Methodology-Dynamic Load Test
Methodology-Dynamic Load Test
5. PRINCIPLE: This is a system of assessing the load carrying capacity of piles by analysing
records of force and velocity under drop weight impacts.
6. MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT:
1. Pile Driving Analyzer
2. Strain Gauges
3. Accelerometer
4. Radio Transmitter
5. Drill Machine & Tool Kit
6. Mechanical Crain
7. Hammer of 1.0 - 2.0% of Pile Test Load
8. Plywood Sheet of Pile Diameter and having 25mm Thickness
9. Steel Helmet having thickness of minimum 20mm
7. SAFETY PRECAUTION: PPEs such as hand gloves, goggles and helmet should be worn and
safety cage provide around the pile during testing.
9. PROCEDURE
➢ The testing may be conducted at least 28 days after the pile is installed.
➢ High strain dynamic pile testing is conducted by attaching strain transducers and
accelerometers alternately at 90º to the sides of the pile at a depth of at least 1.5 times of
pile diameter from top of pile OR just above cut-off level.
➢ A pair of transducers is fixed on to opposite sides of the pile so as to detect bending in the
pile if any during testing. These transducers are then connected through the main cable OR
by blue-tooth signal to PDA.
➢ Once all transducers and accelerometer are connected to PDA, perform self-calibration
automatically through PDA.
➢ Arrange the hammer on top of Pile and in line with centre of Pile so that when hammer
falls, it falls at centre of Pile. The fall height generally varies from 0.5m to 3m. but it more
depends on mobilization/displacement of pile due to impact.
➢ Allow the hammer to fall freely on top of pile. For each hammer blow, the strain
transducers measure strains whereas accelerations are measured by accelerometers
connected on either side of the pile. These signals are then converted to digital form by the
equipment and then converted to force and velocity respectively by integration.
➢ For each hammer blow, the test system displays immediate field results in the form of the
mobilized capacity of the pile, pile top compression, integrity, stresses etc.
➢ Testing is continued by increasing the hammer height by approximately 0.5m increment
till the time either the pile set or the pile capacity reaches the required or limiting values.
The limiting value for the pile capacity would be test load while for settlement it would be
3-4mm per blow. In other words, a test can be terminated if pile achieves required test load
or if pile settles more than 3-4mm per blow.
➢ A typical blow is selected for CAPWAP Analysis. The program is an analytical method
that combines measured field data with pile wave equation to predict the pile’s static
bearing capacity and soil resistance distribution. Based on the measured velocity data, the
program computes force required to induce the imposed velocity. Both measured and
computed forces are plotted as a function of time and the iterative analysis is continued till
there is good agreement between both the curves. If the agreement is not satisfactory, the
soil resistances at the pile point and along the pile are adjusted until a good match of
maximum 5.0 is obtained. This gives better estimates of the actual static pile capacity
measured during field testing and also the friction and end bearing components.
