GROUP 3 - Percentiles and Quartiles - Comprimido

Percentiles and quartiles are statistical measures used to analyze and summarize data. Percentiles divide a data set into 100 equal parts, with each percentile indicating the percentage of values below that point. Quartiles divide a data set into four equal parts, with the first quartile (Q1) representing the median of the lower half of data, the second (Q2) being the overall median, and the third (Q3) representing the median of the upper half. These measures help identify outliers and compare distributions of different data sets.

WHAT IS PERCENTILES AND QUARTILES?

Percentiles and quartiles are statistical measures used to

analyze and summarize data. These measures are
especially useful for understanding the distribution of a set
of values, such as an exposure.
Percentiles divide a data set into 100 equal parts.
The P percentile indicates that P percent of the data are less
than or equal to that value. These summary measures are
useful for understanding the spread of data and getting a
more complete picture of the distribution of a particular
variable. You can use percentiles and quartiles to identify
outliers, compare different groups, or perform comparative
analysis based on certain criteria.
Percentiles
Characteristics

Represent the position of a specific value

in a data set.
Way to divide data into equal parts.
Help us understand the distribution of
data.
They are useful for comparing individuals
or group or determine a student's
performance compared to others.
Quartiles
Characteristics
Help identify the spread and central
tendency of data.
The first quartile (Q1) represents the median
of the lower half of the data.
The second quartile (Q2) is the median of
the entire data set.
while the third quartile (Q3) represents the
median of the upper half.

3. Standardized testing.
4. Risk assessment
Use of Quartiles

1. Describing the
distribution.
2. Identifying outliers.
3. Box plots.
4. Comparing datasets.

HOW CALCULATE QUARTILES
EXAMPLE
QUARTILES
A shoe store wanted to determine the popularity of different
shoe sizes for women’s tennis shoes. It planned to place its next
order using this information. In a five-day period, it sold nine
pairs of women’s tennis shoes in the following sizes:
