SPARK Your Interest

Moving towards teacher quality? Wanted! A Global Teacher of the 21" Century!

In 2013, a Global Status Index was determined by the Varkey GEMS Foundation
and revealed significant findings. There were 21 countries surveyed which
represented the major continents of the world. In most countries that participated, it
was found out that like the Philippines, teaching is the most sought profession. It was
comparable to being a social worker, librarian, nurse, and even doctor. The majority of
the parents asked, answered that they encourage their children to become teachers. To
them, teaching is one of the most respected and trusted professions.

However, with the change in the global landscape, 21st-century teachers must
have the competence to address the new learning environment, the new learning
contents, the processes of learning and how these are facilitated, and the new types of
learners.

Hence, we need a new type of teacher, a glocal 21* century Filipino teacher.

(Global Teacher Status Index p. 123 Teaching Profession)

TARGET Your Intended Learning

Outcome

At the end of this episode, I must be able to:

 describe the personal qualities and competencies of glocal classroom teachers of

the 21st century; and
 design a learner-centered classroom for 21st-century learners with safe learning
spaces, that allow creativity and use of ICT.

Episode 15 – Towards Teacher Quality: Developing a Glocal
Teacher of the 21st Century
FIELD STUDY
1. Which of the three responsibilities shows majority of the indicators being practiced?
A. Actual Teaching?
B. Management of Learning?
C. Administrative Work?
I believe that the "management of learning" is the most crucial, as it primarily centers on the
effectiveness of the lesson delivery within the classroom setting. It plays a pivotal role in ensuring that
students are engaged and learning optimally.
2. Which demonstrated behavior, do you find in the teacher that is worthy of emulation when you
become a teacher? Describe.

All of the mentioned qualities are worthy of emulation. However, if I were to choose just one,
I'd opt for the actual teaching aspect. It's particularly important because emulating effective
teaching behavior can be highly beneficial in my future endeavors, allowing me to follow a
strong model and continuously improve as needed.
3. Which of the major responsibilities does this teacher find difficult to comply with? What are the
reasons?

I can't definitively say whether it's challenging for her, but among the three indicators, there is
one that I haven't observed in her approach. Specifically, she records assessments at the end of
each quarter, rather than after every session.
4. From your perspective, would you consider this teacher as quality teacher? Why?

Absolutely, she serves as a prime example of a good-quality teacher. She aligns perfectly with
every description and exhibits all the characteristics of an excellent and effective educator.

Reflect

Now, that you have spent one school day to observe this teacher, it would be good for you to
reflect on all your observations by answering reflective questions below.
1. Are you inspired to become a teacher after your observation? If yes, why? If No, why not?
Yes, I've experienced a significant shift in my perspective as I've observed what truly takes
place within the classroom from the teacher's vantage point, as opposed to being a student.
These observations have led to changes in some of my views, and I now see myself in the
role of a future educator with a different lens.
2. When you become a teacher in the future, how else would you do better as a professional
teacher?
I am fully committed to developing the qualities of a high-quality teacher, and I will put in the effort
to acquire the necessary skills for my profession. Continuous learning from various sources will be

3. What are some of the concerns that you foresee in the future as a quality teacher? Do you think
you will be ready to address these? Give at least 2 concerns.
I think in the future, as technology upgrade day by day I think one of the concern will be the
integration of technology in the classroom setting and with trainings and self learning, I think I
would be easily address it. Next will be, the demand of learners in information, they are more eager
to know more and that’s a good thing, I will just do my best to give it to them

4. In what aspects of the teacher’s day, would you like to congratulate the teacher you observed?
Can you show your appreciation to this teacher by sending a Thank you card? (Include this in your

Through observations in various classrooms, I've noticed several deficiencies that require
immediate attention. Unfortunately, these issues often stem from a lack of funds, which is a
recurring challenge. In designing my new classroom, I have taken the initiative to address these
needs by making necessary improvements and adding furniture that will enhance my students'
learning experience.

In the 21st-century classroom, it's vital to take into account the students' needs and the
physical classroom environment. In my future career, I intend to create a classroom setting that
is conducive to effective learning. This means ensuring it is well-ventilated and well-lit,
allowing both students and teachers to absorb knowledge without distractions. Given the
increasing relevance of technology in the 21st century, I also plan to be proficient in teaching
using technology as a valuable educational tool.
