1. Ms. Johnson baked a cake and divided it into 8 equal pieces. If she gave 3 pieces to one student and 2 pieces to
another, what fraction of the cake did she give away?

Given: 8 equal pieces, 3 pieces to one student, 2 pieces to another

Required: fraction of the cake given away
Equation:
Fraction of the cake give away = number of the cake given away / total number of pieces
Solution: number of cake given away = 3+2 = 5
total number of pieces = 8
Fraction of the cake given away = 5/8
Answer: Ms. Johnson gave away 5/8 of the cake.

2. In a basket of apples, 5/6 are red and the rest are green. If there are 18 apples in total, how many are green?
Given: 5/6 of the apples are red.
Total number of apples = 18
Required: number of green apples
Equation: number of green apples = total of apples – number of red apples
Solution: number of red apples = 5/6 x 18 = 15 ( cross multiply the 18 and 6, the common factors that can divide to 6
and 18 is 6, so, 18/6 = 3, and then multiply the 5 to 3 is equal to 15, therefore I get the 15)
number of green apples = 18-15 = 3
Answer: There are 3 green apples.

3. If Tommy used 1/3 of his pocket money to buy a toy and 2/5 on a book, what fraction of his money is left?
Given: Tommy used 1/3 of his pocket money to buy a toy
Tommy used 2/5 of his pocket on a book
Required: Fraction of Tommy’s money left
Equation: Fraction of Tommy’s money left = fraction spent on toy / fraction spent on book
Solution: Fraction spent on toy = 1/3
Fraction spent on book = 2/5
Fraction of the money left = 1/3 + 2/5 = 5/15
= 5/15 + 6/15 = 11/15
= 1 or 15/15 - 11/15 = 4/15
Answer: Tommy has 4/15 of his money left.

4. Mrs. Rodriguez had a ribbon that was 3/4 yard long. If she cut it into pieces, each 1/8 yard long, how many pieces did
she get?
Given: 3/4 yard long
each piece cut from the ribbon was 1/8 yard long
Required: number of pieces Mrs. Rodriquez got
Equation: number of pieces= total length of ribbon / length of each piece
Solution: total length of the ribbon = 3/4 yard
length of each piece = 1/8 yard
number of pieces = 3/4 / 1/8 = 3/4 x 8/1 ( I made it 8/1 because when diving ms base on what I know we
reciprocate it the divisor)
= 3/4 x 8/1 = 24/4 = 6
Answer: Mrs. Rodriguez got 6 pieces.

5. A pizza was divided into 10 slices. If Sarah ate 3/5 of the pizza, how many slices did she eat?
Given: A pizza was divided into 10 slices
Sarah ate 3/5 pieces of the pizza
Required: Number of slices Sarah ate.
Equation: number of slices Sarah ate = 3/5 x total number of slices
Solution: number of slices she ate = 3/5 x 10 = 6
Answer: Sarah ate 6 slices of pizza.
6. Johnny has 2/3 of a chocolate bar. If he shares it equally among 4 friends, what fraction of the chocolate bar does
each friend get?

Given: 2/3 of a chocolate bar

4 friends
Required: Fraction of the chocolate bar each friend gets
Equation: Fraction of the chocolate bar each friend gets = chocolate bar Johnny has / 4 friends
Solution: Fraction of the chocolate bar each friend gets = 2/3 / 1/4 = 1/6
Answer: Each friend gets 1/6 of the chocolate bar.

7. There are 24 students in a class. If 5/6 of them attended a field trip, how many students went on the trip?
Given: 24 students
5/6 were attended
Required: number of students who went on the field trip
Equation: number of students who went on the field trip = number of students attended on field trip / total number of
students in a class
Solution: number of students who went on the field trip = 5/6 / 24 = 20
Answer: 20 students who went on the field trip.

8. Emily read 4/5 of a book on Monday and 3/8 on Tuesday. What fraction of the book is left for her to read?
Given: 4/5 of a book Emily read on Monday
3/8 of a book Emily read on Tuesday
Required: Fraction of the book left for Emily to read
Equation: Fraction of the book left for Emily to read = fraction of a book Emily read on Monday + fraction of a book Emily
read on Tuesday
Solution: Fraction of the book left for Emily to read = 4/5 + 3/ 8
= 47/40
= 1 or 40/40 - 47/40 = -7/40
Answer: The fraction of the book is left for her to read is -7/40.

9. A farmer harvested 7/8 bushels of apples. If he sold 2/3 of them, how many bushels did he have left?
Given: 7/8 bushels of apples
2/3 sold

Required: number of bushels the farmer had left

Equation: number of bushels the farmer had left = 7/8 – 2/3
Solution: number of bushels the farmer had left = 7/8 – 2/3 = 5/24
Answer: The farmer had 5/24 bushels of apples left.

10. Mr. Brown poured 1/4 liter of juice into each of the 6 glasses. How many liters of juice did he use in total?
Given: ¼ liter of juice
6 glasses
Required: total liters of juice used
Equation: total liters of juice used = ¼ x 6
Solution: total liters of juice used = ¼ x 6 = 3/2 or 1.5
Answer: Mr. Brown used 1.5 liters of juice in total.
