Is.8788.2002 Metric Taper Thread

This document provides standards for metric external taper screw threads and mating internal parallel screw threads. It outlines terminology, the basic thread form, nominal dimensions, tolerances, and limiting dimensions. Metric external taper threads have a taper of 1:16 and specific formulas are provided to calculate thread dimensions based on the pitch. Tolerances aim to ensure proper mating between external and internal threads while allowing for manufacturing variability. The standard aims to promote consistency and interchangeability of threaded fasteners.

FOREWORD
This Indian Standard ( Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized
by the Engineering Standards Sectional Committee, had been approved by the Basic and Production Engineering
Division Council.
This standard was first published in 1978 and subsequently revised in 1993. This revision has been taken up for
updating this standard incorporating the developments taken place in the field at international level.
In the preparation of this standard, assistance has been derived from DIN 158-1 : 1997 ‘Metric external screw
threads — Part 1: Nominal sizes, limits of size and verification’ issued by DIN. Some more information is given
in Annex A.
For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value,
observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2: 1960 ‘Rules
for rounding off numerical values ( revised)’. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value
should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

I)The tolerance for ‘a’ ( distance of reference plane ) and ‘b’ ( distance of gauge plane) can only be used together with t~ead
nominal dimensions as per Table 1.
z)The tolerances apply for externa] pitch diameter and minor diameter in every cross-section perpendicular to the thread
axis within the useful thread length /1. The tolerance zone thus lies parallel to the surface generating line of the nominal
taper.
J)The tolerances for Major pitch and minor diameters are only valid, if the threads are measured. For the distance. ‘a’ and
‘b’, then only nominal dimensions hold good.

Review of Indian Standards

Amendments are issued to standards as the need arises on the basis of comments. Standards are also reviewed
periodically; a standard along with amendments is reaffirmed when such review indicates that no changes are
needed; if the review indicates that changes are needed, it is taken up for revision. Users of Indian Standards
