EE809 DC-AC SYSTEM INTERACTION
Assignment 2

1. A six-pulse thyristor bridge converter connected to 230V (line-line), 50Hz, 3 phase, ac supply. If the
reactance on ac side is 0.1502 ohm and commutation angle is 15° and firing angle is 20°, calculate dc
load current.
2. A three-phase fully controlled bridge converter is connected to ac supply voltage of 250V per phase and
a frequency of 50 Hz. The source inductance is 5 mH. The load current on dc side is 25A. If the load
consists of a dc voltage source of 400 V having an internal resistance of 1ohms then calculate required
delay angle (α), overlap angle (μ), distortion factor (DF), displacement factor (DPF), total harmonic
distortion of ac source current (THDI), crest factor of ac source current (CF), the power factor (PF), ac
source rms current (Is), thyristor rms current (IT), and thyristor rms voltage (VT).
3. Calculate the output dc voltages as the percentage of rms ac voltage of a three-phase fully controlled
bridge ac-dc converter for constant load current at firing angles of 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 120°, and 140° with
overlap angles 0°, 10°, 20°, and 30°.
4. The transformer secondary line voltage to a three-phase bridge rectifier is 180kV. Calculate the dc
voltage output for a delay angle of 15° and an overlap angle of 20°.
5. A HVDC link with the resistance of the line 23 ohms, commutating reactance of the rectifier 22 ohms
and the commutating reactance of the inverter 21 ohms, is delivering 200MW dc power with the ac line
voltage to the rectifier being 180kV, and that of the inverter is 165kV. Assume that the delay angle is
now 15°. Calculate the dc voltages at the rectifier and inverter terminals as well as the inverter’s
extinction angle.
6. A twelve pulse HVDC link system with series connected six pulse converters are fed from star/star and
delta/star transformers is operating with an ac line voltage to the rectifier of 175kV from 13.6 kV line
voltage on input converters and 33kV ac line on LCI. When the dc current is 1200 A, the rectifier delay
angle is 15° and the inverter’s extinction angle is 25°. The resistance of the line is 23 ohms, commutating
reactance of the rectifier is 22 ohms and the commutating reactance of the inverter is 21 ohms. Calculate
the dc voltages at the rectifier and inverter terminals as well as the ac line voltage at the inverter.
7. An HVDC bipolar link using a 6-pulse converter is supplying power of 500 MW at ±100𝑘𝑉. The
rectifier station is working at a delay angle 𝛼 = 15˚. Estimate (a) No-load DC voltage, (b) AC voltage
on the converter side of the transformer, (c) Transformer secondary rating, (d) Peak inverse voltage, (e)
Peak-to-peak ripple, and (f) Current on the secondary side of the converter transformer.
