Growing up with Miss Milly, there had been times in young Wilby's life when
he had the desire to leave home, never to return. Well, that Thursday evening
preceding the examination, Wilby had an overwhelming desire to wander off into
the night. It would be so nice, so very nice to be a firefly, he thought, as he
watched a fleet of fireflies illuminate the dark area in front of his home. They
moved to and fro like tiny ships, crisscrossing a silent, motionless sea. He
remembered a long time ago, the phrase ‘Eleven Plus Examination’ was
meaningless to him. He must have been in Standard 1 when he used to catch the
fireflies and place them in a jar.
Then one night Tall-boy told him it was cruel to put them in a prison and that
there was a monster firefly who would burn a hole in his right hand if he
continued to catch the poor, harmless creatures. He had stopped at once. Wilby
smiled and giggled at the recollection.
Miss Milly heard him. “Wilby, are you alright? Your head's not feeling funny?
Oh Lord, child, it's only a few hours before the exam. Go and lie down. Yes. Look
over your lessons first, though.”
“But Ma, Miss says tonight we must relax and tomorrow...”
“Relax, child? You heard wrong! How could teacher say that?”
The boy sighed deeply.
“Answer me that,” continued Miss Milly.
“Milly, | have something for Wilby,” Lenny shouted from the gate, “so open
the door quick!”
Reluctantly, Miss Milly let Lenny into the kitchen. “You had to come here now
to confuse the child?” she asked harshly.
“Not confuse, just to help the boy relax.”
“Relax! That's all I'm hearing; even teacher told him so!”
“Easy, Milly. Just think, tomorrow like now, we'll be laughing. Wilby boy, |

Where does oil come from?
il is formed from decayed plants and animals that have been buried
underground for millions of years. When the plants and animals died many years
ago, they sank to the bottom of the sea where they mixed with mud and sand and
turned into fossils. Very slowly, over thousands of years, the fossils changed into
oil which collected in pools in the layers of rock.
Alot of the world's oil is found deep under the rock layer at the bottom of the
ocean. Some oil is found deep under the rock on land. This land would have once

10 Oil in Belize
For almost 50 years, several oil companies had tried and failed to find oil in
Belize. Finally, in 2006, oil was discovered in Spanish Lookout in the Cayo
District by a company called Belize Natural Energy (BNE).
Oil that comes straight from the ground is called crude oil and is used to
15 make products such as gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel (fuel for planes). The
crude oil being pumped up in Spanish Lookout is of such high quality that local
farmers are able to put it straight into the tanks of their tractors and drive away.
Oil is produced but not refined in Belize. Once it has been pumped out of the
ground, it is taken by road to Big Creek from where it is transported by sea to oil
20 refineries in Panama. Although oil refining is highly polluting, BNE insists that oil
production is not and that protection of the environment is a high priority for the
company.
However, there are people who fear that the discovery of oil in Belize may
have negative effects. They say that further exploration and production may harm
25 Belize's fragile ecology and that the money earned from oil may not be used to
benefit the Belizean people.
The debate continues, but one thing remains certain. We must all do what we
can to save energy and to conserve fossil fuels because they will not last forever.
