SI Assignment ND

This document contains instructions for a homework assignment involving problems related to the normal distribution. It includes 8 problems across 4 sections covering topics like the amount of rain in a city, passengers on a bus, aluminum can recycling, medical emergency response times, job interview lengths, and the effects of a new muscle relaxant drug. Students are asked to use normal distribution calculations to find probabilities for scenarios like the number of inches of rainfall, number of bus passengers, number of cans recycled, response times and interview lengths.

ASSIGNMENT

Instructor: HAIDER ABBAS NAQVI TOTAL MARKS: 20

PROBLEMS RELATED TO NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

Amount of Rain in a City : The average amount of rain per year in Greenville is 49 inches. The
standard deviation is 8 inches. Find the probability that next year Greenville will receive the
following amount of rainfall, assuming the variable is normally distributed.
a. At most 55 inches of rain.
b. At least 62 inches of rain.
c. Between 46 and 54 inches of rain.

Passengers on a Bus: On the daily run of an express bus, the average number of passengers is
48. The standard deviation is 3. Assume the variable is normally distributed. Find the probability
that the bus will have;
a. Between 36 and 40 passengers.
b. Fewer than 42 passengers.
c. More than 48 passengers.
d. Between 43 and 47 passengers.

Recycling: Aluminum Cans: One environmental group did a study of recycling habits in a
California community. It found that 70% of the aluminum cans sold in the area were recycled
with standard deviation of 15%.
(a) If 400 cans are sold today, what is the probability that 300 or more will be recycled?
(b) Of the 400 cans sold, what is the probability that between 200 and 300 will be recycled?

Medical: Flight for Life: The Flight for Life emergency helicopter service is available for medical
emergencies occurring from 15 to 90 miles from the hospital. Emergencies that occur closer to
the hospital can be handled effectively by ambulance service. A long-term study of the service
shows that the response time from receipt of the dispatch call to arrival at the scene of the
emergency is normally distributed, with a mean of 42 minutes and a standard deviation of 8
minutes. For a randomly received call, what is the probability that the response time will be
(a) between 30 and 45 minutes?
(b) less than 30 minutes?
(c) longer than 60 minutes?
PROBLEMS RELATED TO SAMPLING THEORY
Job Interview: Length: The personnel office at a large electronics firm regularly schedules job
interviews and maintains records of the interviews. From the pas records, they have found that
the length of a first interview is normally distributed, with mean is 35 minutes and standard
deviation is 7 minutes.
(a) What is the probability that a first interview will last 40 minutes or longer?
(b) Nine first interviews are usually scheduled per day. What is the probability that the average
length of time for the nine interviews will be 40 minutes or longer?

Drugs: Effects: A new muscle relaxant is available. Researchers from the firm developing the
relaxant have done studies that indicate that the time lapse between administration of the drug
and beginning effects of the drug is normally distributed, with mean is
38 minutes and standard deviation is 5 minutes.
(a) The drug is administered to one patient selected at random. What is the probability that the
time it takes to go into effect is 35 minutes or less?
(b) The drug is administered to a random sample of 10 patients. What is the probability that the
average time before it is effective for all 10 patients is 35 minutes or less?
(c) Comment on the differences of the results in parts (a) and (b).
