Senior High School- 21st Century Literature Teaching from the

Philippines to the World

Student’s Name: Grade/Section:

Teacher: Date Submitted:

I. LEARNING SKILLS
A. Most Essential Learning Competency:
Do self and/or peer assessment of the creative adaptation of a literary text, based on
rationalized criteria prior to the presentation
B. Objective:
Assess a creative adaptation of a literary text, based on rationalized criteria prior to the
presentation

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Peer assessment, or self-assessment, is a process whereby students or their peers evaluate

assignments or tests based on scoring rubrics. The practice is employed to note strengths and
weaknesses and to improve students’ understanding of course materials as well as improve their
metacognitive skills. A major reason for using self and peer assessment is for skill development, in
improving learning and in helping students to improve their performance on assessed work.
A rubric is a performance-based assessment tool. Rubrics are used to gather data about their
students' progress on a particular assignment or skill. Simple rubrics allow students to understand
what is required in an assignment, how it will be graded, and how progress will be monitored for
mastery and proficiency.
Here are some samples of Assessment Tools prior to performance.

▪ Carousel Brainstorm - Chart papers containing statements or issues for student consideration are
posted around the classroom. Groups of students brainstorm at one station and then rotate to the next
position where they add additional comments. When the carousel “stops” the original team prepares a
summary and then presents the large group’s findings
▪ Concept Maps - Ask students to create a "map" of ideas connected with a topic. They should consider
how the topics link to each other and use lines or "linking" words to join the concepts together and
describe the relationship.
▪ Four Corners Inquiry – Students are given an opportunity to formulate their own views and opinions.
Students are asked to consider the topic and determine whether they strongly agree (SA), agree (A),
disagree (D), or strongly disagree (SD) with a statement. They are then asked to move to the
appropriate corner of the classroom identified with one of the options.
▪ KWL Charts - K-what does the student know? W-what does the student need and want to know? L-
what did the students learn? This is an effective pre-assessment tool and summative evaluation tool.

RO_English_Grade 12 21st Century Teaching from the Philippines to the World_Q1_LP 8

▪ Think - Ink - Pair - Share - A way to get students to reveal what they know or believe about a topic
is to begin by having them commit their thoughts to writing. To assess what the group knows, have
students discuss their ideas in pairs, and then to share them with the large group.
▪ Turn & Talk - During a lesson, there may be opportunities to have the students do a turn & talk
activity for a few minutes. This allows students to talk about the information presented or shared and
to clarify thoughts or questions.

III. ACTIVITIES

A. PRACTICE TASKS
Practice Task 1. Harry Potter is one common example of a literary adaptation. Have you read the
Harry Potter Novel or have you watched the movie? If I ask you to rate this movie, how will you rate
it? How about if you will be asked to give an assessment or expectation of a certain adaptation prior to
the viewing or reading? How will you give your assessment? If you have not watched the movie, you
may read the summary of Harry Potter in the attached sheet of this LP.
Directions: Ask somebody in your home to join you in filling out the KWL chart before watching the
movie entitled Harry Potter. Use a separate Sheet of paper for your answer.

How did you find the activity? How does the table help you in setting the mood for you to be
interested in the movie?

To verify your thoughts of the movie, watch the movie entitled Harry Potter and check if your
thoughts are correct. Then, ask any of your peers/ family members to watch with you and rate using
the rubric that follows. Compare the result. Write a brief explanation of your rating. Write this in a
separate answer sheet.

The Best Journey of My Life

Anonymous

There is nothing better than the emotions and feelings one can receive from setting out on an
adventure. Journeys help us to forget about our everyday issues. That is why I want to tell you about
the best journey of my life.
It started at home as I began to pack items for a journey. I was excited because my parents and
I were going to Thailand, the most interesting place to me. I could not imagine what it would be like.
The first experience we had when we got out of the plane to enter Thailand was the tropical,
wet, hot air that permeated the environment. We arrived at our hotel on the south of Phuket Island.
Beauty seemed to be all around us. From the one side of the road there was the lush greenery of the
tropical forest, from the other there were turquoise waves of the Andaman Sea.

