Figure 3. Basic blocks diagram of the MP2M2.3BWD3-V850.

Note 1: In this project the DC Device 1 and 3 are the PV fields connected through the AMPT Optimizer and the DC Device 2 and
4 are the Battery Energy Storage Systems.
Note 2: The AMPS 2x 2M2.3BWD3-3L-V850-MV34.5 power station includes two of these converters connected to one MV
transformer.

The solution includes the low voltage AC panel, the last level DC boxes and batteries connection cabinet and the Control &
Communication Panel.

The number of MPPT algorithms depends on how the PV connection is set:

▪ Connection through PV optimizers: the number of simultaneous MPPT corresponds to the number of optimizers.
▪ Connection without PV optimizers: each DC/AC power module will be in charge of one MPPT, thus in the power
station there shall be two (2) MPPTs.

Every power block has a master-slave operation mode to optimize product life cycle, the DC/DC booster converter shall
operate only when some of these conditions happen:

▪ The maximum allowed AC power is less than the available PV power.

▪ Some Grid Support functionalities are enabled.

This solution includes a DC/DC booster (buck booster converter configuration is also available) converter that implies the
PV operating voltage must be higher than BESS voltage, actually the minimum voltage difference that the equipment can
manage is 25 Vdc. The maximum BESS voltage value should be at least 50 Vdc below than the minimum operation voltage
of the PV field to avoid loss of PV production in case the connection to the PV field is not done through PV optimizers.

The MP-WD3 power converter provides the best performance, even in the hottest place, by means of:

▪ New cooling system with vertical top-bottom air flow.

▪ Optimized cooling capacity with advanced features to ensure temperature regulation in the most demanding
conditions.
▪ Filters to protect inputs and outputs from moisture and dust.
▪ Regulated ventilation flow: Ensure maximum power saving depending on inverter's instant loads.

▪ AC-Decoupled from grid voltage: Isolated from external instabilities.

Figure 4. Power Converter top-bottom air flows

MP-WD3 power converter maximizes the performance ratio due to the modular design:

▪ Some maintenance works can be done in one power module while the other power modules keep operating.
▪ Hot transitions between converters belonging to the same power block: if one of the power modules belonging to a
power block trips due to a non-critical error, the other one keeps exporting or charging the PV energy into the BESS.

1.3.2 Power deratings

The rated output current for the power module is defined at 1550 Vdc, with an ambient temperature of 50 ºC (122ºF) and
below 1000 masl. This power can be increased or decreased according to the different factors defined below:

• Derating curve due to the ambient temperature: the WD3 inverter has been design for extreme ambient conditions,
regarding ambient temperature the PV inverter allows working at rated power for ambient temperature up to
122ºF (50ºC) without performing any derating. Lower temperature values of temperature allow an overrating as
indicated in the derating curve Vs ambient temperature.

Figure 7. Derating curve due to DC link voltage for DC/AC and DC/DC power module

• Derating curve due to altitude above sea level: GPTech power converters are designed for an optimum performance
at height location below 1,000 meters above sea level (MASL). For altitude above 1,000 MASL, variation of air
density must be considered in order to obtain the maximum heat evacuation of the inverter and therefore the
maximum output power of them.
The rated temperature of the inverter is affected as ¡Error! No se encuentra el origen de la referencia. shows.
The altitude is introduced in the converter derating by the modification of the operation temperature used for the
temperature derating curve. This modified operation temperature is calculated using the ambient temperature plus
a value which depends on the altitude as ¡Error! No se encuentra el origen de la referencia. shows.

Figure 8. Temperature operation value increasing by altitude

The altitude also must be considered for the maximum system voltage, as result of increasing altitude, air density is
reduced and thus air isolation. The WD3 has been design in accordance international standards considering
correction factors for creepage and clearance distance so voltage derating is not required up to 2,000 MLS.
Meanwhile, altitude impact diminishing current density mainly due to cooling effect of the air is also diminished.
Following table indicates maximum ambient temperature allowed for an altitude range up to 4,000 MSL for the
WD3 inverter as well as the maximum AC and DC voltage at different heights.

1.4.2 AMPS Controller Functionalities

AMPS Controller is intended to support a seamless PPC integration and it also has different features such as monitoring,
control algorithms, error handling, protections and device management.

This section provides a brief explanation of the main features of the AMPS Controller’s controls. The different control
parameters must be agreed between GPTech and customer1.

1 Additional control algorithms can be included under request.

a) Different control interfaces

With these different interfaces, the AMPS Controller avoids to over-write the same command from different
controllers.

▪ Remote: AMPS is controlled via PPC

▪ Manual: AMPS Controller is controlled via HMI.
▪ Local: AMPS is controlled via SCADA.
▪ Maintenance: AMPS is controlled via webserver.

b) Soft Start-Stop

The Soft Start-Stop control provides the capacity of starting up or shutting down all controllable equipment in
a safe and controlled way.

c) Active and Reactive Power Control

AMPS Controller implements an active and reactive power control. The active and reactive set points can be set
through an external Modbus reference or through the local HMI. These set points are smartly divided between
online converters in order to reach them, with the following considerations:

▪ Limitation of the external set points. The external set points should be within the limits related to the
configuration parameters. Otherwise, the set points values are saturated to those limits.
▪ Configurable ramp rates for individual active power set point to the converters.
▪ The reactive references sent to the DC/AC follow a default ramp rate.
▪ Distribution of individual references depending on number of DC/AC out of service.
▪ Smooth transition when there is any change in the number of DC/AC running.

d) ESS management

The AMPS Controller is able to manage an external ESS. It includes:

Dynamic Active Power Limits (DAPL)

The Dynamic Active Power Limits control block is a group of limitations according to ESS characteristics and
control signals. It consists on limit curve characteristics defined by parameters and instantaneous limit defined
by control signals generated by the ESS.

In addition to the limitation function, this block calculates the active power reference and maximum charge and
discharge power.

SOC Recovery

The AMPS Controller manages the internal active power reference adding or subtracting an offset to the
external reference to keep the SOC within acceptable limits.

When there are several AMPS in the same PV plant, it is recommended to implement this feature at the PPC
level to reach an optimal performance.

BESS Protection

▪ Converter stopping before BESS contactors opening

▪ Monitoring of the BESS container components (HVAC, FSS, Doors…)
▪ Communication error between Master BMS and the AMPS Controller
▪ Any other requirements from the Warranty Terms of the Battery Manufacturer

e) Error Handling

The system is able to detect and manage special situations, which can be arranged depending on the
importance:

▪ Alarm: Event that causes a minor disturbance in the normal course of the control system, but allows
the system to continue working with a minor impact.
▪ Error: Event that causes a serious disturbance in the control system and stops the system. The system
is locked until the error disappears.

1.5.3 LV wiring
The connection between the inverter and the transformer LV side are made with copper plates, sized to support the
maximum current of the inverter. These plates will be covered by a grounded metallic case to avoid any contact with them.

All the control and sensor wiring between the inverter and the MV skid or Pad mounted transformer are also included. They
will depend on the final selected component and functionality.

The number of cables, materials and sections considered in the project is subject to variation according to market availability
at the moment of the project execution.

1.6 GROUNDING
The grounding system is designed such that, in the case of an electric system failure, there is no potential hazardous voltage
in any internal or external accessible point of the Inverter Station where people can either stand or circulate.

The site grounding system must ensure total ohmic resistance lower than 10 ohms.
