Origin Name

• The name ANDAMAN is thought to derive from HANUMAN - the Hindu God of
monkey, supposedly used the islands as a stepping stone between India and Sri Lanka.

• Following Independence in 1947 the Andaman & Nicobar Islands were incorporated
into the Indian union.
Flora and fauna of Andaman and nicobar
Flora

The False Bird of Paradise (Heliconia Rosatrata) is a flowering herbaceous


plant that is native in Central America and surrounding islands. The nectar
produced by this plant draws birds. The flower is the flower of national
significance in Bolivia.
Common coconut palm

The common coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) is a broadleaf evergreen native to the
tropical islands of the Western Pacific. In the United States, common coconut
palms are found across Hawaii, Southern Florida, and Texas. The plant produces
coconuts.
Rangoon creeper

• The lush, evergreen vegetation of the Rangoon (Combretum indicum) is


a perfect option for building pergolas, fencelines, or trellises. When they
are in their blooms, these flowers release pleasant scents that add to the
natural beauty, but only once the sun sets. It's a popular destination for
pollinators and insects that seek nectar with their long tongues.
Radhanagar beach

Radhanagar Beach on the western coast, also known as Number 7 Beach, is one of
the most popular beaches on Swaraj and was named "Best Beach in Asia' by The
Times' in 2004. Radhanagar beach also bagged the prestigious blue flag certification
in 2020.[12] A Blue Flag beach is eco-tourism an model endeavouring to provide the
tourists or beachgoers clean and hygienic bathing water, facilities, safe and healthy
environment.

composition of vegetation vary from island to island. Most notably there you can see a
di erence between the tourist islands which su er more anthropocentric change and

which do not. There are also some islands more isolated or protected from the e ects of
weather in the Bay of Bengal. Tammugli, the largest island, is covered with thick mangrove

Tribes in Andaman and Nicobar

The Jarawas are an indigenous people of the Andaman Islands in India. They live in
parts of South Andaman and Middle Andaman Islands, and their present numbers
are estimated at between 250- 400 individuals. They have largely shunned interaction
with outsiders, and many particulars of their society, culture and traditions are poorly
understood. Since the 1990s, contacts between Jarawa groups and outsiders grew
increasingly frequent. the 2000s, some Jarawas had become regular visitors at
settlements, where they trade, interact with tourists, get medical aid, and even send
their children to school.
Onge

The Onge are an Andamanese ethnic group, indigenous to the Andaman Islands in
Southeast Asia at the Bay of Bengal, currently administered by India. They are
traditionally hunter-gatherers and fishers, but also practice plant cultivation. They are
designated as a Scheduled Tribe of India. Onge population numbers were substantially
reduced in the aftermath of colonisation and settlement, from 672 in 1901 to barely 100.
The population is still maintaining their cultural and biological identity, and it appears
that total numbers have increased from 100 to 117 in 2017.
Nicobarese

The Nicobarese

the Nicobar Islands, a chain of islands in the Bay of Bengal north of Sumatra, forming
part of the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. Only 12 of 19 islands
are inhabited. The largest and main island is Great Nicobar. The term Nicobarese refers
to the dominant tribes of the Nicobar Islands. On each island, the people have specific
names, but together they are the Nicobarese. They call themselves Holchu, which means

tourists who have a desire for adventure and a voyage on sea can
plan to take a passenger ship to Port Blair the capital city of
Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The ships leave from the Kolkata
harbour or port several times a week and reach Andaman in 2-3 days,
that means around 65-80 hours of travel by ship.
