Description Bimbot Essay Stem

The document discusses a proposed solution to reduce plastic waste in oceans. Up to 13 million metric tons of plastic ends up in oceans each year, harming marine life. The proposed solution is a 3D printer that uses plastic filament made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) that dissolves in hot water. A prototype of the printer has been created that uses PVA filament which dissolves when boiled in water, avoiding plastic pollution. Implementing the design more broadly could help reduce ocean plastic waste.

DESCRIPTION

It is estimated that up to 13 million metric tons of platic ends up in the ocean

each year. The equivalent of a rubbish or garbage truck load’s worth every
minute.Fish, seabirds, sea turtles, and marine mammals can become entangled in
or ingest plastic debris,causing suffocation,starvation,and drowning.Hence,I
found a solution.

The proposed solution is to invent a 3D printing machine, which prints plastic

materials that is designed to dissolve in hot water. My prototype uses an
extruder, which contains ultimaker PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) to print plastic
materials. It can’t dissolve in cold or warm water, but we can use boiling water
above 118 C to break the particles. The plastic which is stored in the extruder
contains small amount of citric acid. The water will still be drinkable and does
not contain any germs.Hence, the disposal of plastic waste will decrease.

The prototype could be implemented in a practical application,as follows:

(1)Research and development:The first step would be to conduct extensive
research and development to create a viable prototype of the 3D printing
machine. This could involve experimenting with different types of plastic
materials and creating a machine that can print complex shapes and designs.
(2)Testing and refining:Once a prototype is created,it would need to be tested
extensively to ensure that it can produce plastic material that dissolves in hot
water as intended.Any issues or defects in the in the prototype would need to be
identified and addressed before moving on to the next step.
(3)Manufacturing and production:After the prototype is successfully testedand
refined, the next step would be to manufacture and produce 3D printing machine
on a larger scale. This would involve setting up a manufacturing process and
supply chain to produce and distribute the machines.
(4)Marketing and sales:To get the product to the market ,a marketing and sales
strategy would need to be developed to generate awareness and demand for the
3D printing machine.This could involve advertising,trade shows,and other
promotional activities to reach potential customers.
(5)Maintenance and support:Finally, ongoing maintenance and support would
be necessary to emsure that the 3D printing machines continue to function
properly and meet the needs of customers. This could involve providing
technical support, troubleshooting, and repairs as needed.
The specific implementation of a prototype of a 3D printing machine that prints
plastic material that can dissolve in hot water would depend on a number of
factors, including the target market, manufacturing capabilities and
budget. However, these steps could provide a general outline for how such a
prototype could be implemented in a practical application.

ORIGINALITY

Eventough my prototype is complex,it is based on on waste materials such as

broken furnitures. My idea about my prototype is unique as it can differ in
material selection, surface finish, manufacturing speed and cost.

BENEFITS
*Eco friendly
Since PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) can dissolve in water,it does not pollute the
environment. The water will not contain any bacterias and it never spreads any
infectious.

*Contribute to climate change

My prototype can help to reduce carbon emissions by up to 50% and reduce
waste by up to 90%,making it a highly efficient way to produce parts and
components.

*Reduce errors
3D printing provides an intricate production process simply not repeatable by
humans.Specific parts in certain industries are repeatedly showing the
complexity this technique offers. It can reduce or even eliminate tool production
costs and labour.

*Maintains the balance of ecosystem

The amount of plastic wastes thrown in the ocean will decrease and up to 65%
of marine species will be free from extinction.Besides,PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) is
free from toxic chemical additives and pollutants that threatens marine lives on
aglobal scale.
