Lecture 1 Introduction To Robotics

This document provides an introduction to robotics. It defines a robot as an automatically controlled, reprogrammable, multipurpose manipulator that can be programmed in three or more axes and can be either fixed or mobile, as defined by the International Organization for Standardization. The Robotics Industry Association further defines a robot as a reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move materials through variable programmed motions to perform various tasks. The document then provides a brief timeline of milestones in robotics development and discusses how robotics draws from various disciplines including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and more. It also lists some potential impacts of robots on society and the economy.

Application of Robotics Manipulator
The International Organization for
Standardization gives a definition of robot in
ISO 8373:

“An automatically controlled, reprogrammable,

What is a multipurpose, manipulator programmable in
three or more axes, which may be either fixed in

applications."
What is a ROBOT?
The Robotics Industry Association (RIA) gives a
definition of robot as:
"A robot is a reprogrammable, multifunctional
manipulator designed to move material, parts,
tools or specialized devices through variable
programmed motions for the performance of a
variety of tasks."
