Quarter 1-4 – Module 1-4
Overview

This module provides you with the learning experiences that develop the basic theories, principles and
concepts underlying the different electrical lighting fixtures, accessories and light source. You will also learn
how fluorescent fixtures are installed and how simple repairs are done. Moreover, this module includes hands-
on experience in assembling and disassembling fluorescent lamps.
Safety precautions to observe when doing electrical work are also taken up to prevent accidents when
troubleshooting or doing repair work.

Instruction

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete each learning
outcome of the module. In each learning outcome are Information Sheets and activity sheets. Perform these
activities on your own and answer the self-check at the end of each learning outcome. You may use another
answer sheet at the end of each module to write your answers for each self-check and activity.

What Is It?
Lesson Information 3.1
Legends and Site Map
Legend
This is use as reference to easily read and understand the electrical layout. Using electrical symbols to
illustrate electrical components, devices and connections. And assists the Owners, Electrical Engineers and
Electricians to interpret electrical installations to be made, the equipment, fixtures, devices to be used and
electrical connections to be completed.

Electrical Symbols are pictograms, marks and signs used to signify different electrical components,
devices and connections. These symbols are used in drafting schematic diagrams and electrical plans. All
electrical symbols used in electrical plans and diagrams are collectively found in the Legends. These electrical
symbols are useful guide for the Electrician’s in performing electrical wiring installations.

Types of Electrical Symbols

1. Pictorial Symbols are used in panel diagrams that represents the abstract, graphic drawings or
actual picture of an electrical components, devices and connections.

PANEL DIAGRAM
2. Schematic Symbols are used in illustrating schematic diagrams. It do not show the exact position
of each electrical component, devices and connections.

SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM
3. Architectural Symbols are used in electrical layout. It shows the actual location of each electrical
component, devices and connections in the floor plan.
Site Map

When applying for an Electrical Permit it is required to inform the Office of the Building Official the
exact location of the electrical project so that it can be easily visited for inspection and for the Electric
Company to verify whether there is an existing electric utility pole where it can be accessible to connect. This
shows the following details:

A. Indicate the landmarks, popular structure, bordering areas and well known streets; and

B. Electrical power company service pole
