Wave Optics (Assignment 2)

The document discusses concepts related to wave optics and diffraction, including: 1) Diffraction occurs when the size of the aperture or obstacle is comparable to the wavelength of light, causing the wave nature of light to be apparent. The essential condition for diffraction is that the wavelength is similar in scale to the diffracting structure. 2) Fresnel distance depends on wavelength and describes how diffraction causes the spreading of light. The diffraction pattern from a slit depends on the wavelength of light, with smaller wavelengths producing patterns that spread over larger angles. 3) In a double slit experiment, interference produces a pattern of bright and dark fringes, while diffraction from a single slit yields a central maximum flanked by dim

Wave optics ( assignment 2)

1. What do you mean by diffraction of light? What is the essential condition for diffraction of wave?

2. What is Fresnel distance? How does the spreading of light due to the diffraction of light depend on
the wave length of light?

3. Draw the intensity pattern for single slit diffraction and double slit interference.hence state three
differences between interference and diffraction.

4. (a) In a single slit diffraction experiment, a slit of which ‘d’ is illuminated by red light of wavelength
650nm. For what value of ‘d’ will: (i) the first minimum fall at an angle of diffraction of 30°, and (ii) the
first maximum fall at an angle of diffraction of 30°? (b) Why does the intensity of the secondary
maximum become less as compared to the central maximum?

5. In a single slit diffraction experiment, with of the slit is made double the original width. How does this
affect the size and intensity of the central diffraction band ? Explain.

6. When a tiny circular obstacle is placed in the path of light from a distant source, a bright spot is seen
at the centre of the shadow of the obstacle. Explain why?

7. A slit of width ‘d’ is illuminated by light of wavelength 5000 Å. For what value of ‘d’ will the first
maximum fall at an angle of diffraction of 30˚.

8. In a single slit diffraction experiment, first minimum for red light (660 nm) coincides with first
maximum of some other light of wavelength λ. Find the value of λ.

9. How would the diffraction pattern of a single slit be affected when :

(i) the width of a slit is decreased?

(ii) the monochromatic source of light is replaced by a source of white?

10. Two slits are made one millimetre apart and the screen is placed one metre away. What should the
width of each slit be to obtain 10 maxima of the double slit pattern within the central maxiyof the single
slit pattern?

11. A parallel beam of light of wavelength 500 nm falls on a narrow slit and the resulting diffraction
pattern is observed on a screen 1 m away. It is observed that the first minimum is at a distance of 2.5
mm from the centre of the screen. (a) Find the width of the slit. (b) the distance of the second maximum
from the centre of the screen. (c) the width of the central maximum.

12. (a) State Huygen’s principle. Using this principle explain how a diffraction pattern is obtained on a
screen due to a narrow slit on which a narrow beam coming from a monochromatic source of light is
incident normally. (b) Show that the angular width of the first diffraction fringe is half of that of the
central fringe.
13. (a)If a monochromatic source of light is replaced by white light, what change would you observe in
the diffraction pattern?

(b) sketch the pattern of fringes formed due to diffraction at a single slit showing variation of intensity
with angle θ.

14. What is the condition for first minima in case of diffraction due to single slit? Find the relation for
width of central maximum in terms of wavelength λ, width of slit and separation between slit and screen
D.

15. A beam of light of wavelength 600 nm, from a distant source falls on a single slit 1.00 mm wide and
the resulting diffraction pattern is observed on a screen 2 m away. What is the distance between the
first dark fringes on either side of the central bright fringe?