We decided to spend our first days on a cozy seacoast and take a rest from a tiresome trip. The
weather was wonderful. The sun was shining and the water was so warm, placid and limpid that we
could see our shadows in it. I had the impression nothing else existed in this world besides us, nor the
cares of everyday life nor urban fuss. We were enjoying every minute of our rest, slowly sipping
coconut milk through a tube straight out of a coconut. The days were changing from one to another
with new, bright, unforgettable emotions and impressions.
We wanted to spend one day away on motorbikes, studying the island. Our trip took a whole
day and we managed to bike the half of the island riding along the coast. The views we saw on our
journey showed us another side of local life. People were in a hurry going to work or attending other
business. The traffic in Thailand is extremely busy and noisy. A lot of people ride motorbikes, which
is a distinguishing feature of Thailand.
All the way long, we made breaks to taste the delicacies of the local cuisine in snack bars. I
enjoyed Thai food immensely with its extraordinary combination of sweet, sour, and spicy flavors.
Sometimes the dishes were so spicy, that tears streamed from my eyes.
We also decided to diversify a bit, and go to less touristic parts of the island. Our island was
covered by steep hills. The picturesque view of the tropical jungles and endless spaces of the sea with
many adjoining islands, and the beauty and splendor of local nature was opened to us. I was overfilled
with the sense of infinite freedom and peace of mind. There was the impression that nothing is
necessary in life except this place and moment.
It was a truly sad realization when we knew we had to travel back home. The whirlwind of emotions
and feelings swept over my mind: this is completely another world, with its climate, people, food,
traditions, and customs that charm and dip you in the extraordinary atmosphere of calmness and
composure. I remember it now with freshness and understand that it was the best journey of my life.

Summary of the Harry
Potter Movies
YADIRAE

G4TV

It’s been a 10 years since Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone made its way to
theaters. Harry Potter has been through a lot with his two best friends Ron Weasley
and Hermione Granger. There has been adventure, heartbreak, and even death, all
the elements that have shaped Harry into the man he needs to be to face the dark
and evil wizard Lord Volemort. Now with the final installment of the Harry Potter
movie franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, coming to theaters on
July 15, maybe some people need a little refresher of the events that have lead
Harry Potter to this epic and final battle. We all know the classic battle of book vs
movie, of which one is better and how the books have more details, but although I’ve
read the books religiously since they came out, I will stick to the movie franchise. I
will give a brief summary of the events that transpire in each of the movies so that
those that will go see the last installment won’t be lost and can fully enjoy the
incredible epicness that is the Harry Potter series. WARNING: It contains
SPOILERS!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s

Stone
Harry discovers he is a wizard on the eve of his 11 th birthday when a giant named
Hagrid comes to take him to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry
learns that when he was a baby, the dark and evil wizard Lord Voldemort came into
his home and murdered his parents, but was destroyed when trying to kill Harry
because the spell he used backfired. Once at Hogwarts, Harry goes on to be sorted
into Gryffindor house, becomes best friends with Ron Weasley, the red-headed

youngest boy in a house of seven children, and Hermione Granger, the bushy-haired
know-it-all, learns a bit of magic, joins the Gryffindor Quidditch team, gets to know
his professors, and surprisingly enough makes a few enemies (aka Draco Malfoy
and his gang). Harry and his friends suspect that Professor Snape wants to steal the
Sorcerer’s Stone, which has the power to turn the drinker immortal. They try to stop
him, to later find out that in fact it was Professor Quirrell and that he was trying to
resurrect Lord Voldemort, which was disturbingly incognito under his turban in the
back of his head. Harry defeats Quirrell with his “love” touch, granted by his mother’s
protection when she sacrificed herself to save him.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of

