteering and
internship for students. On the other hand, she also
recognized that TikTok is designed to be addictive, saying
“It’s incredibly easy to fall down the TikTok hole and
suddenly reemerge hours later having lost an entire day.” For
Simrin (2020), TikTok has become a platform for bullying and
public shaming, thereby endangering the mental health of
viewers and users alike and since it doesn’t have restrictions
as to who can join the app, it poses a serious concern when
it comes to children being exposed to harmful situations.

According to Lee (2021), satisfaction with TikTok was


seen as a mediator between different motives to use TikTok
and to continue TikTok use. He also mentioned that research
cannot show any significant link between TikTok use and well-

being, whether positively or negatively. Lee (citing Wang et
al., 2020) also underlined the overall relevance of uses and
gratification theory to understand TikTok use and presented
needed variables in cognitive and affective domains as
relevant to personal/social integration and relief of
pressure. In addition, he also believed that (as supported by
the view of Shao, 2018) “young people use TikTok for
positioning themselves in their peer group and to understand
where he/she stands in the peer group. Thus, TikTok is also
relevant for identity formation of young persons and obtaining
feedback to oneself.”

But it cannot deny the fact that TikTok has inspired


and helped many people around the world, judging from internet
testimonies and research generated by scholars and social
media enthusiasts. While it is true and has been empirically
proven, that TikTok has negative and positive effects on
students, there is no doubt that it has reshaped the world of
social media as we know it today. But there is a need for
some sort of regulation on its use, especially among children,
and teenagers to maintain a healthy balance in their
psychological and social lives.

Although it’s possible to debate the positive and


negative effects TikTok has on teens, there’s no doubt it has
reshaped the world of social media as we know it. With this
in mind, it’s also incredibly important for users to regulate
their TikTok usage and maintain a healthy balance with the
real world.

RELATED LITERATURE

Since TikTok was released in 2016, more and more
people have found TikTok interesting and have tried to become
users. TikTok contains many features, such as video, chat,
learning, and working. People can relax and have fun in their
spare time with TikTok. Nevertheless, as TikTok has become
increasingly popular, more students are becoming the primary
users of TikTok. At the same time, the variety of short videos
available on TikTok can lead to inconsistent content quality
due to their low cost of production. As a student we need to
know the good and bad affects of watching TikTok.

Basedon Mekler, Audrey (2021), TikTok is an


app that allows someone to make dancing or lifestyle
videos, and it has become increasingly popular the past
couple of years, especially with the students. But does
that mean that this app poses a challenge to the student
paying attention in class and getting their school work
done? The relating to emerging adult hood and topics such
as anxiety, social media, relationships, stress, and more
topics that are similar. The results showed that the
more time participants spent on TikTok each day, the
more they became distracted on TikTok they were trying to
pay attention in class and complete school work. Similar
results occurred when looking at losing track on time on
TikTok and becoming distracted on TikTok when they were
trying to pay attention in class and complete
schoolwork. The more that someone found themselves going
on TikTok each day, the more they lost track of time on
TikTok. These findings show that TikTok can impact from
students’ abilities to be able to pay attention in class
and get their school work done, so students have the

possibility of doing worse in a class if they have and use
the app TikTok.

Technology has have a lot of benefits to our


modern world and students in particular profit from
these development. With the current challenges in our
world, technology has allowed students to keep engaged
with their studies, even if they can’t physically attend
class. Online resources also enable students who are
struggling to receive help with assignments and projects
they are stressed about. Technology is a great subject
to write about, with essays about technology being an
exciting topic for young students to investigates. Besides,
students cannot imagine their lives without social media
and TikTok is a great way to teach and learn about the
world around them. Students’ thoughts about technology in
education prove modern trends, especially TikTok to be
efficient tools for learning engagement and development.
(Para) distraction for students, as discussed above, TikTok
is a great tool for education, however, when used
during study time, it can be a huge distraction. Using
our phone while in school is usually discouraged, and
social media apps divert attention away from the lesson
at hand. It’s incredibly frustrating for teachers nowadays
to have to complete with phones, when they are trying
their best to engage the class (Blog Feature, 2020).

Studies showed that past time can affect a person’s use


of social media. This refers to step-ping further away from
duties and burdens and using a form of

amusement/entertainment. This factor consists of initial
factors: escape, relaxation, and entertainment. In addition,
although key enjoyments for all social media are an escape,
relaxation, and entertainment, these appear to be more
conspicuous in TikTok. Students and teens look at TikTok
mainly as a type of pastime, as a practical hobby in their
hectic schedules. Moreover, several studies show that this
factor relates to individuals killing time, having fun, having
a way to escape from daily stress and a busy schedule, and as
well as to relax. A previous report showed that escape,
relaxation, and entertainment are ICQ (I see you) motives to
use while presence, sociability, and affection are intrinsic
motives. ICQ is a cross-platform messenger as well as a Voice
over Internet Protocol (VoIP client). Students who devote
longer periods to ICQ also tend to spend more time on online
games for entertainment, especially if they do not need to
subscribe to am stated that the motive Internet Service
Provider (ISP) service at home. Another study behind the use
of TikTok is self-expression, social recognition, and fame-
seeking, where people (especially teenagers) would like to
use TikTok for those aims, especially since TikTok is known
for its high reach and this will allow them to shortcut their
way to fame. Sometimes, being famous and well recognized among
people is what makes a person happy, which makes these kinds
of people enjoy using TikTok, even more so when they start
reaching a high audience. According to the discussion above
the following hypothesis.

