Use multiples to
determine figures
in a pattern
Using Multiples in Nonnumeric Patterns
Look at the pattern below. The repeating pattern has three figures:
heart, triangle, diamond. What if you want to know the 20th figure in this pattern?
You could extend the pattern...or you could use your knowledge of multiples.
Since there are 3 figures in this pattern, all multiples of 3
(Figures 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18) in this pattern will be diamonds.
To determine the 20th figure in the pattern...
You know that the 18th figure will be a diamond because the pattern has 3 figures.
The 19th figure is a heart and the 20th figure is a triangle .
Practice
Look at each pattern below. Use multiples to determine a given figure in the pattern.
1. Circle the 12th figure in the pattern. 2. Circle the 9th figure in the pattern.
3. Circle the 15th figure in the pattern. 4. Circle the 23rd figure in the pattern.
5. Circle the 18th figure in the pattern. 6. Circle the 34th figure in the pattern.
7. Circle the 40th figure in the pattern. 8. Circle the 27th figure in the pattern.

Numeric Patterns
A numeric pattern is a list of numbers that follow a rule.
Patterns can include rules with one operation or more than one operation.
Single Operation Multiple Operations

The first term (starting number) is 2. The first term (starting number) is 2.
The rule for this pattern is add 4 or n + 4. The rule for this pattern is add 3, multiply by 2.

Understanding

inputs and
Numeric Patterns: Tables outputs
A numerical pattern can be organized in a table. This is called an
“In/Out Table” or “Input/Output Table.” This means you put a number IN (the input),
apply the rule, and then a number comes OUT (the output).
IN 15 18 20 25 ? You can identify the rule as n + 7 (add 7) by
OUT 22 25 ? 32 36 looking at the columns where you know the
input and output numbers. 22 - 15 = 7
25 - 18 = 7
20 + 7 = 27 36 - 7 = 29 Now, apply the rule to the unknown boxes.
Practice
Identify the rule for each table below. Then, fill in the missing boxes.
1. IN 5 10 12 18 2. IN 2 3 5 7
OUT 2 7 11 15 OUT 6 9 15 30
Rule: ______________ Rule: ______________
3. IN 12 20 32 44 4. IN 7 10 13
OUT 3 6 8 OUT 12 15 21 25
Rule: ______________ Rule: ______________
Given the rule, fill in the table below.
5. IN 1 3 5 9 12 6. IN 6 14 18 20 24
OUT OUT
Rule: n + 6 Rule: n ÷ 2
7. IN 2 5 6 9 11 8. IN 25 31 48 57 96
OUT OUT
Rule: n x 7 Rule: n - 10
