Title of Project: Wind Power Plant Design Using MATLAB.

Abstract:
The rate of development of wind energy has been dramatic. Today, other than hydropower, it is the
most important of the renewable sources of power. In this situation, we need to placing over and
over wind energy power plant. Wind power plants, as traditional power plants, must have the
necessary power quality to ensure the efficiency and efficiency of the power system to which they
are linked, as well as to serve consumers connected to the same grid. In modern wind power plants,
applications such as reactive power compensation, static transmission switches, energy storage, and
variable-speed generation are typical. Now a days many modern winds power plants are fitted with
cutting-edge technologies, allowing them to deliver excellent operation while generating renewable
electricity for the grid. While several technical factors influence the operation of wind power plants,
this paper focuses on power efficiency. In this report, we show how to design a wind power plant
model using MATLAB. Here, we also discuss about the simulation and simulation results.

Introduction:
Wind power is the process of harnessing energy from the movement of the wind and converting it
to useful forms of mechanical power and electricity. Today, most wind energy comes from turbines
– essentially giant windmills. The wind turns two or three of the turbine’s propeller-like blades
around the turbine’s rotor. The rotor is connected to a main shaft, which spins a generator to create
electricity. Although the name does not suggest as much, wind power is actually a form of solar
power. Sunlight causes temperature differences across the Earth’s surface, and the differences in
surface temperatures force warm air to rise and create winds. Two major forces determine the speed
and direction of wind on a global basis. Due to differential heating of the earth at equatorial and
polar regions. ii. Spinning of earth about its axis produces a Coriolis force, which is responsible for
deviation of air currents. Localized uneven heating is responsible for local winds. Local winds are
produced due to two mechanisms: Due to differential heating of land surface and water bodies due
to solar radiation. ii. Due to differential heating of slopes on the hillsides and that of low lands. Rate
of change of wind speed with height. At the earth’s surface, wind speed is always zero. It increases
with height above the ground. The wind near the earth’s surface is retarded by surface roughness.

Methodology:
Instead of using electricity to make wind like a fan wind turbine use wind to make electricity. The
blades of a wind turbine work similarly to the wings of an airplane: as air moves past the rotor, it
produces lift, which generates a turning force. Some turbines use direct drive technology, which
connects the rotating hub directly to the generator. The electricity from the generator goes via cables
to a transformer, and then to the wind farm’s substation, where it is converted to the right voltage
for the grid or local network. In wind turbine power plant, using wind turbine induction generator,
three phase transformer, three phase capacitance load, three phase programmable voltage source, 2
input line, and gain has been used.

Types of Wind Turbines:

There are two different types of wind turbines. These turbines are often used for microgeneration,
meaning that they can be installed for a home to generate electricity. There are two basic types of
wind turbines:
1. Horizontal-axis turbines
2. Vertical-axis turbines
The size of wind turbines varies widely. The length of the blades is the biggest factor in determining
the amount of electricity a wind turbine can generate. Small wind turbines that can power a single
home may have an electricity generating capacity of 10 kilowatts (kW). The largest wind turbines
in operation have electricity generating capacities of up to kilowatts (10 megawatts), and larger
turbines are in development. Large turbines are often grouped together to create wind power plants,
or wind farms, that provide power to electricity grids.

Components of Wind Turbine:

An anemometer and a wind vane on top of the nacelle are used to determine the optimal location
for a wind turbine. When the wind shifts, motors transform the nacelle, and the blades with it, to
face the new direction. The blades even ‘pitch,' or angle, in order to draw the maximum amount of
strength from the wind. Wind turbine induction generator, three phase transformer, three phase
capacitance load, three phase programmable voltage source, two input lines, and gain are used in
wind turbine power plants.

Wind turbine characteristics:

The operating principles of wind turbines are based on two well-known processes. The first is to
convert the kinetic energy of the air during exercise into mechanical energy. This is achieved using
aerodynamic rotor blades and various methodologies of mechanical power control. The second
process is the conversion of electromechanical energy through a generator that is transmitted to the
power grid. Wind turbines can be classified according to mechanical power control and further by
speed control. All turbine blades convert the movement of air through the airfoil into torque and
adjust that torque with the goal of capturing as much energy as possible while avoiding damage. At
the top level, turbines can be categorized as either stall adjustment (with active stall as
reinforcement) or gradual adjustment. Some interesting challenges arise from the drive to build
larger, more durable wind turbine rotors. The rationale is that, with current designs, the power
generated is theoretically proportional to the square of the blade length, however, theoretical mass
increases cubically. Aeroelastic tailoring aims to improve the ratio between increased power capture
and mass by offering enhanced combined energy capture and system durability. As such, the design
and full system analysis of two adaptive, aero elastically tailored wind turbine blades are considered
herein. One makes use of material bend-twist coupling, whilst the other combines both material and
geometric bend-twist coupling. Each structural design meets a predefined coupling distribution that
approximately matches the stiffness of a baseline blade. The performance characteristics of the wind
turbine systems are assessed and compared in terms of power production, load alleviation and pitch
system considerations. The blade with both couplings displays scope for potential increases in
energy yield. Additionally, beneficial flap wise load alleviation is demonstrated by the adaptive
blades from both International Electrotechnical Commission prescribed fatigue, and extreme
operational gust analysis. Finally, the adaptive blades display power smoothing capabilities and
reductions in pitch rate, however, increases in blade root torsional moment possibly contrast these
pitch system benefits.

Wind Turbine Applications:

1. The wind energy is used to propel the sailboats in river and seas to transport men and materials
from one place to another.
2. Wind energy is used to run pumps to draw water from the grounds through wind mills.
3. Wind energy has also been used to run flour mills to grind the grains like wheat and corn into
flour.
4. Now-a-days wind energy is being used to generate electricity.
Wind energy may be considered as the world’s fastest growing energy source.

Result analysis:
In this project, there is two outputs of active power and reactive power. Also, two input added in
wind turbine induction generator. When we run the simulation, we see the active power value is
transience at a time to 20 sec then it is stable to rest of the time and we get the output power is
0.9MW. We are set to the time for 30 sec. The reactive power is -6.408e+05.

Discussion and Conclusion:

Wind turbine technology has demonstrated the potential for contributing to the energy. It is an
inexpensive source of electric power, competitive with or in many places cheaper than coal or gas
plants. A wind turbine power plant was simulated in this project using MATLAB. A parameter
block was used for simulation. The power output produced by the small wind turbine generator was
addressed and evaluated in this project. The output power is dependent on the value of the blade
radius and the wind speed or wind velocity, according to the output data. As a result, whether either
or both parameters rise, the amount of energy produced by the device rises dramatically. Wind
turbines offer a unique opportunity to harness energy in areas where our country's populations need
it most. The Energy Department continues working to deploy wind power in new areas on land and
at sea and ensuring the stable, secure integration of this power into our nation's electrical grid.