The consumption of social network sites (SNSs) has
become widespread and, therefore, the use of digital
technologies and adoption of digital technologies follow a
social trend. This means that if a medium becomes popular
among users, other users will start using it since everyone
else is. This is what happened with Facebook, when Facebook
started; people started downloading it and using it since, at
the time, their friends and family members used it. This
brings us to the fact that people are attracted to trends and
like to stay fashionable, especially young users (teens).
Generation and age play a role in the effect of this factor.
This is proven by previous studies which showed that young
users are more into adopting trends and are affected by trends
and new fashion as well. According to a study that explains
the habits of teenagers that are using social media and how
they are using it, results show how being trendy is very
important to them and how it could affect their satisfaction
because being trendy could lead to better belonging for
specific groups. Therefore, the following hypothesis is
developed.

Self-expression through social media is defined as


“the level of consumer uses social networking sites to show
their personalities, values, and characteristics to the
public. Moreover, it is the competence to communicate verbally
when interacting with others. It is a way in which people can
make their feelings and thoughts familiar by using self-
expressive information. Where people transfer their opinions,
ideas, and perceptions to others through nonverbal or verbal
manners, containing written and spoken words, gestures, and
images]. Self-expression motivates users to express their

thoughts through distinct platforms. In addition, self-
expression is relatively important as many if not all since
users prefer to express their own identity and individuality.
On the other hand, many studies declared that self-expression
increases brand engagement through feedback on products and
services which can generate lifetime value. Individuals use
social media platforms to satisfy their needs, which is aided
by self-expression. Furthermore, people’s satisfaction rises
when other users interact with their content where they stated
their feelings. This can be done through liking, sharing,
commenting, and reactive icon. Users can also feel satisfied
when they freely express themselves within an online community
to ask other colleagues to share an opinion, information,
experience, and interest on the same platform. Many studies
believe that there is a strong correlation between self-
expression and satisfaction. For instance, Anderson et al.
showed that with satisfaction and self-expression, the
popularity of social media can grow immensely. For the current
research, self-expression is defined as a way to express your
feelings, ideas, personality, and opinions using spoken and
unspoken words.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Figure 1 shows how the research is conceptualized with
all of its variable and the process in conducting the study.
It shows the step and the flow of the study. This research
focus on TikTok application, how it affects to the studies of
PNHS students. Furthermore, it was conducted to know the
effect of TikTok Application to the student-tiktokerists.
TikTok application is the input and the process were as
followed; first gathering information, the researcher also

need to know the important information about TikTok
application. Also collecting the important data about effect
of the TikTok on the students, collecting the data is needed
to know the important information about TikTok application,
how it affects to the studies of students.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents research methodology, the methods


of research that will be used in the study. The discussion
includes the research design, the sample, the instruments,
the ethical issues in the conduct of this study. It also
includes the data collection procedure, the data collection
procedure, the data analysis procedure.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study determine of how Tiktok Application affects


the studies of student-tiktokerists of Pili National High
School, S.Y 2022-2023. The researchers will use mixed-method
research to assures the specific problems in the study. The
quantitative method will utilize descriptive research design.
This will be used to describe the profile of student-
tiktokerists in Pili National High School.

Further, qualitative research using structured interview


will also be used. In here, structured interviews will be
conducted to determine the effects of tiktok application to
the studies of students-tiktokerists.

PARTICIPANTS

The participants of this study are the student-


titokerists of Pili National High School, school year 2022-
2023. This study will use purposive sampling method in
selecting the participants.

The participants will assure the survey questionnaires


to be given by the researchers. The survey questionnaires
will determine the profile of the participants. Moreover,

structured interview will be conducted to determine the
reasons why they use Tiktok Application and to determines the
effects of Tiktok Application to the students of Student-
Tiktokerists of Pili National High School.

THE RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers will utilize various instruments to


gathered necessary data. Researchers: Survey questionnaires
and structured interview question will be used to determine
how Tiktok Application affects the studies of Student-
Tiktokerists of Pili National High School.

DATA-PROCESSING PROCEDURE

To conduct this study, permission will be sight from the


School Principal of Pili National High School, the school
where the research will be conducted. Permission will also be
sight from the participants before administering the survey
questionnaires. Each participants will be given an individual
copy of the survey and the researchers will supervised them
in answering survey. Structured interview will also be
conducted after the researcher collected the questionnaire
given.

Responses of students on the interview being conducted


will be analyzed by the researchers.
