LUBRICATION - Cont'd

Electric Motors

All electric motora whether fitted with grease nipples or not should be re-
lubricated with a good quality lith.ium based grease such as Mobil Oil Co. Mobilux
No.2 or equivalent every three years or every 9,000 running hours whichever is the
more frequent.

TABLE SADDLE AND BED SLIDEWAYS

The table vee and flat slides are lubricated automatically, as are also the
traversa box and cross slide mechanisms. The drainage oil is returned to the
hydraulic tank via a gauze filter which may require occasional cleaning, see chart
(15 - Fig.2). .

WHEELHEAD SLIDE AND ELEVATING SCREW

The ~heelhead slide and elevating screw can be lubricated after removing
the cover (7 - Fig.2) on the right hand side of the column and then adjusting the
position of the elide by means of the elevating handwheel (47 - Fig.8) until the
nut together with the oiling nipples are accessible.

LUBRICANTS

These machines are run and tested in otrr works en the following types of
lubricant:

Supplier Grade
HYdraulic Propulsion System Mobil Oil Co. Ltd. Vacuoline 1405
Oil nipples Mobil Oil Co. Ltd.· Vactra heavy medium oil
Wheel Spindle Lubricating
System Mobil Oil Co. Ltd. Velocite No ¿ 3
Wheelhead Gear Box Mobil Oil Co. Ltd. Vactra heavy medium oil

Other suppliers will recommend equivalent oils on application to them.

IMPORTANT
It is essential that lubrication of this machine be systematically carried
out at regular intervals as indicated.

~: Ensure that the area adjacent to all lubricating points is free from
abrasiva before oiling or filling up with oil.

SURFACE GRINDING MACHINE MODEL 1411

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

The hydraulic system comprises two circuits via: the main pressure for operating
the table traverse and the secondary pressure for the·cross feed. It is driven by
a 3 H.P. motor through the two helical gear pumps built as a single unit. Two
separate relief valves are fitted, one for controlling the pressure in the table
circuit, the other for the cro ss feed circuit.

Control of the pressures in the two systems is by means of the pressure regulat-
ing valves which are spring loaded.

HYDRAULIC PRESSURE ADJUS'IMENT

Hydraulic pressure can be adjusted after remov:i.ng th.e cover over the pressure
regulators (22) and (20) in Fig.4. The regulator (22 ~ Fig.4) controls the hydraulic
pressure in the main circuit which should be l~O~)/in2 (10,5 kg/cm2) for all normal
requirements. The pressure can be checked by fitfíng a pressure gauge in place of
the hexagon headed plug (19- Fig.4). This setting should be carried out with the
table run out to its extreme position and speed control lever (24- Fig.3) in its
fully open position. With the pum switch D- ·g.5) held in the 'on' position
the pressure should read f5Ó:lb/in lO 5 kg cm • If the pressure is low the lock-
nut (23 Fig.4) on the regulator should be loosened and the regulator rotated clock-
wise while the gauge is being observed. To restart the table: reverse the knob
( 27 - Fig. 7) and keep hydraulic pump '. start/ stop' switch (D - Fig. 5) in the 'on'
position until table moves.

The secondary or cross feed is aQjust~d~th regulator (20- Fig.4). Check

the pressure which should be lOO.lb[in2 (7 kg/cm2) by fitting a gauge in place of
the hexagon plug (18- Fig.4)~ This set lng s ould be carried out with the saddle
on 'continuous movement' and run out to one end of its stroke. If the pressure is
low the locknut (21 - Fig.4) on the regulator should be loosened and the regulator
rotated clockwise while the gauge is being observed.
Note: Cross feed auto trip switch (44- Fig.7) must be in the 'auto' condition
when carrying out this procedure.

I MPORTANT
Do not adjust pressure regulators before first fitting a pressu;ce gauge.
Damage to the pump can be caused by excessive pressure setting.

Never attempt to fit a pressure gauge while the hydraulic pump is running.

OIL TEMPERATURE STABILISER UNIT

This unit is situated on the left' hand side of the machine directly in front
of the coolant tank. The fan motor is electrically coupled to the hydraulic pump
starter and requires no attention from the operator.

Once a month olean the radiator so that the system is free from dust and
foreign matter. To carry out this service remove the main cover ~~d direct air
from a compressed air system through the radiator until it is olear.

