What I Have Learned

In this lesson, we focused on choosing the appropriate quantitativeresearch design. Specifically:

1. What is the difference between the experimental and non-experimentalresearch design?

Experimental research design allows the manipulation of 1 or more independent variables to measure
what will be their effect on the dependent variables for their cause and effect relationships be
determined. Non-experimental research design on the other hand does not use the manipulation or
alteration of the dependent variables and just mainly relies on interactions, observations, and
interpretations to arrive to a certain conclusion.

Experimental research design mainly focuses on emphasizing the reliability, generalizability, and
replicability that relies mainly on statistics or numerical data that are gathered while non –
experimental research design on the other hand mainly emphasizes on how the participants explain
their experiences within a natural setting that relies on their interpretations.

Experimental research design uses a pre-determined independent variable and dependent variable to
determine the causal relationship or patterns that arise when the situation is controlled or manipulated
while in non – experimental research design on the other hand does not define variables in advance to
ensure the validity and reliability of the conclusion that can be arrived to.

Experimental research design includes true experimental, quasi experimental, matched comparison
group, time-series design, and repeated measure design while non-experimental research design
includes descriptive research design, comparative research design, correlational research design, and
survey research design.

2. What are the types of experimental design and non-experimentaldesign?

Experimental research design have 5 different types that include true experimental, quasi experimental,
matched comparison group, time-series design, and repeated measure design while non-experimental
research design have 4 different types that include descriptive research design, comparative research
design, correlational research design, and survey research design.

3. State the factors that the researcher may use in selecting appropriatequantitative research
design.
The factors that the researcher may use in selecting the appropriate research design are the
research problem which is the main concern when conducting a research, personal experience
which are the research’s own personal training and experience, and lastly the audience which is the
study to be disseminated by the research paper.

Assessment

Showcase the knowledge and skills you have learned in this lesson by answeringthe
assessment activity below. Determine the type of quantitative research design being described
in eachstatement. Write your answer on the space provided before the number.

Research Approach
1. It is the plan and the procedure that span the discussion from broad
assumptions to detailed methods.

Experimental Research Design

2. It is a quantitative research design that is solely based on a scientific
activity called experiment.

True Experimental research

design
3. This quantitative research design is considered free from any bias
because participants or respondents in the study are chosen randomly.

Quasi Experimental
4. The type of quantitative research design which is prone to bias because
the participants or respondents in the study are chosen purposively. It usually employs pre-test,
intervention, and post-test.

Matched Comparison Group

5. This quantitative research design is used when the researcherwill choose
the participants that shows close similarities with experimental or treatmentgroup based on one or
more important variables.

Time-Series Design
6. It is a quantitative research design in which the researcher willchoose one
group of respondents and will study it over time using multiple series of pre- test, post-test, and
measures and observations.

Repeated Measure Design

7. This quantitative research design will compare the performance of the
single group in the first experimental treatment to their performance in another experimental
treatment.

Non-experimental Design
8. It is a type of quantitative research design that does not involve
manipulation of control or independent variable.

Descriptive Research Design

9. It is a quantitative research design which describes a population,
situation, or phenomenon.

Comparative Research Design

10. This quantitative research design states the differences and similarities
between two or more groups.

Correlational Research design

11. It is a type of quantitative research design which involves observing two
variables in order to establish a statistical correlation between them either positive or negative
correlation.

Survey Research Design

12. This research design involves employing survey to a sample or entire
population in order to describe attitude, preferences, or behavioral patterns.
