New Product Mini Project

This document appears to be a report submitted as part of an MBA program. It discusses the development of a new product - a compostable bamboo toothbrush. It notes some of the issues with traditional plastic toothbrushes, such as being made from non-renewable petroleum and containing toxic materials. The report then outlines the project to develop a more sustainable bamboo alternative. It acknowledges limitations to using bamboo but argues this product could help reduce plastic waste. An executive summary provides an overview of the full report.

PREFACE

Innovative Idea Development is the overall process of taking a service or a product from

conception to market. New products and services are meant to fill a consumer demand or an

opportunity in the marketplace.

New products generally differ from a product line extension. Examples of new products

include things like one-cup gourmet coffee machines. Keurig machine offered the gourmet

coffee experience previously only found in a coffee shops, right at home. Examples of

product line extensions include products like Diet Coke. Coca-Cola company used Diet Coke

to target the market of soda drinkers that wanted a lower calorie soda than their regular Coke

product.

However the more loose definition of New Product includes not only new to the world

products and services, but also new to the market and new to the company products. It is

basically catering to a heretofore untapped customer need or want or desire.

This project has been carried out, to develop one such new product, in my favourite product

category – Oral Hygiene . That too, environment friendly - Toothbrush.

Who doesn’t use Toothbrush? And there are toothbrush that are already selling like hot cakes.

But this project aims to target several deeper issues.

For the past decade or so, residents of Mother Earth have been acquainting themselves with

the issues pertaining to the use of plastic. We know, by now, that plastic is not only deadly to

the Eart but also the human and animal life forms it supports. Despite this, plastic remains a

crucial aspect of our lives. In fact, it is the very first polymer over 98% of the world’s

population comes into contact with - the toothbrush. It goes without saying that toothbrushes

are an almost inalienable aspect of civilised life today. But at the same time, when the world
is now coming up with sustainable alternatives to the use of plastic products, maybe it is time

to truly understand what disadvantages plastic toothbrushes hold for human and planet life.

Second is Plastic is a product of liquid gold, i.e., petroleum. The very first polymer that we

use to clean out mouth is made of an indigestible and poisonous substance. Unfortunately, the

toothbrush consists of other toxic materials too. In order to make toothbrushes, plastic is used

in addition to nylon (for the bristles), rubber and this product, invariably, comes into contact

with crude oil by-products. Naturally, since plastic is a product of petroleum, this natural

resource is extracted in large quantities to cater to the toothbrush needs of the world. This

ensures that the already depleted global reserves of petroleum are further drained.

This mini project has been carried out to develop some degree of innovation in this product -

the Bamboo toothbrush, to offer variety to the esteemed customers and to thereby stir

energize an already saturated market of the Toothbrush Industry.

Chapter 9

Limitations

1. They require preservation

2. Shrinkage: Bamboo shrinks much greater than any other type of timber especially

when it loses water.

3. Durability: Bamboo should be sufficiently treated against insect or fungus attack

before being utilized for building purposes.

4. Jointing: Despite prevalence of various techniques of jointing, structural reliability of

bamboo is questionable

5. Most of the bamboo brushes on the market still have nylon bristles, so at least that

part of the brush has to be thrown away.

6. The only fully biodegradable toothbrushes use natural bristles made from pig or

badger hair which dentists claim are too hard and abrasive on our delicate gums.

7. Natural bristles retain moisture and can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

8. Most still end up in regular waste.
