CONSTRUCTION VEHICLE INSPECTOR


Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993

Construction Regulation 23
23 (1) A contractor shall ensure that all construction vehicles and mobile plants-
are of an acceptable design and construction.
(a) are maintained in a good working order.
(b) are used in accordance with their design and the intention for which they were design, having due
regard to safety and health.
(c) are operated by works who-
(i) have received appropriate training and been competent certified and been authorized to
operate such machinery; and
(ii) are physically fit to operate such construction vehicles and mobile plant by being in
possession of a medical certificate of fitness.
Duties:
1. Ensure compliance with Construction Regulation 23.
2. Ensure all construction vehicles and mobile plant are inspected daily prior to use.
3. Make sure the vehicles are maintained in a good working order.
4. Ensure that all vehicles go for their regular services as per manufactures service book.
5. Check for damage, broken headlines, leaks, and faulty blinkers.
6. Ensure construction vehicles and mobile plants which are found to be unsafe are withdrawn from use
until the required repairs are affected.
7. Ensure record is kept of all inspections and the register is made available as required.
8. Ensure you conduct daily pre-start checks on your vehicle.
9. Report deviations to your supervisor immediately upon identifying the problem.
10. Keep the vehicle clean.
