Hardness Test Datasheet

This document contains data sheets for hardness tests, including Brinell, Rockwell, and Vickers tests on aluminum and steel samples. Tables are provided to record the test results using given equations to calculate hardness values. Students are instructed to complete the tables, include them in a report, and discuss the results and draw conclusions. The Vickers test data includes calculating the error compared to the known true hardness value of 274.5 for steel.

Hardness Test
(Data Sheet)

This data sheet contains all the information needed to complete your
report. First, you have to complete the following tables using the
equations given and any software you want (like MS-Excel), then include
the complete tables in the data analysis section of your report with sample
of calculations.

Finally, discuss the results of your data and with simple words write your
conclusions.

In the next three pages, you will find the data for Brinell, Rockwall, and Vickers
tests separately.

1
Part one: Brinell test

Complete the table using the equations given below.

Aluminum Steel

P(kgf) = 1500 D= 10 mm t=30sec P(kgf) = 2970 D= 10 mm t=15sec

σ
d1(mm) d2(mm) d HBN ultimate d1(mm) d2(mm) d HBN σ ultimate
3.9 3.8 4.8 4.75
3.9 3.95 4.9 4.8
4 3.9 4.9 4.8
3.8 3.95 4.85 4.9
Average Average

The Brinell hardness number:

2p
HBN =

d 1 +d 2
d=
2

Where:
P : The load in Kgf.
D: The indenter diameter is 10 mm in our experiment.
d : The diameter of the indentation in mm.
The ultimate strength (Mpa):

σ Ultimate = 3.45× HBN

2
Part two: Rockwell test

Complete the table below.

Material Aluminum High speed steel Spring steel

Scale HRB HRC HRC
Reading #1 27 52 34
Reading #2 26.5 47.90 34
Reading #3 26 46.5 34.5
Reading #4 27.5 47.5 34.4

Part Three: Vickers test

1- Complete the table using the equations given below.

Aluminum / HV10 Steel / HV 30

Test .no d1(mm) d2(mm) d(mm) HV d1(mm) d2(mm) d(mm) HV
1 0.4998 0.5022 0.6079 0.6291

4 0.5043 0.4906 0.6024 0.6011

The equations:

1.8544 × P
HV = d
2

d 1 +d 2
d=
2

Where:
P : The load in Kgf (10 for Aluminum & 30 for Steel).
d : The diameter of the Rhombus is mm.

2- Knowing that the true value of the HV30 for steel is 274.5, find the error
of our test.
