4.tutorial 4-Hydrograph

This document contains 12 questions related to principles and practices of irrigation. Specifically, it covers topics like: 1. Deriving a 3-hour unit hydrograph from given rainfall and discharge data. 2. Factors affecting flood hydrographs and the role of these factors. 3. Components of a hydrograph and methods of base flow separation. 4. Definitions and assumptions of unit hydrograph theory and deriving unit hydrographs from observed flood hydrographs. 5. Estimating peak discharges and deriving shorter duration unit hydrographs using the S-curve method. 6. WR-573: Principles & Practices of Irrigation
Tutorial No.4
Date: 04/10/2023

1. The runoff data at the stream gauging station for a flood are given below. The drainage area is 40
square km. The duration of rainfall is 3 hrs. Derive the 3 hr unit hydrograph. Assuming a constant
base flow of 50 m3/sec.

Date 1-3-1970 2-3-1970

Time (hr) 2 5 8 11 14 17 20 23 2 5 8 11 14 17 20 23
Discharge 50 47 75 120 225 290 270 145 110 90 80 70 60 55 51 50
(m3/sec)
2. List the factors affecting a flood hydrograph. Discuss the role of these factors.
3. Define and discuss the components of the hydrograph with a neat sketch.
4. Discuss the different methods of base flow separation Hydrograph.
5. Define unit hydrograph. List the assumptions involved in the unit hydrograph theory.
6. Discuss the elements of unit hydrograph with a neat sketch. Enlist the steps for derivation of a unit
hydrograph from an observed flood hydrograph.
7. Enlist and discuss the propositions of the unit Hydrograph.
8. How the alteration of unit Hydrograph duration is carried out? Discuss in detail.
9. The peak of a flood hydrograph due to a 6-h storm is 470 m3/sec. The mean depth of rainfall is 8.0
cm. Assume an average infiltration loss of 0.25 cm/h and a constant base flow of 15 m3 /sec and
estimate the peak discharge of 6–h unit hydrograph for this catchment.
10. The ordinate of a 12 hr unit hydrograph is given below. Derive the ordinate of 6 hr unit hydrograph
by S-curve method
Time Duration (hrs) 0 6 12 18 24 30 36 42 48 54 60 66 72

11. The ordinate of a 4-hr unit hydrograph are given below. Derive the ordinate of 2-hr unit hydrograph
by S-curve method
Time Duration (hrs) 0 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44

12. The 3 hr unit hydrograph for a basin is given below. There was a storm which commenced on July 15
at 16:00 hr and continued up to 22:00 hrs was followed by another storm on July 16 at 4:00 hrs which
lasted up to 7:00 hrs. It was noticed from the mass curves of the self-recording rain gauge that the
amount of rainfall on July 15 was 5.75 cm from 16:00 to 19:00 hrs and 3.75 cm from 19:00 to 22:00
hrs, and on July 16:00, 4.45 cm from 4:00 to 7:00 hrs. Assuming an average loss of 0.25 cm/hr and
0.15 cm/hr for the two storms, respectively, and a constant base flow of 10 cumec, determine the
stream flow hydrograph and state the time of occurrence of peak flood.