Failure. to carry out this service will result in a loss of efficiency and
cause over-heating of the hydraulic oil.

the traverse handwheel pull out lever (26 - Fig.7) at the same time rotating the
traverse handwheel very gently thua allowing the sliding gear to mesh freely with
the table operating pinion. One revolution of the handwheel will reault in a table
traverse movement of 1~' (38mm) approx.
Note: Table power traverse cannot be restarted until lever (26 - Fig.7) has been
puahed in to dis-engage the hand traverse handwheel. If the table start lever
(31 - Fig.7) is lifted to start the table under power befare the hand traverse is
disengaged the hydraulic pump will stop. Note also that if table is stopped using
the table trip lever (45 - Fig.7) and the hand traverse then engaged by lever
(26 - Fig.7) the pump will also stop. These interlocks are provided to prevent
the user from uaing hand traverae whilat hydraulic preaaure is being applied to the
table traverae.

HYDRAULIC TABLE TRAVERSE

Befare atarting the pump, aee that the table apeed control lever (26 - Fig.5)
is turned to the 1 off 1 poaition i.e., fully anti-clockwise and that the auto-cross
feed is turned off by means of the cross f eed selector knob (22 - Fig.5). The
selector knob is in the 'off' position when the diagram WITHOUT arrowa ia in the
top position. The hydraulic pump may now be started by pressing upwards the
hydraulic pump start/stop key switch (D - Fig.5). The table reversing dogs (28 - Fig.7)
are then adjuated along the slide to give the required length of table traverae.
The table may be started by partially opening the table apeed control lever
(31 - Fig.7). If the table speed control lever (31 - Fig.7) is further rotated in
a clockwiae direction the table speed will gradually increase until the top speed of
120 ft/min. (36 m/min.) is reached. Manual reversal of the table traverse ia
provided by operation of knob (27 - Fig.7).

Note: If table faila to atart check that the hand traverse dis-engagement lever
(26 - Fig.7) is preased fully home. Note that increaaed table speed will increaae
the over-run of the table past the reveraing doga, and thia point ahould be
controlled when setting the dogs.
See alao further note about over-run knob.

The table movement may be alightly irregular on firat starting up, if this
irregularity does not disappear after the first few reversala it may be necessary
to bleed the table cylinder to drive out any air lock. This is done by allowing
the table to over-run the doga, which permita the table to run to the extreme limita
of ita movement, thus uncovering the bleed valve (16 - Fig.3). The valve should
be unscrewed two or three turns and left for a few seconda with the hydraulic pump
switch (D - Fig.5) held in the 1 on 1 position befare re-tightening.
The table should be then run to the oppoaite limit of movement and the same .
procedure carried out, using the aecond bleed valve at the opposite end of the
table.

TABLE TRAVERSE

HYDRAULIC TABLE TRAVERSE (Cont/d)

Shock absorbing stops are fitted to the cylinder ende to avoid damage should
the table be rUn at high speed past the reversing dogs. It is however, inadvisable
to persistently bump the cylinder ends at high ~peed, and the table speed should
always be reduced prior to "running out" the table by use of the control lever
(31 - Fig. 7).
To stop the table in any position, the control lever (31 - Fig.7) should be
rotated to the "OFF" position, i.e. fully anti-clockwise. For stopping under
normal conditions the table r~trip lever (45 - Fig.7) should be depressed. This
will allow the table to complete ita stroke befare bringing it to rest in the load-
ing position i.e. with the table rightwards. When re-starting, the table r~trip
lever only requires lifting upwards.

TABLE TRAVERSE OVER-RUN ADJUSTMENT

The adjustable knob (30 - Fig.7~ is used to either shorten or lengthen the
amount of over-run at the point of table reversal. This adjustment may be necessary
if full table speed is not used or a very smooth reversal is required.

To lengthen the over-run turn knob (30 - Fig.7) clockwise and reversa this to
shorten over-run.
Note: If the over-run. is adjusted to its extreme it is possible for the table to
run into the cylinder end pockets. This should be avoided if possible.

CROSS FEED

HAND OPERATION

.The cross feed can be operated by hand or hydraulically. For hand operation
the handwheel (34 - Fig. 7) is used. This is engag~¡d· by lever (39 - Fig.7).
Note: Due to the mechanical interlock provided hand operation óf the croas feed is
rendered inoperative if cross feed select~r (37 - Fig.7) is not at OFF •
.
It is advisable to rotate the handwheel very gently whilst the lever
(39 - Fig.7) is pressed forwards and downwards thus allowing the croas feed screw
to mesh freely with the croas feed nut.