Secrets
Harry is back at Hogwarts, even though Dobby the house elf tried to stop him from
going because he knew he was in danger. Once there, students, including
Hermione, are turning up petrified by a mysterious monster. Everyone believes that
Harry is the culprit and is accused of being the Heir of Slytherin and opening the
Chamber of Secrets. Salazar Slytherin, one of the founding fathers of Hogwarts,
shortly before being sacked from the school, created a secret chamber in which he
stored a horrendous monster and he vowed that one day his heir would return to
open the chamber and release the creature inside. When Ron’s sister Ginny is taken
into the Chamber, Harry and Ron go with the “help” of Professor Lockhart (who turns
out to be a fraud) to rescue her. Harry finds an unconscious Ginny in the Chamber
with a boy in his teens. This boy turns out to be the memory preserved in a diary of
Tom Marvolo Riddle, that when unscrambled spell out: I AM LORD VOLDEMORT.
Harry defeats the basilisk, the creepy giant snake monster in the chamber, with the
help of Dumbledore’s pet phoenix Fawkes and stabs the diary with one of the fangs
of the snake destroying Tom and saving Ginny.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner
Azkaban
Harry leaves his uncle’s house in rage because he blew up Aunt Marge, but he is not
expelled from school because the Ministry of Magic is scared for his safety since
Sirius Black, a fugitive of the wizardly prison Azkaban, is out to get him. The school
is being watched by Dementors, life sucking cloaked grim reaper like creatures that
survey Azkaban. Harry draws in these creatures and decides to learn how to defend
himself from them with the help of the newest teacher, Professor Lupin. Later, Harry
learns that Sirius Black is actually his godfather (GASP!) and that the crime that got
him imprisoned was that he gave Voldemort information about the whereabouts of
the Potters, killed about a dozen muggles and a wizard by the name of Peter
Pettigrew. It turns out that Harry’s father, James, had a group of mischievous friends
that called themselves the Marauders and they had created the Marauder’s Map, a
magical map that had the layout of the entire castle and told the whereabouts of
everyone in the castle. The Marauders, that were made up of James Potter, Harry’s
father, Remus Lupin, the new professor, Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather, and Peter
Pettigrew, the man that Sirius supposedly killed, were Animagus, they could turn
themselves into animals, except for Lupin which was already a werewolf. Later on,
Ron is taken captive by Sirius in his animagus form (a dog, woof!) not to harm him,
but his rat Scabbers, who was actually Pettigrew in his animagus form. Ultimately,
Harry lets Sirius go when it is explained that it was in fact Pettigrew who committed
the crimes and was under Voldemort’s orders. In the end, Sirius’ name is not cleared
since Pettigrew escapes.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Harry is back at Hogwarts, where this year the Triwizard Tournament will be taking
place. The Triwizard Tournament is a magical competition with two other schools,
Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, which consist of 3 very dangerous challenges. The

RO_English_Grade 12 21st Century Teaching from the Philippines to the World_Q1_LP 8

Goblet of Fire selects a champion for each of the schools, Viktor Krum for
Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour for Beauxbatons, Cedric Diggory for Hogwarts, and to
everybody’s surprise, Harry Potter. No one knows how Harry was selected but he
has to participate since he is bound by a magical contract. The challenges are
difficult and Harry receives help from Hagrid, Dobby and even the new teacher,
Professor Moody. At the last challenge when head-to-head with Cedric, they make a
pact that they will win together, but when they touch the Triwizard Cup to seal the
victory, they are transported to a graveyard. There, they find Peter Pettigrew, who
kills Cedric (the spare) and resurrects Lord Voldemort with Harry’s blood. Voldemort
summons his followers, the Death Eaters, which include Lucius Malfoy, the father of
Harry’s enemy Draco. Voldemort challenges Harry to a duel, where he is able to
escape because his wand and Vodemort’s are twins and can’t fight against each
other. He returns to school where he finds out that Moody is in fact a Death Eater
that used magic to take the real Moody’s appearance and was making sure that
Harry won the Tournament to get him in Voldemort’s hands.

Harry Potter and the Order of the

Phoenix
Harry is accused of using magic in front of a muggle and this time he is taken to trial
where gratefully he is found not guilty, because of Dumbledore’s interference. He
returns to Hogwarts, where he spends the school year wallowing after witnessing the
death of Cedric Diggory, and because no one in the Order of the Phoenix seems to
be paying him any attention, aww. The Order, which is a secret group of wizards that
are fighting against Voldemort, includes Dumbledore, Sirius Black, the Weasley
family and various others, including Snape, which Harry’ loathes. Meanwhile in
school, Harry forms a secret organization of his own named Dumbledore’s Army
( how original -.-), where he acts as a teacher to other students that think that they
are not learning much under the new teacher Professor Umbridge. In the Army, he

RO_English_Grade 12 21st Century Teaching from the Philippines to the World_Q1_LP 8

even starts dating one of his students, Cho Chang (it doesn’t last long) and secures
loyalty from some of his friends, including Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood.
When Harry finds out that Lord Voldemort has captured his godfather Sirius, he
embarks on a mission for his rescue to the Department of Mysteries, located in the
Ministry of Magic, with his loyal friends Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Neville and Luna. It
turns out to be a trap that cost Sirius’ life when the Order had to go rescue them.
Dumbledore consoles a distraught Harry and informs him of a prophecy that
concerns him that was made before his birth. The prophecy says that a boy will be
born on July 31 (which is Harry’s and Neville’s birthday) and that that boy will be
marked (which Harry was) and that none can live while the other survives (you
deduce your own theory on this one!).

