Jimma University: Group Members

This document contains the solutions to an assignment on power electronics from Jimma University Institute of Technology. It lists the names of 5 students in a group and provides tables and explanations for questions about diode and thyristor rectifiers. The tables show results for total harmonic distortion, ripple voltage, and other metrics under different load conditions and firing angles. It explains that ripple voltage increases with firing angle for a single phase rectifier but decreases for a three phase rectifier. The first harmonic of input current for a bridge rectifier would be 60Hz. It also discusses the inverse relationship between ripple voltage and switching frequency.

C) Explain the relationship between THD of input current and firing angle

 The relationship between firing angle and THD of input current is that as firing angle increase the
THD also increases they have direct linear relationship

D) Explain the relationship between ripple of dc voltage and firing angle

 For single phase as the firing angle increase the ripple voltage also increases but not for three
phase so for three phase as firing angle increase the value of ripple voltage decrease, but as we
can see from the table as firing angle increase ripple voltage in single phase rectifier weather it is
half or full bridge or center-tap the ripple also increase.

E) What is the effect of RC and RL load on the ripple of dc voltage?

 The effect of RL and RC is that they are making the output wave form smooth and ripple free.

F) What is the frequency of first harmonic of input current for B6 rectifier? What do you expect about the
first harmonic on the line current of a B12 rectifier?

 By using frequency counter we get 60Hz our expectation is it will stay the same.

 The ripple and switching frequency have inverse relationship, as switching frequency increases
the ripple voltage decreases.

Answer for A and B is in simulation schematic design

Answer for C

 After we substitute the value of alpha that we get from selective harmonic elimination method we
end to the simplified form of b1 = 1.0684Vs this is amplitude of fundamental component of
modulated output voltage wave form. The amplitude of fundamental component of un modulated
output voltage wave form is given by b1 = 4Vs/pi = 1.27324vs The amplitude of the fundamental
voltage is 83.91% or 0.8391 times the amplitude of fundamental component of un modulated
voltage wave.
