The user can access all of Winflows potential and functions through the use of the keyboard and the commands on
the menu bar. The menu bar consists of 7 menus and 1 switch. Following is a brief description of each of the
menus and its related commands.
Feed Pre Dosing, Feed After Dosing, Intermediate Select the chemical dosing desired. Available options
Dosing 1, Intermediate Dosing 2, Pre-product dosing, are dependent upon the system architecture.
Product dosing
Argo Analyzer In practically all cases, choose “Concentrate
composition calculated by Winflows”.
Feed stripper, Premeate stripper 1, Premeate Select where to apply CO2 stripping. Available options
stripper 2, Premeate stripper 3 are dependent upon the system architecture.
Feed Bypass Select bypass of Feed water to be blended with the
permeate of the final stage
High Pressure Pump, Inter-pass Select the use of a pump between the pass 1 and pass 2
pump 1, Inter-pass pump 2 arrays.
EDI Select the EDI on the product line, Split Permeate1and
Split Permeate 2.
Work and Pressure Exchanger, Select the Work Exchanger / Pressure Exchanger/Pelton
Turbo Charger, Pelton Wheel Wheel on the first pass, where concentrate stream is
used to pressurize the part of the feed stream flowing
through them.
Cartridge Filters Select the option of choosing different Cartridge Filters.
This button executes the calculations as per the given inputs. Calculations can also be performed by using the
keyboard shortcut of “ALT+C”. The main RO calculation has to be performed first before calculating other features
like EDI, Pressure exchangers, Argo Analyzer etc.
Generate Report: This feature will generate the report for the projection,
with all the input and output data, in MS Excel format.
Report Options: The user can select the sections of the report that
needs to be generated.
This dialog box allows the user to enter project information. This information is used to identify reports generated
by Winflows. This dialog box can be opened by selecting “Project Info” under the Input menu.
The columns meq/L and ppm as CaCO3 list the charge concentrations of the respective species. The charge of several
of the species are pH dependent. Winflows considered this for sulfate, fluoride, hydrogen sulfide, boron, ammonia-
N, silica, and phosphate. For example, at pH 7, almost all the boron is present as non-charged boric acid while at pH
11, almost all boron is present as a borate anion. With 5 mg/L boron present in a stream, the listed meq/L of boron
might become 0.005 at pH 7, while it becomes 0.46 at pH 11.
Struvite
Struvite (Ammonium Magnesium Phosphate) is a phosphate mineral with formula: NH4MgPO4·6H2O. It is
sparingly soluble in neutral and alkaline conditions, but readily soluble in acid. In neutral to high pH water, Struvite
precipitates and forms hard scale in the pipes which is difficult to remove. Also, waters containing excessive
ammonia and phosphates (like waste water, where the anaerobic bacteria produces ammonium) lead to Struvite
scaling in the pipes. Winflows provides Struvite saturation data for all streams.
This dialog box enables the user to specify the flow sheet type and options to be used in the design. This dialog box
can be opened by selecting the Flow sheet command on the Input menu. Alternately, the various options can be
selected / unselected by clicking the respective icon in the flowsheet.
This dialog box allows the user to select the chemicals to be removed from any stream. The user can strip at a time
any or all three gases (if they exist in the stream) namely CO2, H2S and NH3 and specify their exit concentrations.
This dialog box can be opened by selecting the Stripping command on the Input menu. Note that the input field to
the left of “Activate” must be checked for the stripper to be activated.
This dialog box allows the user to select the flow rate location and quantity that will control the system design. The
user can also specify the RO recovery, recycle and bypass flow rates. This dialog box can be opened by selecting the
Flow Rates command on the Input menu.
On clicking this button, Winflows will check for the database update on SUEZ Water Technologies and Solutions
website. If a new version is available on the website then, Winflows will prompt the user as “A new version of
Winflows database is available. Do you want to download it?” and will show the location to replace the database
file.
If the user selects ‘yes’, then Winflows will automatically open the website to download the database.
This dialog box allows the user to calculate the average element age for a given replacement fraction and
replacement interval and vice versa.
This dialog box allows the user to configure a Turbo Changer to recover the energy from the concentrate stream and
to pressurize the feed water going in to RO.
The above information will enable the development of a first pass design within a couple of minutes using the Design
Assistant. After the first pass design is completed, one can look at the results and make design adjustments where
required or desired.
The above figure shows that the system can be configured by selecting the following buttons on the design toolbar
at the top of the window.
The Design Assistant, accessible from the main menu bar, steps the user through the steps involved in the design of
an RO system in a logical and orderly manner. Two approaches are available from the Design Assistant.
• Winflows Step Design - Manual entry of data
This dialog box allows the user to enter project information. This information is used to identify reports generated
by Winflows. This dialog box can be opened by selecting the Project Info command on the Input menu.
The second step in the design assistant (expert mode), is to specify the features that will control the design: the
characteristics or volume of the permeate stream, dosing chemical, stripping, feed Bypass, Recycles, EDI and ERD’s.
On this screen the user has the option of entering the concentration of selected elements or compounds or they can
select a typical feed stream from the drop-down list labeled Water Analysis. In this example a custom composition
is entered. To ensure ionic balance, the program will add either Sodium or Chloride.
The fourth and final step in the design assistant is to specify the number of stages, number of housings and type and
number of RO elements in each housing. The design assistant does all of this for the user upon entry to the window.
The design assistant configures the first array only. In this example the second pass array was made identical to the
first pass array. The user has the option of modifying the configuration of either array to optimize permeate quality
This window automatically opens after the program has calculated the results of the selected design. The system
explorer presents the user with a summary of the results and alerts the user to any errors or potential problems with
the design. To view the errors, the user can press the F11 key or select Errors from the View menu. The error
analysis will give helpful suggestions on how to resolve the problem.
Input Data Summary: User can view all the input data are entered
Results Summary: User can view the summary of the calculation results
Process Data Sheet: User can view all the calculated output on the process
side, like Flow, Pump, Stripper, Dosing and Argo Analyzer.
Streams Info: User can view all the streams data
Element Detail Data: User can view the Array data in detail.
EDI: User can view the EDI input and output data.
ERD: User can view the ERD’s
(Work Exchanger / Pressure Exchanger, Turbo charger
and Pelton Wheel) output data.
Capex / Opex: User can view the capital and operational costs in the
Project
This screen displays the Warning and Error messages that had occurred during a project execution in Winflows.
This figure shows a projection including all the features existing in Winflows with a display panel at the bottom of
the screen.
This dialog box allows the user to select different units for the given parameters.
This dialog box allows the users to mix different split streams along with the product stream and is shown in the
report.