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood

Prince
The muggle world is suffering the consequences of the battle in the wizarding world.
Dumbledore arrives at the Dursley’s home to ask Harry to help him recruit Horace
Slughorn to become the new Potions teacher and, to everyone’s surprise, Snape
would be taking the cursed Defense Against the Darks Arts position. Once at
Hogwarts, Harry and the gang face their biggest challenge yet, hormones. Ron likes
Hermione, Hermione likes Ron, Ron dates Lavender Brown, Hermione gets mad,
starts dating Cormac MaClaggen, Ron’s rival, Harry runs interference between
Hermione and Ron while harvesting a crush on Ron’s sister Ginny, Ginny dates
Dean Thomas, and Harry wants to crush his head. While all of this is going on, Harry
is having meetings with Dumbledore where he is showing him memories about
Voldemort so that Harry can get to know his enemy, since he will ultimately have to
face him. They also confirm Dumbledore’s conclusion that Voldemort created seven
Horcruxes, or pieces of his soul that he inserted into different objects that have great
meaning to him. They have already destroyed 2 Horcruxes, the diary in Harry’s
second year, and Slytherin’s ring, that Dumbledore found and destroyed. Almost at
the end of the school year, Dumbledore asks Harry to accompany him on a

RO_English_Grade 12 21st Century Teaching from the Philippines to the World_Q1_LP 8

dangerous journey into a cave to find a Horcrux. They beat the obstacles that
Voldemort placed to protect it and leave the cave with the Horcrux, which was
Slytherin’s locket, and a weakened Dumbledore. When they get back, they realize
that Hogwarts has been infiltrated by Death Eaters that were let in the school by
Draco Malfoy, who Harry suspected all along of being a Death Eater even though
everyone thought it unlikely. Malfoy was instructed by Voldemort of killing
Dumbledore, but when it came to it, he couldn’t commit the act. Instead,
Dumbledore’s trusted professor, Snape, murders him and escapes with the Death
Eaters, including Malfoy. Harry later realizes that the locket that they found in the
cave was not really a Horcrux, but that someone had gotten to it first and had taken
the real Slytherin’s locket and left a fake with a note signed R.A.B.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Part 1
Harry is taken away for once last time from the home he spent his childhood to the
Weasley household, by a selected group of the Order of the Phoenix that disguise
themselves as Harry duplicates to confuse the Death Eaters just in case there is an
attack. Surprise, surprise there is an attack and there are indeed casualties, which
include Harry’s pet owl Hedwig, the real Mad-Eye Moody and George’s ear. Once at
the Weasley’s home, the new Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour gives the gang
some artifacts left for them by Dumbledore in his will. Hermione receives The Tales
of Beedle the Bard, which is a book of children stories, Ron receives Dumbledore’s
Deluminator, which puts out any light, and Harry receives the Golden Snitch that he
caught in his mouth on his first game of Quidditch. Later the Weasleys are having
the wedding of their oldest child Bill, who came out of nowhere, and Fleur Delacour,
Harry’s competition in the Triwizard Tournament. During the wedding, there is a

commotion and Harry, Ron and Hermione are forced to leave everyone behind to
embark on their own mission, to find and destroy the remaining of Voldemort’s
Horcruxes. The gang spends many days camping and trying to figure out what to do
next and during these days they figure out Vodemort’s plan to find the Deathly
Hallows. These are three magical artifacts that if together make the bearer immortal.
They consist of the Elder Wand, which is the most powerful wand in the world, the
Resurrection Stone, which resurrects in ghost form people who have died, and the
Invisibility Cloak, which we suspect is the Invisibility Cloak that Harry was given on
his first year at Hogwarts. After many lost and lonely days, fights and Ron’s
departure, eventually the gang together is able to find and destroy the locket, the
missing Horcrux, before being captured and taken to the Death Eater’s headquarters
in Malfoy Manor. Eventually, there is a struggle in which Harry, Ron and Hermione,
aided by Dobby the house-elf, escape with the other captives, Dean Thomas, Luna
Lovegood, Griphook the goblin, and Ollivander the wand maker. While fleeing,
Dobby is hurt and after getting the party to safety, he dies. The movie ends with
Voldemort opening Dumbledore’s grave and taking his wand, who he believes is the
Elder Wand.
