Applied Mechanics 1

Department of Civil Engineering Fall 2022

National Taiwan University Instructor: Chia-Ming Chang

Final Exam
Tuesday, December 20, 10:20 am-12:10 pm, Putong 303

READ THESE COMMENTS BEFORE STARTING THE EXAM!!

• This is a closed-book exam! Calculators are allowed to use in this exam.

• Write your name and ID# on the answer booklet.

• g = 9.81 m/sec2.

• Read problems and units carefully. “Direction” may be necessarily included in your answers.

• Total is 100 %.

Problem 1 (15% = 5% + 10%)

The jib crane is supported by a pin at C and rod AB, as shown in the
figure. The rod can withstand a maximum tension of 40 kN. If the
load has a mass of 2 Mg, with its center of mass located at G, answer
the following questions.
(a) Determine the maximum allowable distance x.
(b) Determine the horizontal and vertical components of the
reactional force at C.

Problem 2 (20% = 10% + 5% + 5%)

The cable supports the three loads

shown in the figure, where P1=4000 N
and P2=2500 N.
(a) Determine the sags yB and yD of
points B and D. (Hint: Use the
equilibriums at B, C, and D)
(b) Determine the tensile force TBC of
cable BC.
(c) Determine the tensile force TBC of
cable CD.

Problem 3 (20% = 10% + 5% + 5%)

A cylinder having a mass of 200 kg is to be supported by the cord which

wraps over the pipe, as shown in the figure. The static friction
coefficient is 0.2. The cord passes two times over the pipe (i.e., the total
angle of the cord contacting the pipe is 540o).
(a) Derive the associated equation that can solve the problem. (Hint:
𝑑𝑇
= 𝜇𝑠 𝑑𝜃. Remember that the unit of the angle must be in radians)
𝑇
(b) Is the force F larger than the cylinder weight if the cord reaches
static equilibrium?
(c) Determine the largest vertical force F that can be applied to the cord
without moving the cylinder down.

Problem 4 (20% = 5% + 5% + 10%)

When tidewater A subsides, the tide gate automatically swings open to drain marsh B. The length of the
gate is 6 m (inward to the paper), and its height is 4 m. The density of water considered is 1.0 Mg/m3.
The stop block D only provides the horizontal reaction force.
(a) Determine the location of the resultant force due to the fluid pressure at the left side (A).
(b) Determine the resultant force introduced by the fluid pressure at the right side (B).
(c) For the condition of high tide shown, determine the horizontal reactions developed at the hinge C.

Problem 5 (25% = 10% + 5% + 10%)

Consider the C-shaped section shown in the figure.

(a) Determine the moment of inertia of the cross-sectional
area about the x axis.
(b) Locate the centroid 𝑥̅ of the cross-sectional area.
(c) Determine the moment of inertia of the cross-sectional
area about the 𝑦’ axis.
