This dialog box allows the user to specify the properties of the feed stream. This dialog box can be opened by
selecting the “Feed” command on the flow sheet or in the Input menu.

The columns meq/L and ppm as CaCO3 list the charge concentrations of the respective species. The charge of several
of the species are pH dependent. Winflows considered this for sulfate, fluoride, hydrogen sulfide, boron, ammonia-
N, silica, and phosphate. For example, at pH 7, almost all the boron is present as non-charged boric acid while at pH
11, almost all boron is present as a borate anion. With 5 mg/L boron present in a stream, the listed meq/L of boron
might become 0.005 at pH 7, while it becomes 0.46 at pH 11.

Struvite
Struvite (Ammonium Magnesium Phosphate) is a phosphate mineral with formula: NH4MgPO4·6H2O. It is
sparingly soluble in neutral and alkaline conditions, but readily soluble in acid. In neutral to high pH water, Struvite
precipitates and forms hard scale in the pipes which is difficult to remove. Also, waters containing excessive
ammonia and phosphates (like waste water, where the anaerobic bacteria produces ammonium) lead to Struvite
scaling in the pipes. Winflows provides Struvite saturation data for all streams.

type of element, age, some Flows, fouling and pressure parameters for the arrays used in the design. This dialog box
can be opened by selecting the Array command on the Input menu.
The concentrates from the elements housings in a stage are combined and then separated to feed the different
housings in the downstream stage. This combination followed by separation causes a pressure loss, which here is
called Interstage Pressure Loss. How big it is depends on the design of the RO unit and flow rates. In most cases, the
user does not know how big it is. It is in most cases acceptable to ignore it or insert for example 5 psi (34 kPa).
Recycle Permeate from the Last Stage to Feed Pump option is applicable only to single pass configuration.
RO Machine Model functionality is given to select the particular model and get the corresponding RO system
configuration automatically.
Temperature Difference input box is applicable only for 2nd Pass and 3rd Pass configuration.
Element fact sheets (as pdf files) can be opened for the selected element by clicking on “Element Info”.

On clicking this button, Winflows will check for the database update on SUEZ Water Technologies and Solutions
website. If a new version is available on the website then, Winflows will prompt the user as “A new version of
Winflows database is available. Do you want to download it?” and will show the location to replace the database
file.
If the user selects ‘yes’, then Winflows will automatically open the website to download the database.

Winflows 4.01 Help Document Page 19

This dialog box allows the user to calculate the average element age for a given replacement fraction and
replacement interval and vice versa.

Winflows 4.01 Help Document Page 20

This dialog box allows the user to invoke the Argo Analyzer feature to select the suitable antiscalant to add to the
feed at a given composition. This feature also calculates the effect of recovery on saturation of various salts.
Aluminum is not added to Winflows’ Feed water composition, but if it is present, it should be added to the Argo
Analyzer window, so it is included in the scaling calculations.
In practically all applications, “Concentrate composition calculated by Winflows”, should be chosen, because it is
more accurate than that calculated by Argo Analyzer.

Winflows 4.01 Help Document Page 21

This dialog box allows the user to select EDI (Electro deionization) feature either as a standalone option or on the
final product stream. For standalone applications feed composition should be manually fed in the Feed water
analysis window. When integrated with the flowsheet, the water composition of the final product stream is
automatically copied to the feed of EDI. This option also works on the split permeate stream.

The above information will enable the development of a first pass design within a couple of minutes using the Design
Assistant. After the first pass design is completed, one can look at the results and make design adjustments where
required or desired.
The above figure shows that the system can be configured by selecting the following buttons on the design toolbar
at the top of the window.

The Design Assistant, accessible from the main menu bar, steps the user through the steps involved in the design of
an RO system in a logical and orderly manner. Two approaches are available from the Design Assistant.
• Winflows Step Design - Manual entry of data

Winflows 4.01 Help Document Page 34

• Auto Design - Winflows fills in default data. Defaults can be over-ridden by the user. Auto design will only
function for single stage designs.
The Winflows Step Design and Auto Design functions will carry the user through each of the steps necessary to
complete a design. Next moves you to the next step, previous or back goes to the prior step. Exit quits the Design
Assistant but any changes made in previous dialogs are saved.
Project Information (Optional): Enter any project information you want to save here.
Feed Analysis or Specifying The Feed (Required): However, pressing Next with no data present will allow the Design
Assistant to set the feed water analysis to 100 ppm NaCl.
Flow sheet Configuration (Optional): The default is single stage or the current configuration set by the user.
Chemical Dosing (Optional): The default is no chemical treatment.
Chemical Stripping (Optional): The default is no chemical stripping.
Flow rates or Specifying Flow Rates (Required): No defaults are initially set, however, data set from the flow sheet
will appear in this dialog as defaults.
Pump (Required): You must specify an inlet pressure in the pump to calculate the efficiency and Power consumed.
Array Specification (Required): You must specify an array layout and at least 1 element/housing and 1 housing per
stage. The Auto Design function will calculate a default array for single stage systems.
Pressing the finish button on the Array Specification Dialog activates the calculation algorithm and presents the user
with the results.

This dialog box allows the user to enter project information. This information is used to identify reports generated
by Winflows. This dialog box can be opened by selecting the Project Info command on the Input menu.

The second step in the design assistant (expert mode), is to specify the features that will control the design: the
characteristics or volume of the permeate stream, dosing chemical, stripping, feed Bypass, Recycles, EDI and ERD’s.

Winflows 4.01 Help Document Page 35

Winflows 4.01 Help Document Page 36
The third step in the design assistant, expert mode is to provide information to describe the chemical composition
of the Feed Stream.

On this screen the user has the option of entering the concentration of selected elements or compounds or they can
select a typical feed stream from the drop-down list labeled Water Analysis. In this example a custom composition
is entered. To ensure ionic balance, the program will add either Sodium or Chloride.

Winflows 4.01 Help Document Page 37

On this screen the user can enter the RO recovery, Flow rate, Dosing and pH. Note that the Recovery of a pass is all
the permeates from the pass divided with the incoming feed water to the pass from upstream passes and raw feed
water to the RO system.

The fourth and final step in the design assistant is to specify the number of stages, number of housings and type and
number of RO elements in each housing. The design assistant does all of this for the user upon entry to the window.
The design assistant configures the first array only. In this example the second pass array was made identical to the
first pass array. The user has the option of modifying the configuration of either array to optimize permeate quality

Winflows 4.01 Help Document Page 38

and to minimize system cost. When the user presses Finish, Winflows does the calculations and the results
compiled for review.

This window automatically opens after the program has calculated the results of the selected design. The system
explorer presents the user with a summary of the results and alerts the user to any errors or potential problems with
the design. To view the errors, the user can press the F11 key or select Errors from the View menu. The error
analysis will give helpful suggestions on how to resolve the problem.

Winflows 4.01 Help Document Page 39

This window is opened by selecting Generate reports on the Reports menu. In the Report Options section the user
