1. - INTRODUCTION

CPC 123 is a numerical control and it is able to control a press brake equipped with 1, 2 or 3 axes or a
shear equipped with 1 axis.

There are several confirgurations:

- as regards to the press brake :

. programmer Y axis
. programmer X axis
. programmer Y – X axes
. programmer X – R axes
. programmer Y – C – R axes

- as regards to the shear :

. programmer X axis
. programmer X axis

The axes motorization is in a.c. with the possibility to control the motors by means of the electro-
mechanic contactors (standard model) or by means of the inverters; however the axes movement is
completely controlled by the computer that is able to avoid the wrong movements made by the
operator which can damage the mechanic parts of the machine.
This possibility is given controlling the axes position in the real time.

The dialogue between the operator and the machine is realized by means of an alphanumeric display
and it allows the computer to drive the operator in all his operations advising him in case of error as
well as of all events that could have stopped the execution of a piece.

A double diagnostics is realized by means of the alphanumeric display and some leds placed on the
electronic cards allow a rapid diagnosis of any possible malfunction of the numerical control and of all
the electro-mechanic and electronic parts interfaced to it.

The simple functionning, the key referred to a single function, the alphanumeric display, the dialogue
between the operator and the machine are the features that make CPC 123 the perfect instrument for
bending, making more quick and accurate the production.

This manual, that has been created expressly for the operator (it will existe also a technical manual for
maintenance) explains in theory and through real examples the numerical control functioning, the
programming and the automatic execution of the pieces.

In order to obtain from the machine the maximum capacity it is absolutely necessary to know the
numerical control in all its aspects and consequently it is necessary to study this manual.

4
2.- THE KEYBOARD AND THE SCREEN

CPC 123 is equipped with a keyboard divided in two parts; totally it is composed by 24 keys.

Under the display we can found the function block; at the left of the display there is the numerical
block.

In the lower part of the numerical control there are the selectors and the push-button necessary to the
ignition, to the turning off and to the other functions which are on the machine.

On the drawing we have the front of the CPC 123 with the keys position; afterwards we will analize
the function of each key.

<0>...<9> Numerical keys

<.> Comma, division between whole and decimal numbers

<C> In writing : it deletes the last inserted data;

it deletes a sequence of a program
it deletes a whole program

< SET > It allows the access to the 4 functioning ways of CPC 123

< MEM > It memorizes and inserted data

< END > It allows to leave the area where we are working and/or the current functioning

<-> In manual position : it moves the selected axis in the negative direction.
In visualization : it allows the checking of the bendings before the current one

< START > In automatic position : it starts the execution of a cycle

< STOP > In automatic position : it stops the execution of a cycle

< > In writing : it deletes the last inserted character

< FUN > It has not been inserted in this model of CPC 123

In CPC 123 there is also an alphanumeric display at liquid crystals, back-lighted, that is able to
visualize 40 characters on two lines. The brightness and the inclination of the display have been
adjusted before by the manufacturer for a corrent view of the data.

3.- THE IGNITION AND THE TURNING OFF

The ignition of the numerical control is executed by means of a key switch placed on the computer
panel after having turned on the main motor of the machine.
The numerical control will carry out a check of the memories and of the inside components; if all it is
in order, the following writing will appear for a few seconds on the screen :

PROGRAMMATORE PRESSA PRESS BRAKE PROGRAMMER

3 ASSI ( OMAG ) V0 3 AXES ( OMAG ) V0

Then the numerical control will set automatically in the manual position.
In case the computer finds any anomaly, it will begin to give out a sound. In this case it is necessary to
turning off the numerical control and to ignite it after a few seconds.
If the anomaly will remain, please call the assistence service of OMAG.
Before turning off the numerical control, please make sure that all the axes are still then set on the 0
position the key switch placed on the computer panel.
At last switch off the main motor of the machine.

4.- THE AXES

CPC 123 is able to control from 1 to 3 axes with severall combination.

