Fluid Mechanics Final Exam Summer 2021

This document provides instructions for a fluid mechanics exam consisting of 4 problems worth 25 points each. The exam covers topics including: [1] calculating head loss between two points given pressure and mass flux; [2] determining flow rate from a pump rating, efficiency, and discharge conditions; [3] computing the reaction force on a pipe undergoing a 90 degree turn; and [4] deriving a dimensionless relationship for velocity in Couette flow using the method of repeating variables.

Summer Semester

Name:__________________________________________ 7 July, 2021

School ID:___________________________

Duration: 2.5 hours

General Instructions:

Read and understand each problem well before begin work. Show your solution
details clearly and thoroughly as they will be evaluated for completeness. The
maximum number of points that can be earned is indicated at the beginning of each
problem. Any clearly stated and correct partial work not leading to a solution will be
granted a partial credit. GOOD LUCK!

1. (25 points)

In the figure immediately below, the fluid is water, and the pressure gage reads P1 =
180 kPa gage. If the mass flux is 15 kg/s, what is the head loss between points 1 and
2?

1
2. (20 points)

Water is being pumped from a reservoir to the top of a hill, where it is discharged as
shown in the figure below. The pump, which is 70% efficient, is rated at 150 kW.
Find the flow rate at which water is being discharged from the pipe. Neglect minor
losses.

3. (25 points)

Consider water flow through a horizontal, short pipe at a rate of 80 kg/min. The velocity
at the inlet is 1.5 m/s and that at the outlet is 16.5 m/s. The pipe makes a 90° turn to a
vertical direction before the water is discharged. Disregard the weight of the pipe and
water. Taking the momentum-flux correction factor to be 1.04 at both the inlet and the
outlet, determine the reaction force in the horizontal direction required to hold
the pipe in place.

2
4. (25 points)

Consider fully developed Couette flow—flow between two parallel plates separated by
distance h, with the top plate moving and the bottom plate stationary as illustrated
in the Fig below. The flow is steady, incompressible, and two-dimensional in the xy-
plane. Use the method of repeating variables to generate a dimensionless relationship for
the x-component of fluid velocity u as a function of fluid viscosity 𝜇, top plate speed V,
distance h, fluid density 𝜌, and distance y. Show all your work.
