Engage
Introduction
Every business is eager to understand what their customers think about their products and
services to make better business decisions. Though research can be conducted in multiple
ways, surveys have been one of the most effective methods of gathering information about
customers.
Objective
In this lesson, you should be able to validate customer-related concerns through a survey.
DepEd Competency

Guide Questions
Answer the following questions.
1. Have you experienced answering a survey from any establishment? Describe how the
survey was presented.
2. Can you give examples of organizations or establishments that use surveys? List down
at least three.

Unit 7.3: Survey Research
Survey Research
Survey research is a quantitative method of collecting data from a set of respondents. The
survey is the most preferred instrument for quantitative research. The respondents are
asked a variety of questions about their personal information, motivation, and behavior.
The data collected from surveys are analyzed to draw research conclusions.

Tip
Slovin’s formula is a general equation used to determine the sample
size if the researcher has an estimated number of the population.
The formula is written as n=N/(1+Ne2), where n is the number of
samples, N is the population, and e is the margin of error.
Situationer:
A researcher will be conducting survey research on soda preferences of customers. He
wants to find out the sample size of the population with 1,000 people. Below are the steps
in calculating the sample size.
Step Description
1. Decide the level of The researcher decides that he will use the standard
confidence. 5% margin of error, with a confidence level of 95%.

2. Sampling Technique
The sampling technique is the process of selecting members of a population to estimate
characteristics of the whole population. There are two kinds of sampling techniques,
probability sampling and non-probability sampling.
Probability sampling is a sampling technique wherein each member of the population will
be given a chance to be included in the sample. Non-probability sampling is a sampling
technique wherein not all members of the population have an equal opportunity to be
included in the sample.

3. Questionnaire Design
There are some rules that need to be followed in question formulation. These are:
1. The questions should be able to cover all the necessary information required
in the research.
2. The questions should be clear.
3. Each question should cover one topic at a time.
4. Each question should be translated into the target respondent’s dialect.
7
Unit 7.3: Survey Research
Remember
The sample size is the total number of respondents derived from
the population. The sampling technique is the process of identifying
and selecting the respondents of the research.
1. Develop the research objectives. The researcher must define the goals of the
research. Determine what to know and learn.
2. Determine the sample. Before conducting the survey research, the researcher
must identify the sample size and determine what sampling technique to be used.
3. Choose the method. From the different survey research methods based on a
medium such as online, phone, and face-to-face, the researcher must choose the
appropriate method to be used for his research.
8
Unit 7.3: Survey Research
6. Analyze the data. Organize the questionnaires for orderly processing. Tabulate the
data gathered, use graphs, and statistics. Write a report indicating the insights
gained from the results.

product. He has an estimated 500 customers. Identify and compute the sample size to be
used by the entrepreneur.

5. How to compute a sample size if the researcher knows the estimated number of the
population?
B. Form a group of five students. Conduct a survey within your class. Provide
four possible choices of answers for the easy tabulation of results. Tabulate
the data gathered. Create a summarized report for the results of your survey.