The axes have a name (the same you read on the screen) : axis Y, axis X, axis R.
The axis Y is the bending depth: it controls the blade penetration in the die slot; the zero point of the
axis Y is the table where is supported the die; the datum point (REF) is the ram surface indicated in the
drawing No. 1.
The value of the Y axis on the screen is the distance between the zero point and the datum point
(REF); if the two values do not correspond it is necessary to set out the real dimension of the axis (see
the paragraph no. 11 “Real dimensions setting out”).
The axis X is relevant to the back gauge; the zero point is the centre of the slot; the mechanical
shoulders, where is supported the sheet during the working, are the datum point (picture 2).
The value of the axis X read on the screen is the distance between the zero point and the datum point
(REF); if the two values do not correspond it is necessary to set out the real dimension of the axis (see
the paragraph no. 11 “Real dimensions setting out”).
The axis R is relevant to the back gauge; the zero point, as per the axis Y, is the table where is
supported the die; the datum point (REF) is the lower part of the shoulder.
The value of the axis R on the screen is the distance between the zero point and the datum point (REF);
if the two values do not correspond it is necessary to set out the real dimensions of the axis (see the
paragraph no. 11 “Real dimensions setting out”).
In the picture no. 3 we can see the directions and the ways of the axes X and R movement.

6
7
5.- THE TOOLS PARAMETERS

In the numerical controls equipped with three axes, in order to put the safety positioning into action it
is necessary to insert four data relevant to the tools and precisely:

Die height (h)

Die width (d)
Axis X security (sx)
Axis R security (sr)

As per the picture no. 3, the computer executes a particular cycle for all the positioning inside the
security area. This cycle keeps more safe from any possible colusion the back gauge movements;
either the safety area or the forbidden area are determinated by the tools parameters inserted.
In the position “writing”, every request of positioning, inside the forbidden area is not accepted by the
numerical control that, after having visualized the message “FORBIDDEN AREA R/X”, it requests
again to set out the axis X and R positioning for the actual sequence.
Also in the “manual position” it is not possible to position the stops inside the forbidden area.
It is important to revise the tools parameters when the bottom die has been changed.
The safety area that has been created around the die is of 2-3 mm. about.
In order to reach the tools parameters, enter pushing the key < SET > in the “writing position”, then
write the code 65728 and confirm with the key < MEM >.
The numerical control will visualize the following message :

PARAMETRI UTENSILI TOOLS PARAMETERS

VEDI PAGINA N. XXXXX SEE PAGE NR. XXXXX

Then, after a few seconds it will propose the first parameter.

In order to modify the visualized parameter, push the key < C > to delete the actual value, then write
the new one and confirm pushing the key < MEM >; the numerical control will show automatically the
next parameter.
The key < + > and < - > will give the possibility to visualize the next and the preceding parameters to
another one just visualized.
Go out from “Tools parameters” pushing the key < END >: the computer will enter in the “manual
position”.

8
6.- PROGRAMMING

6.1 – Program writing

In the “Programming mode” it is possile to create a new program that can be executed in the
“Automatic position”.
Enter in the “Programming mode” pushing the key < SET > till obtaining the writing :

PROGRAMMAZIONE PROGRAMMING
PROG. PROG.

Then write the number which will be the name of the program to be inserted.
Push the key < MEM >; on the first line of the display, at the right end, the message “NEW” will
appear in order to indicate that in the memory a program with the same number does not exist.
Otherwise if < MOD > appears instead of < NEW >, it will mean that a program with this number has
already been memorized.
In this case please refer to the paragraph no. 6.2 “Procedure to modifiy “ or “Procedure to delete”.
If you insert a programming number which it is not included in the admitted range (1/99) an error
message will appear on the display.
The insertion of the new program is completely driven by the numerical control equipment; after a few
seconds from the appearance of the message “NEW”, the computer will request in sequence the
insertion of the dimensions that the axes have to reach in order to execute the sequence (or bending)
nr. 1; every data inserted has to be confirmed with the key < MEM > which will authorize the
numerical control to ask the insertion of the next data.
In the machines where there is the function “X DELAY”, at the end of the insertion of the axes
dimensions for the actual sequence, this data will be requested; this function will permit to delay the
movement of the X axis towards the position indicated in the next sequence after the bending of the
present sequence, of as many seconds as the number which has been inserted.
If you do not desire the function “X DELAY”, digit 0 (it is also possible to refuse the request of this
function during the writing of a program at the point of the machine parameters).
Confirm the inserted data with the key < MEM >; the computer will automatically get ready to insert
the sequence nr. 2 with the same standards shown for the bending nr. 1, and so on for the bendings nr.
3, 4 ……etc.
To end the writing of a program it is necessary to complete the actual sequence (in our example the
nr.2) and then push the < END > key. The display will visualized this message :

