Emt Assignment I (1 5 23)

The document describes a basic civil and mechanical engineering course outline that covers topics related to belt drives, couplings, and power transmission using belts and shafts. The course consists of 16 questions related to deriving equations for belt drive components, designing belts and couplings to transmit specific power levels, differentiating between belt types, and calculating parameters such as belt length and power transmission capacity. Students are assigned two questions each from this list to complete and submit by the given deadline.

BASIC CIVIL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (BCME)

1. Describe the construction and working of Flange coupling with a neat sketch.
2. Design a muff coupling to transmit 25 kW at 300 r.p.m. The allowable shear stress for
the shaft and key are 40 MPa and tensile & compressive stress is 120MPa. The material
for the muff is cast iron for which the allowable shear stress may be assumed as 15 MPa.
3. Derive the expression for Length of a Cross Belt Drive.
4. Two pulleys, one 450 mm diameter and the other 200 mm diameter are on parallel shafts
1.95 m apart and are connected by a crossed belt. Find the length of the belt required and
the angle of contact between the belt and each pulley. What power can be transmitted by
the belt when the larger pulley rotates at 200 rev/min, if the maximum permissible
tension in the belt is 1kN, and the coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is
0.25?
5. Differentiate V-belt drive and flat belt drive.
6. Design a cast iron flange coupling to transmit 25 kW at 900 r.p.m. from a diesel engine to
a water pump. The following permissible stresses may be used:
Shear stress for shaft, bolt and key material = 60 MPa
Crushing stress for bolt and key = 100 MPa
Shear stress of cast iron = 12 MPa. Draw a neat sketch of the coupling.
7. Derive the expression for Length of an Open Belt Drive.
8. For a flat belt, prove that 𝑇1 /𝑇2 = 𝑒𝜇𝜃
where T1 = Tension in the tight side of the
belt, T2 = Tension in the slack side of the belt,
µ = Coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley, and
 = Angle of contact between the belt and the pulley (in radians)
9. Sketch the cross-section of a V-belt and label its important parts.
10. Derive the expression for Length of a Belt Drive.
11. a) Differentiate rigid and flexible couplings.
b) List out various flexible couplings and their applications.
12. a) Explain, with the help of neat sketches, the types of various flat belt drives.
(b) Discuss the various important parameters necessary for the selection of a particular
drive for power transmission.
13. An engine shaft running at 120 r.p.m. is required to drive a machine shaft by means of a
belt. The pulley on the engine shaft is of 2 m diameter and that of the machine shaft is 1
m diameter. If the belt thickness is 5 mm; determine the speed of the machine shaft, when
1. there is no slip; and 2. there is a slip of 3%.
14. For a flat belt, prove that 𝑇1 /𝑇2 = 𝑒𝜇𝜃cossecβ
where T1 = Tension in the tight side of the
belt, T2 = Tension in the slack side of the belt,
µ = Coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley, and
 = Angle of contact between the belt and the pulley (in radians)
15. Find the power transmitted by a belt running over a pulley of 600mm diameter at 200
r.p.m. the coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.25, angle of lap 160 0 and
maximum tension in the belt is 2500N.
16. Two pulleys, one 450mm diameter and other 200mm diameter are on parallel shafts
1.95m apart and are connected by a crossed belt belt. Find the length of the belt required
and angle of contact between the belt and each pulley.
What power can be transmitted by the belt when the larger pulley rotates at 200
rev/min, if the maximum permissible tension in the belt is 1kN, and the coefficient of
friction between the belt and pulley is 0.25?
