Dividing by 2, 4 or 8 (Interactive)
Dividing by 2, 4 or 8 (Interactive)
A number is divisible by 2 if the last digit is divisible by 2 (an even number). For example,
578 is divisible by 2 because the last digit is 8 and 8 ÷ 2 = 4.
A number is divisible by 4 if the last two digits are a multiple of 4. For example, 312 is
divisible by 4 because the last two digits are 12 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3. You can check this by halving
the number twice to see if you get a whole number answer. For example, half of 12 is 6 and
half of 6 is 3.
A number is divisible by 8 if the last three digits are a multiple of 8. For example, 3248 is
divisible by 8 because the last three digits are 248 and 248 ÷ 8 = 31. You can check this by
halving the number three times to see if you get a whole number. For example, half of 248 is
124; half of 124 is 62 and half of 62 is 31.
