Exam No. 2 Combined FTG

This document presents two situational problems related to the design of combined and trapezoidal footings to support concrete columns. For the first problem, the student is asked to calculate things like ultimate shear forces, bending moments, reinforcement requirements, and punching shear stresses for a rectangular combined footing. For the second problem, the student must determine the required trapezoidal footing area, dimensions, and maximum shear based on given column loads, geometry, and material properties.

Examination No.2

Instructions. Solve the following situational problem. Write your final

answer on the first page of your answer sheet. Solution to each problem should
start on the second page. One credit point for each correct answer. No credit for a
correct answer without a correct solution.

Situational Problem 1:

Two reinforced concrete columns are to rest on a combined footing due to a problem in
encroachment (see Figure 1). The combined footing is 2.30 m x 7.60 m in plan, have an
effective depth of 850 mm. The interior column 600 mm x 600 mm carries an ultimate
axial load of 1800 kN, while the exterior column (one outer face along property line), 400
mm x 600 mm is subjected to an ultimate axial load of 1200 kN. The distance center to
center of column is 6.00 m. The design properties are f’c = 28 MPa, fy = 414 MPa, 25-
mm-diameter bars, 75 mm clear cover. Neglect the soil on top.

1. What is the ultimate shear force in the longitudinal direction of the footing at the
face of the 400mm x 600mm column in kN?
2. What is the critical beam shear in the longitudinal direction in kN?
3. What is the critical beam shear stress developed in the longitudinal direction in
MPa?
4. What is the maximum positive bending moment in the longitudinal direction in
kN m?
5. How many pieces of negative bars are needed along the longitudinal direction
based on the computed bending moment?
6. What is the punching force in the exterior column in kN?
7. What is the punching shear stress developed under the interior column in MPa?
8. How many pieces of transverse bars are needed under the interior column
based on Code requirement for steel ratio?
9. How many pieces of transverse bars are needed under the exterior column
based on Code requirement for steel ratio?
10. How wide (measured along the longitudinal direction) the transverse bars be
placed under the exterior column in meters?

Situational Problem 2:

Due to space constraints a trapezoidal combined footing (see Figure 2) will be used to
support an axial dead load of 934 kN and axial live load of 490 kN on the 460mm x 460mm
column, and an axial dead load of 534 kN and axial live load of 267 kN on the 405mm x
405 mm column. The footing should not project more than 1.0 m from the exterior face of
the 460mm square column and 0.38m from the exterior face of the 405 mm square
column. The distance center to center of the columns is 4.90m. Footing thickness is
760mm with an effective depth of 673 mm. The allowable soil pressure is 191.5 kPa and
soil weighs 20.14 kN/m3, unit weight of concrete is 23.5 kN/m3, f ‘c = 28 MPa, fy = 414
MPa. The underside of the footing is 1.25m below the natural grade line.

1. What is the required area of the trapezoidal footing based on the given design
properties in m2?
2. What is the proof that the shape of the footing plan is a trapezoid?
3. What are the values of dimensions a and b of the trapezoidal footing in meter?
4. What is the maximum shear along the longitudinal direction of the footing in
kN?
