LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

COMPUTER SCIENCE 1

I. Introduction

From your previous activities, you were already introduced with some
computer basics. One of which is that regardless of its type, computers
consists of three parts: hardware, software and peopleware; and how they
differ from each other. But aside from the examples given to you, there are
still a lot more to learn about hardware and software. You must also realize
that in working with computers, safety should also be a priority. So, what
are you waiting for? Come on and let us explore!

II. Learning Competency

Demonstrate skills in illustrating the capabilities and limitations of

computer tools.

III. Objectives:

At the end of this learning activity sheet, you are expected to:

1. give examples of computer peripherals;

2. classify computer peripherals as input, output, or storage
device;
3. identify computer ports and their function;
4. determine what computer software and peripherals (hardware)
are needed in a task; and
5. explain the importance of proper handling of computers.
IV. Discussion

For computers to perform its basic functions, you need at least

computer case, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. But, do you know that
to maximize its use, you can still plug many different types of devices
into the extra ports on your computer. These devices are called
peripherals. These peripherals can be categorized into three groups;
input, output and storage device.

Input device are devices which allows the user to send data to the
computer.
1. Keyboard is a device consists of numbers, letters, symbols
and other keys. Users must tap these keys to enter the data
or command into the computer.
2. Mouse is a device which helps users to navigate and control
the cursor in the computer. With the use of a mouse you will
be able to open an application or send a command to the
computer.
3. Touch screen from k_to_12_entrep-based _pc_ hardware
_servicing _learning_module refers to a screen that is
sensitive to a touch of a finger or a stylus.
4. Scanners are devices which are capable of converting
letters, images or codes into a form of data that the computer
can process.
5. Microphones are devices which converts sounds into signals
for the computer to process.

Output devices, from k_to_12_entrep-based _pc_ hardware _servicing

_learning_module, refers to any piece of computer hardware that
displays results after the computer has processed the input data that
has been entered.

1. Monitors – processed data were shown in visual form

2. Projectors – just like in monitors, the output is also shown
in visual form but it may be in a wider screen.
3. Printers – gives a printed copy of the processed data
4. Speakers – the processed data is in audio form

Storage devices are those which are capable of storing processed

data for future use like flashdrives.

3
Just to recall, softwares are instructions that tell the hardware
what to do. Therefore, one will not function well without the other. Let
us look at this given example. Let us say you will be doing a letter, to
illustrate how the computer will function,
Input Device Process (Software) Output Device Storage
(Hardware) (Hardware) (Hardware)
Keyboard Word Processing Printer Flashdrive
Mouse Software
Example: MS
Word

As you can see without the software that will process the raw
data encoded using the input device, there will be no output. From
here, you can see how important is the role of each.

In a desktop computer, it is also important to understand the

different ports that are found at the back of its system unit.. Let’s
study the table below.

CARING FOR YOUR COMPUTER

Although computer can perform way better than human in terms of
speed and accuracy, it is still susceptible to damage that may affect its
performance. It is therefore a must to take proper care of computers to
maximize its efficiency and lifespan.
1. Update your software to fix bugs and glitches.
2. Install antivirus software and make regular virus scann.
3. Open only trusted sites.
4. Keep your password secured.
5. Keep backup files.
6. Clean the surface of your computer with compatible cleaning agents.
7. Don’t eat or drink while using your computer.
8. Do not overuse your computer.

5
9. Don’t over charge your battery.
10. Consult computer experts when needed.

V. Activities
General Directions: Write all your answers in your
activity notebook.

A. Peripherals
Directions: Give at least 5 computer peripherals that are most
likely found on the following areas in your community.
Grocery/Supermarket Computer Shops Malls

B. Directions: Classify the peripherals you identified from the previous

activity as input, output or storage device and answer the question
that follows.
Input Output Storage

Based on how you group these peripherals, how will you

describe a/an

VII. Reflection
After accomplishing the activities, I have learned that
Peripherals are __________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________.
These peripherals are classified into three, namely, input,
output and storage. Here are some examples for each.

9
And here are the word that will help me remember the
difference between the three.
