Quiz Baru Power Electronic A

The document contains a quiz with two questions testing knowledge of power electronics. Question 1 asks to explain two types of bias for a p-n junction, which are forward and reverse bias. Question 2 asks to calculate the firing angle of a single phase halfwave controlled rectifier given the supply voltage, load resistance, and average output voltage.

MARK/NOTES

QUESTION 1 4 Marks
Explain TWO (2) types of bias for a p-n junction.

i. Forward biasing
• In forward biasing, the positive supply is connected to the p-
terminal and the negative supply is connected to the n-type of the 2mark
device.
• This voltage cancels the potential barrier and provides a low
resistance path to the flow of current.
ii. Reverse biasing
• In reversed bias the n-type is connected to the positive terminal of
the battery and the p-type is connected to the negative terminal.
• The reverse potential increases the strength of the potential barrier. 2mark
The potential barrier resists the flow of charge carrier across the
junction. It creates a high resistive path in which no current flows
through the circuit.

QUESTION 2
A single phase halfwave controlled rectifier with resistive load 100Ω supplied a DC 6 Marks
voltage of 150V, 60Hz with average output voltage 40V. Calculate firing angle of
rectifier.
