Angkor Wat
In the middle of Cambodia, a few kilometres away from a city called Siem Reap, there’s
a famous temple called Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat means ‘temple city’, and it really is like
a small city. It’s not just one building: it’s more than 1,000 buildings. It’s the largest
religious monument in the world. A picture of Angkor Wat is on the Cambodian flag.

1 _____

Angkor Wat was the capital of a kingdom called the Khmer Empire. King Suryavarman II built it
in the 12th century. It took more than 30 years to build it.

2 _____

The temple city is famous because it’s enormous, but also because it’s very beautiful. Angkor Wat
is about 1.6 kilometres long and 1.4 kilometres wide. There’s a wall around it that is 3.6
kilometres long and about 5 metres high. There’s water (a moat) all around the temple city – this
moat is nearly 5 kilometres long and 200 metres wide. There are five towers. The largest tower is
in the middle. There are paintings and sculptures all over the walls. There’s a story that says that
the large tower in the middle is the imaginary mountain called Mount Meru and the moat is the
ocean.

3 _____

Millions of tourists visit Angkor Wat every year. They walk around, or go on a bike or in a tuk-
tuk (a small car with three wheels). Others can visit Angkor Wat from GoogleTM Maps. They can
imagine that they are walking around the temple city, or looking at the beautiful moat and the
amazing buildings.
