Facial Hair Policy
Facial Hair Policy
POLICY:
Hourly and Salaried employees and contractors working in operations, shipping, and
emergency, response may not have facial hair which could come into contact with the sealing
surface of any required respirator. This includes air supplied or filtering, half- or full-face
respirators.
Maintenance, Tank Car repair, Pels Shipping/Packers, Plant A & C Cell renewal or
construction personnel performing a respirator-required task shall shave if needed within 10
minutes. This means that if the worker has facial hair, then the worker would be required to
have shaving supplies in his work area.
This policy does not exempt anyone from being clean shaven for their annual fit test.
PROCEDURE:
• Employees may be required to use various types of respirators as the result of abnormal operations
and release of products. It is imperative (for employee protection) that the sealing portion of the
respirator fits against clean shaven skin (even a few days of stubble will prevent an effective seal).
• Chemical splash to the face. A beard (or heavy hair growth) does significantly increase the
potential for a serious chemical burn and complicates cleaning and treatment.
• Government Regulations (OSHA) mandate that users of respiratory equipment achieve an effective
seal (by test) and prohibit interference with the sealing surface of a respirator.
• It is the responsibility of the Human Resources Department to ensure that no employee is hired
who cannot meet the above safety requirement. Also, during the new employee safety
orientation, the Safety Department representative will further evaluate the compliance of new
employees with this policy.
• Supervisors shall be responsible for monitoring compliance by his/her employees. If the length or
shape of the hair is such that above requirements cannot be met, the employee will be required by
the supervisor to have the hair removed before they are allowed to work.
• Facial hair must meet the following guidelines:
• Mustaches cannot extend downward past a point even with the corner of the mouth
horizontally.
• Patches of hair beneath the lower lip cannot extend downward past the crease in the chin
below the bottom lip.
• Sideburns cannot extend downward past a point even with the bottom of the earlobe and
cannot be over 1” wide.
• Other facial hair, including 24-hour stubble, cannot interfere with the sealing surface of a
respirator.