Clockwise rotation of the handwheel moves the table and saddle towards the
rear of the machine giving a movement of 0.4" (lOmm) per revolution, one graduation
being equal to .001" ( ,02mm). A fine feed dial (33 - Fig. 7) can be engaged by
tightening the clamp knob (34 - Fig.7) in a clockwise direction. The fine hand
feed dial when rotated clockwise moves the table towards the rear of the machine
one revolution producing a movement o~ .008" (0,2mm) and one graduation being equal
to .0001" ( ,002mm).

CROSS FEED (Contd)

AUTOMATIC CROSS FEED

For automatic cross traverse the cross feed selector (37 - Fig.7) can be set to
give either intermittent or continuous feed, ac'c'ording to req_uirements.

The setting of this control - is as follows:

l. OFF This is the centre position as shown by diagram having
"no arrows".

2. INTERMITTENT Anti-clockwise one station, resulta in a cross feed movement

at every table reversal.

3. CONTINUOUS Fully clockwise, the croas feed movement will be continuous.

Note: Before it is possible to set this control the hand cross feed must be dis-
engaged by turning lever (39- Fig.7) forwards and up~ards.

_The cross feed reversing dogs (41 - Fig.7) shoul d be adjusted along the slide
to give the req_uired length of table cross traverse. Manual reversal of cross
traverse is provided by operation of l~ver (38 - Fig. 7).

Control of the magnitude of the intermittent feed and speed of the continuous
feed is effected by adjusting the croas feed rate control knob (43 - Fig.7).
Clockwise rotation producing an increase in feed.

Variations in cross feed magnitude occur when the cross feed selector is at
INTERMITJENT and the cross feed rate control is altere~ . It therefore becomes
necessary to adjust the intermittent cross feed balancing knob (42 - Fig.7) so that
eq_ual feeds are applied in both directions of the cross saddle.

Turn knob (42) anti-clockwise to in~rease the feed per table reversal when
the saddle is moving from the front of the machine towards the rear. Turn clockwise
to decrease the feed.

When the saddle moves from the rear towards the front of the machine the feed
is directly controlled by the cross feed rate control knob.

When both the table and croas feed are running depression of the table ·
'r~trip' lever (45 - Fig.7) will halt the croes feed immediately and the table
will run rightwards to the loading position.

CROSS FEED (CONTD)

AUTOMATIC CROSS FEED (CONTD)

The ·cross traverse may be set to reverse automatical1y or to make one pass and
trip out. This is set by turning button (44 - Fig.7) in the centre of lever
(45 - Fig.7) to the desired condltion. With arrow on button in the top position
the cross traverse reverses automatically. With button turned clockWise through
90° the saddle will make one pass and stop the table also stopping in the loading
position.

The cross feed movement of the tab1e may be slightly irregular on first start-
ing up, if this irregularlty does not disappear after the first few revercals it ·
may be neccssary to b1eed the cross feed cylinder to drive out any air locks. This
is done by selecting continuous feed and allowing the saddle to run through the
cross feed reverse dogs thus permitting the sadd1e to run to the extreme limits, of its
movements. With the saddle in the rear position the right hand bleed valve
(17 - Fig.2) shou1d be unscrewed two or three turns and 1eft for a few seconds.

The saddle should then be run to the extreme forward position and the same
procedure carried out using the left hand bleeder va1ve (17 - Fig.2).

SADDLE LOCK (36 - Fig.7)

Turn tommy bar by hand clockwise to lock.

Note: Unlock before operating hand or power cross traverse.

WHEEL SPINDLE

The wheel spindle can be run at two different speeds for the purpose of maintain-
ing the surface speed of the grinding wheel at approximately 5,300 ftlmin. (1615~min).
Flat pulleys are situated within the belt guard at the rear of the machina. The two
speeds available by changing the position bf the flat belt are 2,040 and 2,700 r.p.m.

To start the wheel spindle the wheelhead start/stop key switch (e - Fig.5)
should be pressed upwards once to start the full flow lubrication to the wheel spindle.
After a few moments repeat upward pressure to start the wheel spindle. If the wheel ·
spindle fails to start, check the oil level in the lubrication tank (3 - Fig.2).
Fill up if necessary and repeat the previous procedure.
Note: If for sorne reason the oil supply fails, the pressure switch (56 Fig.lO)
automatically stops both the wheel spindle and lubrication pump. The setting of the
pressure switch is critical, therefore care must be taken when adjustment is made,
as oversetting will defeat the object of such a device.