PROG. NN PROG. NN
INSERITO INSERTED

The computer will automatically go into the mode “VISUALIZATION”.

A single program could have 99 bendings at maximum.
In case you insert a wrong dimension during the insertion, push the key < > to delete the last digit of
the wrong number.

Example: How to insert the following program in a numerical control for 3 axes.

Seq. 1 X = 200.0 Y = 165.30 R = 100.5

If the request of an axis dimension (X,Y, R) the operator inserts a value that is not included in the
allowed range, the computer will show an error message that will indicate which secutiry limit has
been broken.
10
6.2 – Procedure to modifty

To modify an existing program it is necessary to enter in the mode “Programming”; at the request of
the program number, insert the number of the program you would to modify and push the < MEM >
key; on the first line of the screen, at the right end, the message “MOD” will appear.
The computer will request the sequence number you have to modify or delete; write this number and
then to modify the sequence, push the < MEM > key, to delete the sequence push the < C > key.
In the first case (modification of a sequence), the computer will propose you all the dimensions in its
memory, relevant to the present axes;

PROG. 55 SEQ. 01
X = 200.0

If the dimension is right, push < MEM > so that the R axis quote will be visualized.
If the dimension is not right, push < C > key: it will be deleted and the slider will appear. Insert the
new dimension and push < MEM >; then the dimension of the R axis will be visualized.
It is possible to stop the modification of a bending in any time pushing the < END > key. The
computer will request again the number of the sequenc to be modified. If you have another sequence to
modify, write its number. Otherwise push the < END > key. The computer will enter automatically in
the mode “Visualization”.
In the second case (elimination of a sequence), the remained sequences are recompacted.
For example: the program nr. 72 is composed by 5 sequence and you will delete the sequence nr. 3, the
computer will automatically transfer the sequence nr. 4 at the place of the nr. 3 and the sequence nr. 5
at the place of the nr. 4.
It is not possible to insert a new sequence between two sequences but it is possible to insert the new
one at the end of the memorized sequences.
So at the request of the sequence you would to modify you have not to write any number and push the
< MEM > key; the computer will request all the necessary data to complete a new sequence (sse the
paragraph nr. 6.1 “Procedure to program”).

Example: Elimination of the sequence nr. 2 of the program nr. 55.

6.4 – Self-learning

With self-learning we mean the possibility to memorize in the current programm the position of the
interested axis thorugh the keys of speed and direction < + >, < - >, < L/V >.
Set the computer in the mode “Programming” pushing the key < SET >; insert the number which will
be the name of the program (1/99) then push the key < MEM >.
When the computer will request the dimensions of the axis for the current sequence, instead of writing
the digit, you have to push the < TEACH > key: on the screen where there is the name of the axis, its
real position will appear and the flashing writing “Manual”.
Now the < + >, < ->, < L/V > keys are connected and the ram downstroke is possible.
So the operator can found manually the required axis position and memorize it in the current sequence
of a program pushin the key < MEM >. The control continues to ask the dimensions according to the
present axes as per the pragraph nr. 6.1 “Procedure to program”.
Obviously all the securities provided in the manual fonctioning of the machine will be active.
If the ram is not in the PMS (TOP DEAD CENTRE) and, with the numerical control sets in the
position “Programming/self-learning”, we try to move the Y axis in the positive way pushing the key <
+ >, on the screen the allarm message “LIMIT SWITCH TOP DEAD CENTRE NOT OPERATED”
will appear and the Y axis does not move.
This is a further security created to protect the machine from any possible mistake made by the
operator.

