LAKSHADWEEP
INTRODUCTION

Lakshadweep is an archipelago in the Arabian Sea,


part of India's union territories. It consists of 36
islands known for their coral reefs, clear blue
waters, and vibrant marine life. Lakshadweep is the
smallest union territory in India, covering an area of
around 32 square kilometers. The islands are
scattered across approximately 220 to 440 km off
the southwestern coast of India. Kavaratti serves as
the capital of Lakshadweep.
FOOD

Lakshadweep's cuisine is influenced by its


coastal location. Seafood plays a significant
role. Tuna and octopus are commonly used.
Local favourites include dishes like "Mas
Huni" (tuna with coconut), "Kukka Roti"
(coconut-flavored bread), and various
preparations of coconut milk with rice. The
cuisine reflects the islanders' reliance on the
sea and coconut trees.
DANCES

The islands of Lakshadweep showcase their own unique


dance forms. Kolkali , literally meaning "stick play," is
the signature dance of Lakshadweep, performed
exclusively by men. Armed with short wooden sticks,
dancers move in circles, striking sticks in patterns and
synchronized steps. Dhivehi Boduberu dance belongs
to the Minicoy Island, the southernmost island of
Lakshadweep. Dancers form circles and clap their
hands to the beat of a large barrel drum.
LANGUAGES

The primary languages spoken in


Lakshadweep are Malayalam and Jeseri, a
dialect of Malayalam. Mahl is used on Minicoy
Island. English is also understood to some
extent. Due to migration and government
jobs, Hindi is also spoken in the islands.
VEGETATION

Lakshadweep's signature plant is undoubtedly


the coconut palm. A variety of low-growing
shrubs and herbs also thrive here. Corals in
an array of shapes and colors are found here.
Seagrasses keep the water clear.
OCCUPATION

Lakshadweep has a tradition of boat-building.


Coconut cultivation offers people multiple
pathways to income. Fishing is a crucial
occupation for the people of Lakshadweep.
The locals also engage in traditional
handicrafts.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, another union


territory of India, are a group of islands in the Bay
of Bengal. The union territory consists of 571
islands, of which 37 are inhabited. The territory's
capital is the city of Port Blair. The total land area of
the islands is approximately
8,249 km2 (3,185 sq miles). The islands have
historical significance due to their connection with
the Cellular Jail, a former British colonial prison.
FOOD

The cuisine of the Andaman and Nicobar


Islands is diverse. Seafood is a staple
because of the coastal location. Coconut is
widely used. Dishes like fish curry with
coconut, coconut rice, and coconut-based
chutneys are common.
DANCES

The dances of Andaman and Nicobar Islands


hold deep cultural significance. Nicobarese
Dance is a highlight of the "Ossuary Feast" in
Car Nicobar. The Onge tribe performs
graceful and expressive dances. Dance is a
popular feature at community gatherings and
celebrations.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are


linguistically diverse. Bengali is spoken by a
significant population, especially in the
Andaman Islands. Hindi is widely understood.
Nicobarese is an indigenous language spoken
by the Nicobarese people.
VEGETATION

The Andaman Islands are dominated by dense


evergreen rainforests. These forests are
home to species of orchids, flowering trees,
and climbers. Along the coasts, mangrove
forests are found. They provide a vital buffer
against storms and erosion.
OCCUPATION

Farming plays a crucial role in the Andaman


Islands. The marine life around the islands
sustains many people, especially in Nicobar.
Tourism offers diverse opportunities for
islanders. People are also venturing in
handicrafts and food processing initiatives.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have several popular


places worth exploring:
• Cellular Jail: It has historical significance as a colonial-
era prison during India's struggle for independence.
• Radhanagar Beach: It's often considered one of Asia's
best beaches.
• Ross Island: It has historic ruins and is known for its
scenic beauty.