AXIAL THRUST ADJUSTMENT

This is effected by means of knob (57 - Fig.ll) located on the left hand side
of the wheel spindle. The knob has a spring loaded ball device which divides the
rotation into twenty "clicks", each "click" in a clockwise direction reducing the
axial wheel spindle clearance by 0~00013" (0,0033mm).

16.
SURFACE G~INDING MACHINE MODEL 1411

VffiEELHEAD

BELT TENSION ADJUSTMENT

This is effected by means of the adjusting screw (59 - Fig.12) which after the
1ocking screw (60 - Fig.l2) has been released raises or lowers the motor to adjust
the belt tension. After adjusting the belt to the desired tension lock screw
(60 - Fig.l2).

WHEELHEAD ELEVATION - Mode1 14118 on1y

The vertical hand adjustment of the wheelhead is contro11ed by the handwheel

(47 - Fig.B). Rotation anti-clockwise lowers the wheel to contact the workpiece
One revolution of the handwheel raises or lowers the wheelhead .100" (2,5mm) and
each graduation on the dial is equal to 0.0005" (O,Olmm). A fine feed adjusting
knob (50 - Fig.B) is also fitted which has a spring loaded ball dividing the
rotation into 10 "clicks". Rotation anti-clockwise lowers the head; one complete
revolution giving a feed of 0.001" (0,02mm) and one "click" 0.0001" (0,002mm).
Located at the rear of the handwheel assembly is a locking lever (49 - Fig.B)
which when clamped upwards allows the fine feed knob to be operated. An adjustable
zero (48 - Fig.B) is fitted and can be rotated about the periphery of the handwheel.
This is locked by the knurled screw.

WHEELHEAD ELEVATION - Model 1411SP only

Power rise and fall to the wheelhead is provided and to operate this the lever
(51 - Fig.9) should be lifted to raise and depressed to 1ower the wheelhead.
~: The downfeed handwheel (52 - Fig.9) is interlocked with the power rise and
fall lever (52 - Fig.9). When the handwhee1 is engaged i.e. (pushed inboard) for
hand operation and the power rise and fall becomes inoperative.

Pull the handwheel out to allow the power rise and fall to be operated.
An over-riding limit switch to the power rise and fall is mounted integral
with the switchgear cabinet and provides a maximum power "up" stop. ·When power
traversing downwards release lever (51 - Fig.9 ) at a suitable distance say 1/16"
(1,5mm) from the surface of the component to be ground. Wait until the dial
(54 - Fig.9) stops and then engage handwheel (52 - Fig.9) and apply feed until
sparking justs starts. Press knob (55 - Fig.9) and turn dial (54 - Fig.9) anti-
clockwise to indicate required amount of feed. Continue applying feed with hand-
wheel (52 - Fig.9) until dial is at zero. A fine adjustable zero (53 - Fig•9) is
provided.

Grinding Wheels

Stlio!ldard sizes 10" diameter x 3" Bore x i"to 3" wide to suit flange UC 6319

Diamond to suit Diamond Holder

-f' diameter x 7" long.

The externa! grinding wheels are mounted on flanges which can be readily withdrawn from the wheel
spindle. Balance weights or wedges are fitted to the wheel flange, añd it is essential that the wheel is
properly balance,j by means of these wedges befare the flange carrying the wheel is fitted to the wheel
spindle.
To fit a new wheel on to the flange, unscrew locknut which.has a left hand thread and withdraw flange.
Remove existing wheel and fit new wheel on to the fixed flange. Refit flange and screw locknut tightly.
The ensemble should then be fitted on the taper of the balancing mandrel supplicd and placed upon
a balancing tool for preference or parallel blocks. The wedges should then be loosened and moved
until the wheel is perfectly balanced.

To Balance the Wheel

Proceed in the following manner

l. Securely lock wheel on to flanges-fix balance

weights diametrically opposite.

Dress wheel.

2. Remove assembly from wheelhead and mount

on Balancing Mandrel-place on Balancing
Unit, and allow to turn until it stops, then
mark top centre of wheel.

3. Move balance weights to 90° from mark and

diametrically opposite.

4. Move weights equally towards mark approx.

-~in. at a time until assembly remains static
in any position.