Example: Self - learning.

7.- VISUALIZATION OF A PROGRAM

With the mode “Visualization” it is possible to visualize all the programs memorized in the numerical
control.
So we can show, without taking the risk to modify the program, any program you have memorized
before.
There are two ways to reach the mode “Visualization”:
- At the end of each program writing or modification; the numerical control will propose the
visualization of the program just created or modified.
- Push the < SET > key till on the screen the following message will appear:

Write the number of the program you want to visualize then push < MEM >; if, when you exit to the
mode “Programming”, the computer propose a number of a program you are not interested to
visualize, push the < C > key and then write the number of the program to see and push < MEM >.
The computer will reach always the first sequence of the program; with the < + > key it is possible to
visualize the following sequences; with the < - > key the previous sequences.
To stop the visualization of a program, push < END >; the numerical control will reach automatically
the mode “Automatic”.

reach always the first sequence of the program; if it is necessary to start from another sequence,
different to the first, push < C > and write the number of the sequence where you want to start, then
push < MEM >.
To begin the physical execution of the piece to be bend, push the key < START >: the flashing writing
“AUTO”, the number of the program in execution, the number of the sequence in execution and the
real dimensions of the axes will appear on the display.
The mechanical machine parts will start to move.
The ram downstroke it is not permitted till the axes have reached the programmed position: now the
writing”Auto” does not flash anymore and the ram downstroke is authorized.
When, at the end of a bending, the ram reach the top dead centre automatically, the computer will start
to position the axes for the next bending.
If a finished piece is composed by four bendings, after the execution of the bending no. 4, the
computer will prepare itself to execute again the bending no. 1.
It is possible to stop the execution of a program at any time, pushing the < STOP > key.
To exit from the mode “Automatic”, push < SET > when the writing “AUTO” is not flashing: you will
reach the “Manual” mode.

stroke.
There are two ways to reach the “Manual” mode :
- Going out to the “Automatic” mode, the computer will reach the “Manual” mode.
- Push the < SET > key till the following message will appear on the screen :

MANUALE –X- R = 150.0 MANUAL –X- R = 150.0

Y = 125.50 X = 220 Y = 125.50 X = 220.0

It is possibile to move only one axis at a time: to select the axis you want to move, push the key <
ASSI > : at one pushing of this key the name of the selected axis will be visualized on the display near
the “Manual” writing; pushing < + > the selected axis will be taken away from its zero point with the
first speed (slow); pushing < - > the selected axis will come near to the zero point with the first speed
(slow). If you push the key < L/V > together with < + > and < - >, the axis will be taken away or will
come near to its zero point with the second speed (rapid).
All the securities relevant to the axis are active; the computer controls in the real time the position of
the present axes and stops their movement if they enter in any protected area.
Each breaking is visualized with a message on the display in order to give the possibility to the
operator to understand what is happened.
It is always possible to move the ram.
If the ram is at the top dead centre and you try to move the axis Y in the positive way pushing the key
< + >, on the screen the allarm message “Limit switch top dead centre not actived” will appear and the
axis does not move; it is a further security whose function is to protect the machine from any mistake
made by the operator.
To exit from the “Manual” mode, push < SET >.
At the ignition, the numerical control enters automatically in the “Manual” mode.

10.- MACHINE PARAMETERS

The machine parameters are a serial of data which fit the computer to the machine where it is
equipped.
They have to be inserted directly by the manufacturer Company and they have not to be modified by
the customer except in case of direct control by phone of OMAG.
The tampering of one or more data can seriously endanger the good operation of all the machine; the
intervention of OMAG to reset the endanged machine data IS NOT TO BE CONSIDERED
COVERED BY WARRANTY IN ANY CASE.
In the following pages there is the list of the machine parameters; it is complete. Please note that you
have not to consider the parameters relevant to the axes that are not installed on your machine.
Owing to a black-out, strong magnetic fields and fluctuating feeding of the machine it can happen that
the machine parameters get loosen, it is necessary to insert them again. The value that has to be
regenerated is inserted on the list “Machine parameters”; it is valid the last updating.
In order to protect this storage area of the computer, a software key has been inserted: to enter it is
necessary to write a numerical code, when, in the “Writing” mode, the computer asks the number of
the program you want to create.
The access code is 91043.
With the < SET > key enter in the “Writing” mode; write the code 91043 and confirm with the < MEM

11.- REAL DIMENSIONS SETTING OUT

It could be necessary to insert a real dimension of one or more axes.

