1. Why has UNESCO expanded the definition of literacy? (2pts)

They expand its definition because UNESCO has been at the forefront of global
literacy efforts since 1946, advancing the vision of a literate world for all. It views acquiring
and improving literacy skills throughout life as an intrinsic part of the right to education.
The “multiplier effect” of literacy empowers people, enables them to participate fully in
society and contributes to improve livelihoods. Literacy is also a driver for sustainable
development in that it enables greater participation in the labor market; improved child
and family health and nutrition; reduces poverty and expands life opportunities, Beyond its
conventional concept as a set of reading, writing and counting skills, literacy is now
understood as a means of identification, understanding, interpretation, creation, and
communication in an increasingly digital, text-mediated, information-rich and fast-
changing world.

2. Differentiate the 3 categories of literacy according to Miller? (3pts)

The first one is the basic literacy, according to Miller, means the ability to use
correspondences of visual shapes, to spoken sounds, in order to decode written materials,
and to translate them into oral language. Miller noted that “comprehension literacy means

having ability to understand the meaning of verbal materials. Functional or practical

Research found that the 21st centuries skill application has more measurable
benefits in some sections of life, such as critical thinking and problem solving, initiative,
creativity, and entrepreneurship, communication, teamwork, metacognition (change of
mindset), digital literature.

4. Teacher A is a traditional technology teacher while Teacher B is a digital technology


Teachers. Who is better equipped Teacher A or B can handle the 21st-century learners?

Explain (4pts)

A teacher with “traditional technology” will have a good basic understanding of


digital. One who is purely digitally based will be more apt to get stuck when the projector
bulb blows or the power goes out. Both skill sets are needed. All the technology a good
teacher needs is a stick and a dry patch of earth. But we cannot deny the fact that the Digital
technology teachers are more equipped that can handle the 21 st century learners, they can
easily be understood by their students as they can understand the technology.

5. What are 21st-century skills? Explain each skill in 2 or 3 sentences

21st century skills refer to the knowledge, life skills, career skills, habits, and traits
that are critically important to student success in today’s world, particularly as students
move on to college, the workforce, and adult life. The following list provides a brief
illustrative overview of the knowledge, skills, work habits, and character traits commonly
associated with 21st century skills: Critical thinking, problem solving, reasoning, analysis,
interpretation, synthesizing information, Research skills and practices, interrogative
questioning those are just some of the 21st century skills.
