Exercise 25

This document summarizes the process for testing two hypotheses using paired sample t-tests on education data from Ohio. It tests whether the mean difference between writing and reading scores is zero and whether the mean difference between math and science scores is zero. For both hypotheses, it finds that the mean difference is not equal to zero based on a statistically significant t value, meaning the null hypothesis is rejected. The mean writing score is higher than the mean reading score, and the mean science score is higher than the mean math score.

Exercise 25: Page 256: Using the data in the Excel file Ohio Education Performance, test the

hypotheses
that the mean difference in writing and reading scores is zero and that the mean difference in math and
science scores is zero. Use the paired-sample procedure.

Writing and Reading scores

Step 1: Establish hypothesis

H0: x̅ writing scores - x̅ reading scores = 0 or H0: the mean difference in writing and reading scores is
zero.

H1: x̅ writing scores - x̅ reading scores # 0 or H1: the mean difference in writing and reading scores is not
zero.

Step 2: Methodology: Paired Two-Sample Test for Means

Step 3: Descriptive Statistic Report

Paired Samples Statistics

Mean N Std. Deviation Std. Error Mean
Pair 1 Writing 84.94 31 9.986 1.794
Reading 81.29 31 10.396 1.867
Pair 2 Science 71.71 31 13.120 2.357
Math 64.19 31 15.083 2.709

Step 4: Paried Samples Correlations Report

Paired Samples Correlations

N Correlation Sig.
Pair 1 Writing & Reading 31 .801 .000
Pair 2 Science & Math 31 .935 .000

Pair 1: Writing and Reading scores:

The two variables Writing and Reading scores have a positive relationship (0.801) and the correaltion is
significant with p <=0.01. The connection between the two variables is strong 0.8001, which means
Writing and Reading scores move in the same direction. The higher the writing score is, the higher the
reading score and vice versa.

Step 5: Conclusion
 T = 3.150
 P < 0.05 (0.04)
 Reject H0, accept H1
 The difference between the mean of writing scores and the mean reading score does not euqal
to zero. The mean of writing score is larger than the mean of reading score.

Math and Science scores

Step 1: Establish hypothesis:

H0: x̅ math scores - x̅ science scores = 0 or H0: the mean difference in math and reading science is zero.

H1: x̅ math scores - x̅ science scores # 0 or H1: the mean difference in math and science scores is not
zero.

Step 2: Methodology: Paired Two-Sample Test for Means

Step 3: Descriptive Statistic Report

Paired Samples Statistics

Mean N Std. Deviation Std. Error Mean
Pair 1 Writing 84.94 31 9.986 1.794
Reading 81.29 31 10.396 1.867
Pair 2 Science 71.71 31 13.120 2.357
Math 64.19 31 15.083 2.709

Step 4: Paried Samples Correlations Report

Paired Samples Correlations

N Correlation Sig.
Pair 1 Writing & Reading 31 .801 .000
Pair 2 Science & Math 31 .935 .000

Pair 2: Science and Math scores:

The two variables Writing and Reading scores have a positive relationship (0.935) and the correaltion is
significant with p <=0.01. The connection between the two variables is extremly strong 0.935, which
means Science and Math scores move in the same direction. The higher the science score is, the higher
the math score and vice versa.

Step 5: Conclusion

 T = 7.710
 P < 0.01
 Reject H0, accept H1
 The difference between the mean of science scores and the mean math score is not euqal to
zero. The mean of science score is larger than the mean of math score.