Normally the loss of this data is caused by:

- black out during the axes movement

- the machine is switched off during the axes movement
- storms or strong magnetic fields
- fluctuating feeding power

In the chapter “The axes”, we have explained how to notice the real dimensions of the axes.
To modify the real dimensions it is necessary to enter in the “Machine parameters” of the numerical
control.
In order to protect this storage area of the computer, a software key has been inserted: to enter it is
necessary to write a numerical code, when, in the “Writing” mode, the computer asks the number of
the program you want to create.
The access code is 91043.
With the < SET > key enter in the “Writing” mode; write the code 91043 and confirm with the <
MEM > key; on the display the following message will appear :

PARAMETRI MACCHINA MACHINE PARAMETERS

CONFERMARE CON “MEM” CONFIRM WITH “MEM”

To enter in the machine parameters push the < MEM > key; if you do not want to enter in the machine
parameters push any other key.
When you are in the machine parameters, find the following parameters pushing < + > and < - > :

REAL DIMENSION Y AXIS

REAL DIMENSION X AXIS
REAL DIMENSION R AXIS

Pushing the key < + > the computer will visualize the parameter following the one on the screen;
pushing < - > the computer will visualize the parameter preceding the one on the screen.
To modify a data it is necessary to delete the old one pushing < C > and then, when the slider appears,
write the new data. At the end confirm with the < MEM > key.
To exit from the Machine Parameters push < END > : the computer will enter automatically in the
“Manual” mode.
Together with the numerical control and the instruction manual, we will supply you a list where the
different machine parameters appear with their associated values.
If you have to doubt to have modified unintentional any data, check the values proposed by the
computer with the ones written in the list.
If necessary, reinstate the data you can find in the list “Machine parameters”.
It is valid the last updating.

12.- MODIFICATION OF “DEAD AREA”

How modify the “Dead Area” parameter for Y, X and R axes.

For this operation the user must have the manual instruction of numerical control and a good
knowledge of numerical control working.

1. Go in Machine Parameters
2. Reach the “X axis dead area” parameter and set out it at 0 (zero)
3. Reach the “X axis tolerance” parameter and set out it at 2
4. Pushing the key [END] go out from Machine Parameters
5. Carry out the following positioning and notice the position reached from X axis showed on the
display; therefore calculate the difference between the memorized position and the reached
one.

Difference
Memorized Position Reached Position
(Memorized p. – Reached p.)
20 mm.
50 mm.
100 mm.
200 mm.
300 mm.
400 mm.
500 mm.

6. Calculate the mean of differences; the mean is obtained summing up the values of column
“Difference” and dividing the sum for 7.
Example :

Difference
Memorized Position Reached Position
(Memorized p. – Reached p.)
20 mm. 19.8 mm. 0.2 mm.
50 mm. 49.8 mm. 0.2 mm.
100 mm. 99.7 mm. 0.3 mm.
200 mm. 199.7 mm. 0.3 mm.
300 mm. 299.6 mm. 0.4 mm.
400 mm. 399.6 mm. 0.4 mm.
500 mm. 499.6 mm. 0.4 mm.

The sum of column „Difference“ is : 2.2 mm.

The mean is : 2.2 mm. : 7 = 0.31 mm.; approximate the value at 0.3 mm.

7. Memorize the obtained value in the “X axis Dead Area” parameter

8. Repeat the test of point 6
9. If the positioning is satisfying sum to the value “X axis Dead Area” the value 0.2 and
memorize it in the “X axis Tolerance” machine Parameter; if, at the end of operations the
positioning is not satisfying, contact our assistance service.

Repeat the operations for Y axis considering the fact that the accuracy is centesimal instead of decimal
and the stroke of Y axis is different from the X axis one.
